Latest LPGA major winner Ryu Hae-ran cracks top 10 in world rankings

Fresh off winning her first LPGA major title, Ryu Hae-ran has cracked the top 10 in the women's golf rankings for the first time since last summer. Ryu jumped five spots to reach No. 7 in the latest rankings released Tuesday. Ryu won the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, on Sunday (local time), holding off fellow South Korean player Yoon Ina by two strokes at 13-under 275. It was Ryu's first LPGA major victory and her fourth title on the tour overall. Ryu had last been inside the top 10 on Aug. 11, 2025. The 25-year-old has previously ranked as high as fifth. Ryu is one of three South Korean players in the top 10. Kim Hyo-joo stayed at No. 3 and Kim Sei-young remained at No. 10. Yoon soared 22 spots to reach her career-high No. 17. The LPGA sophomore began the year at No. 67.

Rays' Kim Ha-seong singles in return to action

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Kim Ha-seong recorded a hit in his return to action after missing three games with a right calf cramp. Kim went 1-for-4 but also struck out three times as the Rays lost to the Detroit Tigers 4-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit on Tuesday (local time). Kim had missed three previous games after his right leg acted up in a botched steal attempt during his season debut last Friday. Kim, who signed with the Rays in February, had been out up to that point while recovering from shoulder surgery from October last year. Batting fifth in the lineup, Kim singled off Tigers starter Jack Flaherty to lead off the second inning, but then struck out in his next three trips to the plate. Elsewhere in Major League Baseball, Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in a 3-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field in Milwaukee. Kim is now just 2-for-20 in seven games in July, and his batting has nosedived from .383 to .327 during this stretch. Also Tuesday at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Giants center fielder Lee Jung-hoo batted 2-for-4 in h

Korea coach chases East Asian football title on home soil

Shin Sang-woo, head coach of the Korean women's national football team, said Tuesday he will try to lead his players to the top of the regional tournament on their home soil — FIFA ranking positions notwithstanding. Korea will host the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Women's Football Championship starting Wednesday, with the men's competition having started Monday. Shin's team will open the competition against China at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, some 30 kilometers south of Seoul, at 8 p.m. Wednesday. They will then play Japan at 8 p.m. Sunday at Hwaseong Stadium in Hwaseong, just south of Suwon. The finale will be against Chinese Taipei at 7:30 p.m. on July 16 in Suwon. Japan are the top-ranked team in this tournament — and also in Asia — at No. 7. Among the participants here, China are next at No. 17, followed by Korea at No. 21 and Chinese Taipei at No. 42. At the pretournament presser, Shin said he wants to deliver the EAFF title to supporters at home. "In order to accomplish our goal, we must win our first match against China," Shin said. "So we're only thinking

Freestyle swimmer chases 4th straight medal at world championships

Hwang Sun-woo is the most decorated Korean swimmer in world championships history, with one gold, two silver and one bronze medal won over the past three competitions. In addition to owning the most medals, Hwang is also the only swimmer from his country to reach the podium at three consecutive world championships. Still only 22, Hwang said Tuesday he wants to extend his streak and add to his tally later this month when Singapore hosts the world championships. "This is my fifth worlds, and since I've been on the podium the last three events, I will go for my fourth in a row," Hwang said at a joint national team press conference at the Jincheon National Training Center in Jincheon, 85 kilometers south of Seoul. Hwang is the defending world champion in the men's 200-meter freestyle, an event where he'd won bronze in 2023 and silver in 2022. He also holds the national record with 1:44.40, set while winning gold at the 2023 Asian Games. "I haven't improved my 200m time since the Asian Games," Hwang said. "This time, I want to break my own national record and stand on the podium as well." Kim

Brash teen swimmer takes aim at relay world record

At the tender age of 19, Korean swimmer Kim Young-beom is nothing if not confident. One may chalk it up to youthful chutzpah, as Kim declared Tuesday his goal for the upcoming world championships is to break the world record in the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay. Kim will be teaming up with veterans Hwang Sun-woo, Kim Woo-min and Lee Ho-joon in the relay. The three raced to silver medal at last year's world championships in Doha with Yang Jae-hoon as the fourth member with a time of 7:01.94, only 0.10 second back of China. The quartet owns the national record time of 7:01.73, set during the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. The world record time is 6:58.55, set by the United States during the 2009 worlds at the height of high-tech, full-body swimsuits that led to many other world records. Most of the marks set at the 2009 world championships have not been touched. But Kim, who has emerged as the new star in Korean swimming this year, voiced confidence the relay record could tumble at this year's worlds in Singapore, starting July 27. For Korea to get into the record books, Kim would

Diver sees latest injury as 'just another challenge' to overcome before world championships

Admittedly only halfway back from her recent knee surgery, Korean diver Kim Su-ji contemplated skipping the upcoming world championships in Singapore. But the 27-year-old has never shied away from challenges and adversity, and she wasn't about to do it this summer. "I really love taking on challenges," Kim said Tuesday at a press conference at the Jincheon National Training Center in Jincheon, some 85 kilometers south of Seoul. The diving competition at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships begins July 26. "I regard my latest injury as just another challenge. So mentally, it has not been that difficult." Kim is the most successful Korean diver in world championships history with three bronze medals. She won the first of those three in the women's 1-meter springboard event at the 2019 event in Gwangju, 270 kilometers south of Seoul. Last year in Doha, she added a bronze in the 3m springboard and then teamed up with Yi Jae-gyeong for another bronze in the mixed 3m synchronized event. Kim admitted thoughts of retirement crossed her mind about a month after her surgery but she decided agains

