If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. High jumper Woo Sang-hyeok claims 7th straight int'l title, qualifies for worlds

South Korean high jumper Woo Sang-hyeok has extended his international winning streak to seven while also qualifying for this year's world championships. Woo won the men's high jump title with 2.34 meters at the latest Diamond League stop at Stade Louis II in Monaco, Friday (local time). In March, Oleh Doroshchuk of Ukraine had cleared 2.34m at an indoor event. Woo, the reigning world indoor champion, also cleared the outdoor world championship qualification standard of 2.33m. This year's event will be in Tokyo in September. In Monaco, Jan Stefela of the Czech Republic finished second to Woo at 2.32, and JuVaughn Harrison of the United States ranked third at 2.27. Hamish Kerr, the reigning Olympic champion from New Zealand, ended up in seventh at 2.23m. Woo needed just one attempt each to clear the bar at 2.15m, 2.19m and 2.23m. He then jumped over 2.27m in two attempts, before soaring over 2.30m in his first try. Of the eight finali

KT Wiz sign new pitcher Murphy, release postseason hero Cuevas

The KT Wiz announced their signing of former major league pitcher Patrick Murphy on Friday. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club said Murphy agreed to a $277,000 deal for the rest of this season. The league began its annual All-Star break Friday, and the season will resume next Thursday. In a corresponding move, the Wiz released William Cuevas, their longtime staff ace, after parts of seven seasons with the right-hander. Murphy, 30, was a third-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2013 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft and made his big league debut with the club in 2020. The righty later played for the Washington Nationals, and his last MLB game came in 2022. Murphy pitched for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball in 2024, going 1-2 with a 3.26 ERA over 38 2/3 innings in relief. He returned to the United States this year for a minor league stint with the Texas Rangers. "Murphy has a good four-seam fastball and can mix in two-seam fastballs, cutters and curveballs effectively," Wiz general manager Na Do-hyun said. "We hope he will be an ancho

Rays' Kim Ha-seong blasts season's 1st homer

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Kim Ha-seong has hit his first home run of the season, signaling a full recovery from shoulder surgery he underwent in October. Kim launched a two-run shot to help his team secure a 2-1 comeback victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston on Thursday (local time). The homer, which cleared the venue's iconic "Green Monster," marked Kim's first of the season and underscored his re-emergence as a key offensive contributor for the Rays. In Thursday's game, the South Korean infielder had grounded out to shortstop in his first at-bat in the second inning before connecting on his season-opening home run. With the blast, he extended his hitting streak to four consecutive games, raising his season batting average to .385.

Beloved club on top as KBO sets record attendance in 1st half of season

The first half of the 2025 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season wrapped up Thursday night with an unfamiliar name atop the standings, chased by some of the league's most popular clubs. Their seasonlong battles helped the KBO set its first-half attendance record with over 7.5 million fans and put the league on pace to shatter the single-season mark of 10.88 million set just last year. For the first time in 33 years, the Hanwha Eagles have entered the All-Star break in first place, with a record of 52-33-2 (wins-losses-ties). After winning six straight games, they are poised to return to the postseason for the first time since 2018 and only the second time since 2007. They are also the first team to reach 50 wins this season. Teams that beat everyone to 50 wins have gone on to claim the regular-season crown about 71 percent of the time in league history and to also capture the Korean Series title 60 percent of the time. The Eagles finished either second-to-last or last in five of the past six seasons, and they were in last place on April 9 this year, after winning just five out of thei

Former Korean, Japanese baseball stars to play exhibition game in November

Retired baseball stars from Korea and Japan will meet in an exhibition game in November for the second consecutive year, officials said Thursday. Japan-based firm Fighters Sports & Entertainment (FSE) said the "2025 Dream Players Game" will take place at 2 p.m. on Nov. 30 at Es Con Field Hokkaido in Kitahiroshima, home of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). FSE owns and operates the stadium. FSE noted that the game has been recognized by the Japanese foreign ministry as part of celebrations of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the neighbors. Kim In-sik, former manager of the Korean national team, will be back as skipper this year. His team will feature former Korea Baseball Organization All-Stars, including Lee Dae-ho, Kim Tae-kyun and current Kia Tigers manager Lee Bum-ho. All three also spent time in NPB during their careers. Tatsunori Hara, who won six Japan Series titles — three as a player and three as a manager — for the Yomiuri Giants, will manage the Japanese side in November. FSE said Hara's team will include Shunsuke Watanab

Twins manager praises work of rookie starter in up-and-down 1st half

LG Twins starter Song Seung-ki may not win the MVP award in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) this year but in the heart of his manager Youm Kyoung-youb, the rookie left-hander has been as valuable as they come. "He has exceeded our expectations. He's a big reason why we are where we are in the standings," Youm told reporters Thursday before hosting the Kiwoom Heroes in their last game before the All-Star break at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. Song, who will start Thursday, has an 8-5 record with a 3.25 ERA in 16 starts. Song made his KBO debut in 2022 and also pitched briefly in 2023, but is still eligible for the Rookie of the Year award this year because he only accumulated 9 1/3 innings in those two seasons combined. Song, 23, is tied for the team lead in wins with veteran starter Im Chan-kyu and ranks second behind Im in ERA. Youm noted that the two homegrown starters' strong performances have compensated for inconsistency from the team's two foreign pitchers, Yonny Chirinos and Elieser Hernandez. The Twins went into Thursday's game in second place with a 48-37-2 record (wins

Veteran outfielder earns 1st KBO All-Star selection as injury replacement

Kia Tigers outfielder Kim Ho-ryung earned his first All-Star selection of his 11-year career in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) as an injury replacement Thursday. The KBO announced Kim, 33, will take the place of his Tigers teammate Choi Hyoung-woo, who will miss Saturday's All-Star Game after suffering a right hamstring injury Tuesday. Choi was the top vote getter for the designated hitter (DH) spot for the "Nanum" team, made up of players from the Tigers, the Hanwha Eagles, the LG Twins, the NC Dinos and the Kiwoom Heroes. With Choi out, the runner-up in the voting by fans and fellow players, Moon Hyun-bin of the Eagles, will be the starting DH for the Nanum side. Moon had already been selected as a reserve, and with Moon moving into the starting lineup, Kim was named to the Nanum team. Kim, a longtime backup outfielder, has been thrust into the starting role this season with injuries piling up for the Tigers. He has responded with a solid .285/.366/.438 batting line in 48 games and has played strong defense in center field. This year's All-Star Game will be played at Daejeon Hanw
