Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Sports writer Fabrizio Romano also reported that negotiations have made significa

Korean players looking to end LPGA major drought in France

Three former champions from Korea will tee off at the fourth major tournament of the 2025 LPGA season in France this week, joined by 18 others in their bid to end the country's major championship drought. The Amundi Evian Championship will begin Thursday at Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France, with 132 players in the field. The $8 million tournament will offer $1.2 million to the winner. The Korean contingent includes the 2014 Evian champion Kim Hyo-joo, the 2016 champion Chun In-gee and the 2019 winner Ko Jin-young. The last Korean to win an LPGA major is Amy Yang at the 2024 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, six events ago. And since the start of 2021, Yang is one of only two Koreans with an LPGA major title. Kim holds a share of the 18-hole scoring record at the Evian Championship with 61 in the first round in 2014. Chun still owns the 54-hole and 72-hole records for the championship, when she shot 194 and then 263 en route to her second career major title. Of this trio, Kim has had the best season so far in 2025, though she has been slowed by back issues in recent weeks. Th

Nat'l football team rookies vow to get better after nervy debuts

d With Korea leading China 3-0 about an hour into their opening match of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship on Monday, two players were brought in off the bench together for their senior national team debuts. And after about 30 minutes of action, Pohang Steelers forward Lee Ho-jae and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors midfielder Kang Sang-yoon both came away feeling they still have so much work to do. Lee, 24, and Kang, 21, were among six K League 1 players who earned their first caps for South Korea on Monday at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul, where the home team cruised to a three-goal win. Head coach Hong Myung-bo was able to deploy young and largely unproven talent because the EAFF tournament didn't feature the usual cast of Europe-based national team mainstays. Of 26 players on the team, 10 didn't have any international cap prior to this tournament. Afterward, Hong said while he was pleased with the skills of his international rookies, he also thought the match must have been a shock to their system and urged those players to u

Korea beat China to open East Asian football tournament at home

The host country Korea handled China 3-0 to open an East Asian men's football tournament Monday. Lee Dong-gyeong, Joo Min-kyu and Kim Ju-sung scored a goal apiece as Korea kicked off the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship with a comfortable win on this sultry night at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul. Korea, world No. 23, improved to 24 wins, 13 draws and two losses against 94th-ranked China before a sparse crowd of 4,426 fans. This is the 10th edition of the E-1 Championship, which began in 2003. The Taegeuk Warriors have won five titles, most recently in 2019. Korea will next play Hong Kong at 8 p.m. Friday, and then Japan at 7:24 p.m. on July 15, both at Yongin Mireu Stadium. The team with the most points after the round-robin play will be the champions. The EAFF event isn't on the FIFA international match calendar and teams here assembled their squads mostly with players from their domestic leagues or other Asian circuits. For Korea, head coach Hong Myung-bo picked 23 players from the domestic K League 1 and three from the J

Top K League scorer ruled out for regional tournament due to dizziness

Korean forward Jeon Jin-woo was dropped from the national team just ahead of a regional tournament at home Monday due to dizziness. The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced Jeon, who leads the K League 1 this year with 12 goals for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, will be replaced by Jeong Seung-won of FC Seoul at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship. This is the first senior national team selection for the 28-year-old Jeong, who has appeared in 15 matches for the under-23 national team. Korea will open the tournament against China at 8 p.m. Monday at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers of Seoul. According to tournament regulations, teams are allowed to make injury replacements up to six hours before the kickoff of their first match. Jeon is enjoying a breakout campaign for the K League 1-leading Jeonbuk and earned his first senior international call-up last month for Korea's final two World Cup qualifying matches. He had an assist off the bench in his first match against Iraq and then earned his first start against Kuwait in the next contest. W

KBO's 2 hottest teams to clash in final series before break

The schedule makers most likely didn't plan it this way before the season, but fans of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) will be treated to an intriguing series between the league's two hottest teams this week just before the midseason break. The Hanwha Eagles, who have had at least a share of first place since June 15, will host the surging Kia Tigers for the final three-game series of the first half, starting Tuesday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. The Eagles, at 49-33-2 (wins-losses-ties), have a 3 1/2-game lead over the LG Twins (46-37-2) and the Lotte Giants (46-37-3) and will finish the first half in first place for the first time in 33 years. The Tigers are in fourth place at 45-37-3, but trail the Twins and the Giants by only a half game. They could find themselves alone in second place by the end of this week, depending on how the Eagles series goes. The Tigers ranked seventh as recently as June 17. Since June 18, though, they have gone 10-4-2, for the KBO-best winning percentage of .714. The Eagles, meanwhile, have gone 4-1-1 in Jul