Rays' Kim Ha-seong misses 3rd straight game with calf injury, feels 'closer to normal'

The Tampa Bay Rays' new Korean shortstop Kim Ha-seong has missed a third straight game with right calf cramp, though he claimed to be feeling "closer to normal." Kim made his season debut and also Rays debut last Friday (local time) against the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis but was forced to leave the game when his right calf cramped up after he got thrown out trying to steal third base in the seventh inning. Kim, who signed a two-year contract with the Rays in February, had just returned after recovering from shoulder surgery he'd undergone in October while with the San Diego Padres. Kim has not played since, though he has been practicing during the Rays' road trip. Before the Rays lost to the Detroit Tigers 5-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit on Monday, Kim told Tampa Bay media that his leg "definitely feels closer to normal." "Hitting in the cage and warming up felt pretty good. I think I'll have to go outside, go through all the team exercises, training and then see how it goes," Kim said. "I'm fine. There's no need for me to go on the injured list." Kim won the National League Gold Glove

Giants ace Gamboa voted KBO's top player for June

Lotte Giants ace Alec Gamboa on Tuesday was named the top player in Korean baseball for June. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said the American left-hander beat out five other candidates for the Player of the Month award for June. Gamboa joined the Giants in May in place of injured Charlie Barnes, and he went 5-0 with a 1.72 ERA in June — leading the KBO in both wins and ERA for the month. He ranked second with 31 1/3 innings pitched in that month. Gamboa received 30 out of 35 votes cast by members of the Korea Baseball Writers Association and received 105,152 out of 429,664 votes submitted by fans, for the converted voting points of 55.09 points. Kia Tigers reliever Jeon Sang-hyun finished a distant second with 26.05 points, after earning one vote from the media and 211,595 votes from fans. Jeon led all relievers in June with 15 appearances and nine holds. The KBO will award Gamboa with a trophy and 3 million won ($2,195) in prize money. Gamboa is the first Giants player to win the top monthly award since pitcher Na Gyun-an for April 2023.

All-Star pitcher replaced due to injury

Doosan Bears pitcher Choi Seung-yong will miss the upcoming All-Star Game due to an injury. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said Tuesday Choi will be replaced by his Bears teammate, Park Chi-guk, in the pitching staff for the "Dream" All-Star team, made up of players from the Bears, the Samsung Lions, the KT Wiz, the SSG Landers and the Lotte Giants. The All-Star Game is Saturday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark, the brand new stadium for the Hanwha Eagles located in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. Choi had been selected as a reserve after going 5-5 with a 4.94 ERA in 16 starts in the first half. But during his most recent outing Sunday against the Wiz, Choi had his left index fingernail chipped. Though Choi won't be available for the All-Star Game, the left-hander is expected to be ready when the season resumes July 17. Park, a right-handed reliever, has a 2-1 record with one save, nine holds and a 3.18 ERA in a team-high 46 appearances.

Korean players looking to end LPGA major drought in France

Three former champions from Korea will tee off at the fourth major tournament of the 2025 LPGA season in France this week, joined by 18 others in their bid to end the country's major championship drought. The Amundi Evian Championship will begin Thursday at Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France, with 132 players in the field. The $8 million tournament will offer $1.2 million to the winner. The Korean contingent includes the 2014 Evian champion Kim Hyo-joo, the 2016 champion Chun In-gee and the 2019 winner Ko Jin-young. The last Korean to win an LPGA major is Amy Yang at the 2024 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, six events ago. And since the start of 2021, Yang is one of only two Koreans with an LPGA major title. Kim holds a share of the 18-hole scoring record at the Evian Championship with 61 in the first round in 2014. Chun still owns the 54-hole and 72-hole records for the championship, when she shot 194 and then 263 en route to her second career major title. Of this trio, Kim has had the best season so far in 2025, though she has been slowed by back issues in recent weeks. Th

Nat'l football team rookies vow to get better after nervy debuts

d With Korea leading China 3-0 about an hour into their opening match of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship on Monday, two players were brought in off the bench together for their senior national team debuts. And after about 30 minutes of action, Pohang Steelers forward Lee Ho-jae and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors midfielder Kang Sang-yoon both came away feeling they still have so much work to do. Lee, 24, and Kang, 21, were among six K League 1 players who earned their first caps for South Korea on Monday at Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, some 40 kilometers south of Seoul, where the home team cruised to a three-goal win. Head coach Hong Myung-bo was able to deploy young and largely unproven talent because the EAFF tournament didn't feature the usual cast of Europe-based national team mainstays. Of 26 players on the team, 10 didn't have any international cap prior to this tournament. Afterward, Hong said while he was pleased with the skills of his international rookies, he also thought the match must have been a shock to their system and urged those players to u
