By Kim Hyun-binThe National Police Agency (NPA) said, Monday, it plans to introduce a tougher qualification system for leading investigative positions in a move to improve criminal investigations.Under the new system that will be put in force in the second half of the year, police officers must have six years of investigative experience in the past decade or three years of experience in both investigation and detective roles before getting promoted to the chief posts.According to the NPA, 464 police officers will be subject to the new requirements.Previously, there has been no requirement for the section chief grade posts, allowing officers with no prior experience in investigation to hold the seat. The move comes amid President Moon Jae-in administration's efforts to expand the role of the police in criminal investigation. They lay in their respective wooden coffins, believing the “death experience” would help exorcise their misfortunes. One woman, who claims to have been inside her coffin overnight, woke up at 6 a.m. Friday. When she opened the lids of the other coffins, one woman was sleeping and the other was dead.“It's possible the victim suffocated while sleeping inside the airtight coffin,” said a police officer familiar with the case. “An autopsy will

Public concerns rise over BMW safety

By Kim Hyun-binConcerns are rising over the safety of BMW sedans following a series of motor fires that have affected 29 cars this year. While owners are concerned about the possibility of their cars bursting into flames, other drivers worry that their cars may be damaged if a nearby BMW catches fire. From July 29 to Aug. 2, a BMW fire incident was reported every day. Most of the vehicles were 520d sedans, and BMW Korea announced late last month that these would be among 106,000 diesel-powered automobiles in 42 models that it was recalling for servicing. The German carmaker said the exhaust gas recirculation (ERG) module, which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions, was the part that ignited fires in the engine compartment. However, four of the 29 were gasoline-powered vehicles, according to Rep. Shin Chang-hyun of the Democratic Party of Korea, including a BMW Mini Cooper that caught fire at an intersection in Gangnam, July 4.This has raised the question whether the EGR is the real problem, because gasoline engines do not have an EGR installed.“We have conducted our own investigation bu

Prosecution searches foreign ministry over judiciary scandal

By Kim Jae-heunProsecutors searched the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday, as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged abuse of power by the National Court Administration (NCA), which allegedly attempt to gain support from Cheong Wa Dae and various ministries during the previous administration in setting up a de facto “Second Supreme Court.” It is alleged the NCA under former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang Sung-tae pressured the top court and other lower courts to give favorable rulings to the government in politically sensitive cases.Yang and other court officials were seeking the then Park Geun-hye administration's approval for the second top court for smaller cases, thus easing the workload for the “main” Supreme Court and creating more top judiciary positions. As part of the move, the prosecution suspects Yang and the NCA had the Supreme Court delay making a ruling in a compensation suit involving Korean victims of forced labor during World War II and two Japanese firms, a diplomatically-sensitive issue, in an attempt to win the foreign minis
