Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. 6 Koreans taking last shot at PGA Tour major glory in 2025

Six Korean players will tee off at the final major championship of the 2025 PGA Tour season this week in Northern Ireland, hoping to become the first from the country to win the oldest tournament in men's golf. The 153rd Open Championship will begin Thursday at Royal Portrush Golf Club, which will host the historic tournament for the third time. The Korean contingent this week will feature four regulars on the PGA Tour, Im Sung-jae, An Byeong-hun, Kim Si-woo and Tom Kim. They will be joined by the senior tour member Choi Kyoung-ju, an eight-time PGA Tour winner who qualified for this week by capturing the Senior Open Championship last year, and Song Young-han, who earned an Open spot in June by tying for second at the Mizuno Open on the Japanese tour, part of the Open Qualifying Series. No one in the PGA Tour quartet has won this year, but Im is having the best season so far in that group. He is the top Korean in both the world rankings (25th) and the FedEx Cup standings (27th). Im did most of the heavy lifting early in the season, though. Over his past seven starts, Im has missed four c

S. Korea coach tells players to relish rival match vs. Japan at East Asian football tournament

On the eve of a high-stakes rival match against Japan at the ongoing regional football tournament, South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo said Monday his players should try to enjoy the experience. South Korea, world No. 23, and Japan, ranked 17th, will square off in the final match of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship at 7:24 p.m. Tuesday at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul. Both teams won their first two matches of the tournament to collect six points, and Japan have the edge in goal difference, +7 to +5. Japan only need a draw against South Korea to win their second consecutive EAFF title. It is a must-win match for South Korea, who are chasing their sixth EAFF crown. South Korea have had 42 wins, 23 draws and 16 losses against Japan, but have lost each of the past two meetings by the same score of 3-0. Given the stakes and the history of the sporting rivalry between the two countries, the intensity level will likely be several notches higher than what South Korea experienced against China and Hong Kong. "Obviously, it's a

Last-place Heroes fire manager, bench coach, general manager

Headed toward their third consecutive last-place finish in Korean baseball, the Kiwoom Heroes fired their manager, bench coach and general manager (GM) on Monday. The Heroes said they have dismissed manager Hong Won-ki, who was in the final year of his three-year contract, and bench coach Kim Chang-hyun. Ko Hyung-wook was also let go as GM. The Heroes ended the first half of the 2025 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season in last place among 10 clubs at 27-61-3 (wins-losses-ties), a .307 winning percentage. They also finished last in both 2023 and 2024, but won over 40 percent of their games then. The Heroes said their minor league skipper, Seol Jong-jin, will serve as the interim manager for the rest of this season. The bench coach spot will remain vacant for the time being, the Heroes added. Ko, who had served as GM in two separate stints, will be replaced by Huh Seung-pil, former head of baseball operations. Huh, 44, began his front office career in the marketing department with another KBO team, Hanwha Eagles, in 2011. He later handled international affairs with the Eagles' baseball

KBO season to resume this week with rare 4-game series

When the 10 clubs in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) return for the second half of their season Thursday, they will be in for a rare four-game series. The teams are still enjoying their expanded, six-day All-Star break, which began last Friday and will end Wednesday. The same opponents that faced each other for the two-game series on the opening weekend in March will be back at it for four games from Thursday to Sunday — weather permitting. The Hanwha Eagles, at 52-33-2 (wins-losses-ties), hold a 4 1/2-game lead over the LG Twins (48-38-2) in first place. The Eagles, winners of six straight games, are the first team to reach 50 wins this year, and historically, teams that get to the 50-win mark first have gone on to capture the regular-season title about 71 percent of the time and win the Korean Series championship about 60 percent of the time. The Eagles will visit fifth-place KT Wiz (45-41-3) in Suwon, some 30 kilometers south of Seoul. The Wiz are part of a crowded middle class, with clubs ranked from fourth to eighth only separated by three games. The 2024 champion Kia Tigers

