Facebook scam: Woman swindled out of $50,000 in fake online romance

Beware of romance scams that seek more than love. YonhapBy Jung Hae-myoung, Park Si-soo A middle-aged Korean woman was swindled out of $50,000 in an online romance scam involving an alleged “Korean Army general in Iraq.” Last Wednesday, the victim attempted to wire $35,000 to her “lover,” who she met on Facebook two months ago. But a bank manager stopped her after noticing something fishy with the recipient. Police moved to investigate, but the women thwarted it, saying “it would be difficult to track the perpetrator and his identity.” Officials said it is impossible to start an investigation without the woman's consent. According to Ulsan Nambu Police station, the self-proclaimed army general approached her in June through a Facebook message, introducing himself as a “prominent solider” whose profile can be retrieved easily on the internet. They exchanged messages and the relationship deepened. The man confessed he wanted to have a “serious relationship” with her. Then the scam began. The soldier asked her to wire money tha

Women in uproar against 'anti-women' police investigation

By Lee Kyung-min Many women are vehemently denouncing police for conducting what they deem an “anti-women” investigation, Thursday, after police said they had obtained an arrest warrant for the operator of WOMAD, the online community of a radical feminist group, for disseminating photos and videos of naked men online. The outcry is expected to fuel the growing anger of women whose repeated demands for “equal accountability for equal crimes” concerning male perpetrators have largely remained unanswered. This culminated in weekend rallies over the past few months to protest a “spy-cam epidemic,” and the government's negligence to seek due accountability. An increasing number of women are expected to participate in the rallies in the coming weeks. The collective denouncement came after Busan Metropolitan Police Agency said a district court issued an arrest warrant, Sunday, for the operator, whose identity is being withheld, on charges of defamation and abetting dissemination of sexually explicit materials online. The suspect, who opened the websi

Crackdown on spycam elusive

The government says it will stop sex crimes involving secret cameras, but there has been little progress. YonhapBy Jung Hae-myoungDespite the growing controversy about “hidden cameras” used to film women intimately, the cameras are not illegal and are readily available at markets. Two months ago, the government declared war on secret camera sex crimes. According to E-Daily online paper, the cameras are embedded in products such as pens, glasses, USBs, and battery chargers, which are certified by government. The relevant law only checks the technical aspect of the cameras, not their potential criminal applications such as recording private or intimate situations. Therefore, it is hard to catch people using hidden cameras for criminal purposes. Rep. Jin Sunmee of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea proposed in January that the relevant law should be revised requiring owners of potential hidden cameras to register them on an official database. However, any possible change is still pending.
