Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Sports writer Fabrizio Romano also reported that negotiations have made significa

Defending KBO champions Tigers welcome back injured stars, await more returns

The defending Korean baseball champion Kia Tigers have welcomed back a trio of stars from injured lists at the start of the season's second half while awaiting more returns as they chase their second straight title. Before their first game following the All-Star break in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) got rained out Thursday, the Tigers activated pitcher Lee Eui-lee, infielder Kim Sun-bin and outfielder Na Sung-bum. Lee last pitched in May last year before undergoing a season-ending elbow operation. He is scheduled to make his season debut Saturday at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in Gwangju, about 270 kilometers south of Seoul. The 23-year-old left-hander, known for his strikeout abilities, should provide a jolt to a starting rotation decimated by other injuries this season. Lee had seven strikeouts in three innings in a minor league outing last week. They're awaiting a return of American right-hander Adam Oller, who has been slow to recover from elbow inflammation that sidelined him on June 28. The Tigers had initially expected Oller back after the break, and now they're targeting

Tom Kim sits 2 off lead at Open Championship

Tom Kim has put himself in early contention at the final major tournament of the men's golf season. Kim shot a two-under 69 to begin the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, on Thursday (local time). The par-71 course played at 7,381 yards in the opening round, and Kim recorded six birdies and four bogeys to sit in a 10-way tie for 10th place. Five players are tied for the lead at four-under, including the 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick. Kim is one of six South Koreans in the field this week. The 23-year-old with three career PGA Tour titles has had a mediocre season so far, with only one top-10 finish in 20 starts and seven missed cuts — two more than all of last year. Kim tied for second at the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. Im Sung-jae was the next-best Korean in the opening round, as he traded two birdies with two bogeys for an even-par 71 to tie for 32nd. Song Young-han, a Japanese tour player, started with a 73, which put him in a tie for 70th. Kim Si-woo, who got in as the first alternate after former champion Erni

Consistent routines help bullpen workhorse enjoy success

At 40, LG Twins reliever Kim Jin-sung is one of the oldest pitchers in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). But the right-hander is also one of the most durable ones, too. He appeared in 50 games in the first half of this season, the second-highest total in the league. The Twins have 56 games left this season and Kim could surpass his career high of 80 appearances set in the 2023 season. "I guess the team has needed me quite a bit so far," Kim said with a smile before the Twins' game against the Lotte Giants was rained out at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. "Our trainers have taken good care of me. I don't feel fatigued at all." As much help as he gets from his trainers, Kim is doing plenty of work himself off the mound. "I enjoy working out on my own. I can concentrate better that way," he said. "I do a lot of running. I run for 20 minutes before and after games, and spend a lot of time doing calisthenics, too." Kim extolled the virtues of calisthenics, saying they are more important to relievers than weight training, given the unpredictable nature of their job and their workload. "I

KT Wiz to hold farewell ceremony for departing pitcher Cuevas

The KT Wiz announced Thursday they will have a farewell ceremony for their former staff ace William Cuevas on the weekend, in recognition of the Venezuelan pitcher's contributions to the club for the past seven years. The Wiz said the sendoff will be held Sunday before their home game against the Hanwha Eagles at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul. "He dedicated himself to our club for a long time," the Wiz said in a statement. "We will show him our proper respect as we send him off." The Wiz will play a highlight video of Cuevas' career with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club on the scoreboard and present him with a gift. Cuevas will then be joined by his former Wiz teammates for photos and have a chance to address Wiz fans one last time. The Wiz released Cuevas last Friday, as the 34-year-old pitcher had trouble getting out of his seasonlong slump, and replaced him with former major league pitcher Patrick Murphy. He leaves with a 3-10 record and a 5.40 ERA in 18 starts this year. Over 149 regular-season games here from 2019 to 2025, Cuevas had a 55-45 record with

S. Korea captures East Asian women's football title with win over Chinese Taipei

South Korea captured their first East Asian women's football title in 20 years Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Chinese Taipei at home. Ji So-yun scored a 70th-minute penalty and Jang Selgi added the insurance marker 15 minutes later in the final match of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) Women's E-1 Football Championship at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, some 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Korea, China and Japan all finished with five points with a win and two draws each. Korea had a 2-2 draw against China and a 1-1 draw against Japan before Wednesday. Earlier in the day, China and Japan, after each had defeated Chinese Taipei, played to a goalless draw. Goals scored in head-to-head matches among the three tied teams was the first tiebreaker, and Korea came out on top with three goals — followed by China's two and Japan's one. This is Korea's first EAFF title since winning the inaugural crown in 2005. South Korea, world No. 21, improved to 15 wins, two draws and four losses against 42nd-ranked Chinese Taipei. All 15 victories have come in succession.