Trio of ex-KBO teammates submit mixed performances in 1st half of MLB season

A trio of former teammates in the Korean league found themselves playing in Major League Baseball (MLB) at the same time during the first half of this season, while submitting a mixed bag of performances during that stretch. San Francisco Giants center fielder Lee Jung-hoo showed the most promise at the start of the season — his second in MLB — after playing only 37 games as a rookie last year due to a shoulder injury. Lee was batting .324/.369/.539 at the end of April with his first career two-homer game thrown in. But a slow May bled into a June swoon, as Lee put up a meager .143/.277/.274 line that month. His batting numbers for the season dropped to .240/.311/.393 by the end of June. He has shown some signs of life so far in July. After going 1-for-3 with a double against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the final game before the break in San Francisco on Sunday (local time), Lee has a .324/.366/.486 line in 10 games this month. He is batting .249/.317/.403 for the season. Despite his earlier struggles, Lee still leads the Giants with 19 doubles and eight triples. Lee, 26, was a star fo

Korea set to take on rival Japan with E. Asian football title at stake

Korea and Japan will clash in their latest grudge match this week with the East Asian men's football title on the line. The final match of the 10th East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship between the old rivals will kick off at 7:24 p.m. Tuesday at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers of Seoul. The two countries have each won their first two matches of the tournament, with Korea having beaten China 3-0 and then Hong Kong 2-0, and Japan having recorded a 6-1 win over Hong Kong and a 2-0 win over China. Japan hold the edge in goal difference at +7 to +5, meaning they can win their second consecutive EAFF title with a draw against Korea. Korea must prevail in order to claim their sixth EAFF title. Japan finished second to Korea in 2017 and 2019 before getting their revenge on home soil in 2022. In his team's first two matches, Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo experimented with a back-three formation — a departure from a back-four setup — while using two completely different sets of starting lineups. A dozen players on Hong's 26-man squad have made their

Korea holds Japan at East Asian women's football tournament at home

Korea held two-time defending champions Japan to a 1-1 draw at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Women's Football Championship on Sunday, keeping alive their hope of winning the title at home. Substitute Jeong Da-bin netted the equalizer in the 86th minute at Hwaseong Stadium in Hwaseong, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul, for 21st-ranked Korea's second straight draw at the four-nation tournament. Yui Narumiya had the lone Japanese goal in the 37th minute. Japan, world No. 7 who opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over 42nd-ranked Chinese Taipei last Wednesday, still lead the tournament with four points. China, world No. 17, also reached four points after beating Chinese Taipei 4-2 earlier Sunday, but Japan hold the edge in goal difference, +4 to +2. These two countries will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, about 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Korea, now at two points, will close out the tournament against Chinese Taipei at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Suwon. China beats Chinese Taipei at East Asian women's football tournament in Korea

China defeated Chinese Taipei 4-2 for their first victory at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Women's Football Championship in Korea on Sunday. Shao Ziqin and Shen Mengyu each scored to give China an early 2-0 lead, before Su Yu-Hsuan and Chen Yu-Chin responded for Chinese Taipei in the second half. Wang Yanwen then netted the go-ahead goal for China in the 82nd minute, and then Shao scored her second goal during stoppage time at Hwaseong Stadium in Hwaseong, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul. China improved to four points after two matches. They had begun this four-nation tournament with a 2-2 draw against the host country Korea on Wednesday. Chinese Taipei have dropped two straight matches, having earlier lost to Japan 4-0. China are leading the tournament for the time being, with Japan in second place and Korea in third. Korea will face Japan later Sunday at Hwaseong Stadium. Korea must beat Japan or at least hold them to a draw to keep their title hopes alive. Dodgers' Kim Hye-seong drives in key run in win over Giants, Lee Jung-hoo

Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers knocked in a key run to help his team beat their rivals and snap their season-worst losing streak. Batting seventh and starting at second base, the Korean rookie batted 1-for-4 with an RBI in the Dodgers' 2-0 win over the 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday (local time). That lone RBI came with two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Giants nursing a 1-0 lead. Down 0-2 against starter Landen Roupp, Kim punched a single to left field to cash in Michael Conforto from second for a 2-0 Dodgers lead. Kim got thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit to a double, but Kim's RBI proved to be the difference in the Dodgers' narrow win. It ended their seven-game slide — their longest losing skid since 2017. The Giants' Korean center fielder Lee Jung-hoo went 0-for-3 with a walk. Kim and Lee, former teammates on the Kiwoom Heroes in the Korea Baseball Organization, will close out the first half of the season with the series finale Sunday. In Friday's opener, both pl