Korea coach eager to test new defenders at East Asian football tournament

Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo said Sunday he will use the upcoming regional football tournament on home soil to test new faces on defense. Korea will take on China, Hong Kong and Japan at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship, starting Monday. Since the EAFF tournament isn't on FIFA's official international match calendar, clubs were under no obligation to release their players for this window — leaving the participating countries to rely heavily on their domestic leagues to fill out their squads. For Hong's 26-man squad, 23 players come from the K League 1. In the days leading up to the event, Hong has repeatedly said the EAFF event will be an opportunity to test new players with the FIFA World Cup less than a year away. At his pretournament press conference Sunday, Hong specifically said he was looking forward to experimenting with different combinations on defense. Of the 10 Korean defenders here, five of them have no prior experience with the senior national team. "For our defense, I've selected some young players who have a chance to play at the World

Kenya's Kipyegon, Chebet break world records in Eugene

EUGENE, United States — Kenya's Beatrice Chebet smashed the women's 5,000 metres world record and compatriot Faith Kipyegon broke her own 1,500m record again as the Eugene Diamond League meet lived up to its billing on Saturday. Olympic champion Chebet ran 13 minutes 58.06 seconds to better the time set by Gudaf Tsegay by over two seconds, the Ethiopian's 14:00.21 obliterated when the Kenyan left Tsegay for dust with 200 metres to go as she sprinted for the line. Chebet looked in shock when she saw the time, adding to her world 10,000 metres record set in Eugene last year, but she had been threatening the record, running 14:03.69 in Rome last month. "I'm so happy, after running in Rome, I said I have to prepare for a record, because in Rome I was just running to win a race, but after running 14:03, I said that I'm capable of running a world record," Chebet said. "So, let me go back home, and then come to Eugene. When I was coming here to Eugene, I was coming to prepare to run a world record, and I said I have to try." Tsegay, along with Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich, kept pace with Chebet

Kim Ha-seong returns to MLB after 11 months with hit, stolen base

Kim Ha-seong has made an impactful return to the big leagues with a hit and a stolen base in his highly anticipated debut for the Tampa Bay Rays, following a long injury layoff. Starting at shortstop and batting seventh in an away game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis, Friday (U.S. time), the 29-year-old infielder went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. It was his first Major League appearance in 11 months, following a right shoulder injury sustained last August while playing for the San Diego Padres. The injury required surgery that October. During his rehabilitation, the South Korean player signed a lucrative two-year deal worth up to $31 million with the Rays. After a 21-game stint in Triple-A, Kim was called up to the major league roster. His moment came in the top of the seventh inning when, leading off, Kim hit Brock Stewart's 96.3 mph fastball for a sharp single to left field. The ball left his bat at a blistering 105.3 mph. It was not only his first hit in a Tampa Bay uniform but also the 419th of his MLB career. He immediately stole second base but was tagged o

Veteran goalkeeper embracing leadership role at East Asian tournament

South Korea's top goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo said Friday he was looking forward to leading a youthful squad at the upcoming regional tournament on home soil. Jo, 33, is the second-oldest player on South Korea's 26-man squad for the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Football Championship. The host South Korea will open the tournament against China on Monday and then will play Hong Kong next Friday. South Korea will then take on Japan on July 15. All three matches will be played at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, about 40 kilometers south of Seoul. But Jo is the most experienced player with 42 caps, with the 35-year-old forward Joo Min-kyu having collected only nine caps. Head coach Hong Myung-bo named Jo captain of the squad featuring nine international rookies and no Europe-based veterans. "I'd like to welcome the new players and congratulate them on their selections," Jo said before a training session at Seongnam Stadium in Seongnam, some 20 km south of Seoul. "This will be an important tournament and a great opportunity for those new guys. We're expected to win the tournament but it won

New Pohang midfielder Ki Sung-yueng hoping to go out in style in likely final season

A day after switching clubs for the first time in his K League 1 career, new Pohang Steelers midfielder Ki Sung-yueng said Friday he will try to go out in style in what will likely be his final season. Ki held his introductory press conference as the newest member of Pohang. He was let go by FC Seoul, the only club he'd played for in South Korea for a decade, last week after he'd asked to be moved to a team where he could play more. Ki, 36, had fallen out of head coach Kim Gi-dong's favor after Kim's arrival ahead of the 2024 season. For this year, Ki had only appeared in eight of FC Seoul's first 20 matches before the club announced they had cut ties with him. Ki was with FC Seoul from 2006 to 2009, before embarking on an 11-year career in Europe. He rejoined FC Seoul in 2020 and then left the club after 218 matches for them in all competitions. Ki said he is already feeling right at home in Pohang, located some 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul. "I've only been here for a couple of days, but I've already been welcomed by the people of Pohang," Ki said. "When I went out to eat yesterday,
