Kim Kyoung-soo, Thursday, as part of an ongoing investigation into a massive online opinion rigging scandal run by a power blogger known as Druking..Kim, who was elected governor in the June local elections allegedly frequently contacted Druking through messenger applications such as Telegram that are untraceable. However, the governor denied any involvement in the scanda.Druking, real name Kim Dong-won, has been arrested for manipulating clicks and commenting on news articles in favor of the then Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) candidate Moon Jae-in during the presidential election.Prosecutors suspect Kim worked closely with Druking's group to increase the number of likes and comments on online news articles.They are accused of creating over 1.84 million repeated comments on 537 news articles using 2,286 Naver accounts.Special prosecutors led by Huh Ik-bum also obtained inf

The Le Meridien Seoul.By Jung Hae-myoungLee Jun-bae, the chairman of Le Meridien Seoul sacked his chauffeur because “he stinks,” according to a Newsis news agency report Thursday.Lee Jun-bae, the chairman of Le Meridien SeoulThe hotel chairman, 68, ordered the chauffeur, 37, to get out of the car and then drove away, according to an interview with the victim.The chauffeur alleged similar incidents happened three or four times during the two months he worked for the chairman. The driver was taking the chairman home to Seocho-dong after he finished his golf round at Lakewood Country Club in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. The chairman also fired a chef at the Lakewood restaurant on July 23. The chef claims she was advised to resign after the chairman scolded her for serving thick noodles for cold bean-soup noodles. The Le Meridien hotel in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, was formerly known as the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Uzbek woman jailed for deadly hit-run

By Park Si-sooAn Uzbek woman was sentenced to three years in prison for killing a senior citizen in a deadly hit and run. An appellate court in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, made the ruling Thursday, upholding a lower court's decision. It commuted the jail term to three years from three and a half years, citing the accused's financial difficulties and “sincere endeavor” to apologize and compensate the victim's family.The deadly accident happened at 9:40 a.m. on Oct. 30, 2017, near a mart in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. A sedan driven by the Uzbek struck a woman, 72, at a crosswalk. The driver ran away but was caught after two hours thanks to information from a cabby who witnessed the accident.The grandmother was taken to hospital but declared dead.

A girls' high school principal has allegedly poked students' breasts. YonhapBy Jung Hae-myoungA high school principal in Gwangju will face court soon for allegedly poking students' breasts.The principal, 58, allegedly touched the breasts of 26 students on 46 occasions, telling them they were not wearing the name tags on their chests properly. He is due to appear in Gwangju District Court. In addition, about 180 of the 860 enrolled students said they were physically or verbally abused by teachers, according to a Gwangju education office survey. The school has 57 teachers, 39 male and 18 female. Fifteen are under investigation. The school has hired short-term teachers and lecturers, with the help of the education office, to prevent class disruptions.

'You're trash': KAMCO manager accused of defaming newcomer

By Park Si-soo A senior manager of Korea Asset Management Corporation (KAMCO) has been accused of defaming a newcomer, police said Wednesday. Busan Nambu Police Station recently concluded an investigation into the case and transferred it to the prosecution. The incident happened in June, when the alleged victim, 29, contacted the KAMCO manager to tell him he had won a permanent position at the company. The victim worked at KAMCO as a contract worker from March 2016 to February 2018, during which the accused manager was his supervisor. “Don't come to the office. (If you come) I will show you people suffering because of you. You're trash,” the manager reportedly told the victim. “I cannot forgive you … I won't hurt you directly. I will make people hurt you instead.” The victim didn't appear on his first scheduled day in the office and later gave up the job. What had happened between the two is unknown. YonhapBy Jung Min-ho A woman who went missing on Jeju Island last week has been found dead.The Jeju Provincial Police Agency said Wednesday they found her body on southwestern Jeju about 10:50 a.m.The woman, surnamed Choi, 38, disappeared near Sehwa Port on northeastern Jeju on July 25.Police said the National Forensic Service will perform an autopsy to find the cause of her death.Choi, who was a resident of Ansan in Gyeonggi Province, came to the island on July 20 with her husband and two children to go camping.

By Lee Kyung-min A key aide to President Moon Jae-in sought advice on economic policy during the presidential election from an influential blogger, the key figure in an opinion-rigging scandal, according to an independent counsel team, Tuesday. Evidence of such a contact shows the aide, now South Gyeongsang Province Governor Kim Kyoung-soo, and the blogger nicknamed Druking were closer than Kim claims, and indicates Kim may have been more deeply involved in the scandal.The team led by special prosecutor Huh Ik-bum confirmed that Kim sought advice on a wide range of economic issues from Druking in the lead up to the election in May last year. The court said the “guided stealing” was aimed at promoting the couple's YouTube channel. The controversial clip was removed from the channel that has nearly 2.4 million subscribers. This was one of several “child abuse” cases of this kind detected by Save the Children, a NGO for children's rights. The NGO filed a complaint against the couple last year, arguing they “abused” their daughter to promote their YouTube channel.

Shin Ok-ju, pastor of the Grace Road Church in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, was taken into police custody last week when she arrived at Incheon International Airport. Gyeonggi provincial police are handling the case. Shin is suspected of having confiscated the passports of about 400 of her followers who “fled” to Fiji from South Korea since 2014, believing in her prophecy that a “great famine” was imminent on the Korean Peninsula. They were ordered to live together in a small community under the supervision of “guardians” handpicked by the pastor. They forced her followers to take part in a violent and bloody ritual named “threshing ground,” in which they had to beat each other or they would become the target of God's punishment, according to the newspaper.