Japan-China draw leaves door open for Korea to win East Asian women's football title

Japan and China played to a goalless draw at the top East Asian women's football tournament Wednesday, leaving the door open for the host Korea to grab the title later in the day. Neither Japan nor China found the back of the net amid downpours in their final match at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Women's Football Championship at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. Japanese captain Hana Takahashi wasted a couple of open looks during second-half stoppage time, as Nadeshiko missed out on clinching their third straight EAFF title. World no. 7 Japan and 17th-ranked China both finished the four-nation tournament with five points. Japan holds the edge in goal difference, +4 to +2. This result will allow Korea to win the tournament by beating Chinese Taipei later Wednesday at Suwon. In that scenario, Korea, Japan and China will all have five points. And because they all had draws against one another — Korea had a 2-2 draw against China and a 1-1 draw against Japan — goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams will be the first tiebreaker. New pitcher for KT Wiz blessed to be playing after injury setbacks

About a month after celebrating his 30th birthday, American pitcher Patrick Murphy finds himself in Korea as the new starting pitcher for the KT Wiz in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). He is no stranger to Asia, having pitched for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball in 2024. He went back to the United States this year to pitch for the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate for the Texas Rangers. And when a chance came up to pitch for a club in pursuit of a KBO postseason spot, Murphy jumped at it. "When they called, I was talking with my wife, and it was a good opportunity," Murphy told Yonhap News Agency after throwing a 25-pitch bullpen session at KT Wiz Park in Suwon, some 30 kilometers south of Seoul, on Tuesday. "I was in Triple-A with Texas, but I was like, '(The Wiz) are in a playoff push, and they want me to help.' So I am happy to join." The Wiz announced their signing of Murphy last Friday, having him take over from slumping starter William Cuevas for the rest of the season. They are holding down the fifth and final postseason spot

Korea loses to Japan to fall short of E. Asian football title at home

Korea came up short of winning their sixth East Asian men's football title at home Tuesday after losing to Japan 1-0 in the finale. Ryo Germain scored the match's lone goal in the eighth minute of the teams' final contest at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul. Japan, world No. 17, won the four-nation tournament with nine points, having earlier beaten Hong Kong 6-1 and China 2-0. South Korea, who defeated China 3-0 and Hong Kong 2-0, finished as the runners-up with six points in front of 18,418 fans. This was the 10th edition of the top EAFF tournament and Japan has now won three titles, two behind South Korea. This was a must-win match for 23rd-ranked South Korea, while Japan, with a two-goal edge over South Korea in goal difference entering Tuesday, only needed a draw for its second consecutive EAFF title. Korea now has 42 wins, 23 draws and 17 losses against Japan, and has dropped three straight matches against Japan for the first time. Japan has outscored South Korea 7-0 in those three

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors forward Andrea Compagno has been named the top player in Korean football for the month of June. According to the K League, Compagno finished tied for first in the technical study group's voting but came out on top in the other two voting categories to finish with 38.39 voting points. Korean football chief named head of E. Asian body for 3rd time

Korean football chief Chung Mong-gyu has been named president of the sport's East Asian governing body for the third time. The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced Tuesday that Chung, its president since 2013, will be president of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) until March next year. Chung was elected unanimously during the sixth EAFF Extraordinary Congress held in Suwon, some 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Suwon is one of three venues for the ongoing EAFF E-1 Football Championship. Chung had been named the EAFF's interim president on March 30 and earned full-fledged presidency Tuesday. Chung previously led the EAFF from February 2013 to March 2014, and again from March 2018 to April 2022. According to the KFA, the football chief of the host country of the EAFF E-1 Football Championship typically serves as the EAFF's president, whose term is four years. China had been scheduled to host the 2022 E-1 Championship but withdrew, citing concerns over COVID-19.
