An Uzbek woman was sentenced to three years in prison for killing a senior citizen in a deadly hit and run.

An appellate court in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, made the ruling Thursday, upholding a lower court's decision. It commuted the jail term to three years from three and a half years, citing the accused's financial difficulties and “sincere endeavor” to apologize and compensate the victim's family.

The deadly accident happened at 9:40 a.m. on Oct. 30, 2017, near a mart in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. A sedan driven by the Uzbek struck a woman, 72, at a crosswalk. The driver ran away but was caught after two hours thanks to information from a cabby who witnessed the accident.

The grandmother was taken to hospital but declared dead.
