Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Sports writer Fabrizio Romano also reported that negotiations have made significa

Bears manager credits captain's leadership for summer surge

Having spent most of the year so far near the bottom of the standings, the Doosan Bears appear to be a long shot to make the postseason in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). However, as interim manager Cho Sung-hwan tells it, team captain and veteran catcher Yang Eui-ji hasn't given up hopes, and he wants his teammates to keep their faith, too. And in Cho's mind, Yang's leadership has fueled the Bears' summer surge, which has seen them post the KBO's second-best record in July at 7-4-0 (wins-losses-ties). "As our captain, Yang Eui-ji has been telling the team that he thinks we can still do this," Cho told reporters in his pregame media scrum Tuesday, before facing the Hanwha Eagles at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. "I believe the power of his words has impacted our play and it is showing on the field." Even with their current three-game winning streak, the Bears are still in ninth place in the 10-team league at 38-49-3. They are six games out of the fifth and final postseason spot with 54 games remaining — a gap likely insurmountable this late in the season. "Even I don't really

Rays' Kim Ha-seong leaves game with back injury

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Kim Ha-seong was forced to leave his latest game with lower back tightness, yet another setback in a season already compromised by multiple injuries. Kim walked and stole second base in the bottom of the second inning against the Chicago White Sox at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, on Monday (local time). After fielding the final out in the top of the third at shortstop, Kim did not return to the field for the fourth inning, as Taylor Walls shifted from second base to shortstop. After the Rays lost 8-3, Kim said his back "tightened up really strongly" on his steal, according to MLB.com. "I tried to play through it, but I didn't think it was going to work," Kim said through his interpreter, David Lee. Both Kim and Rays manager Kevin Cash said they would have to wait another day to learn the full extent of the player's injury. Kim signed with the Rays in February after four seasons with the San Diego Padres but didn't make his season debut until July 4 as he recovered from right shoulder surgery done in October. Kim had to leave that first game due to

Shohei Ohtani gives up his first homer of the season, then hits a 2-run shot of his own

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani gave up his first home run of the season when Minnesota's Byron Buxton took him deep. He promptly answered with a two-run shot of his own. The Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way superstar left a breaking ball over the plate on his second pitch of the game and Buxton drove it 410 feet to the left field pavilion on Monday night. It was just the second time in six appearances as an opener this season that Ohtani has allowed a run. “A lot of mistakes over the plate, especially with two strikes," Ohtani said through an interpreter. "The execution of it, and I should have been expanded, but it was thrown at places where hitters could hit it.” Batting second in the lineup, Ohtani topped Buxton in the bottom of the inning. He blasted a two-run shot — his 35th of the season — 441 feet into center field off David Festa, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead after Mookie Betts led off with a walk. He struck out in his final three at-bats. Betts has replaced Ohtani in the leadoff spot in an attempt to end the worst slump of the former MVP's career. Ohtani said he had no hesita

Ex-MVP Kim Young-gwon among Team K League reserves for match vs. Newcastle

Ulsan HD FC defender Kim Young-gwon has been picked as a reserve for a team of the Korean league All-Stars in a summer exhibition match against Newcastle United. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) on Tuesday announced a list of 10 reserves for Team K League for their match against Newcastle, which will kick off at 8 p.m. on July 30 at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, about 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Fan voting determined the starting XI, which was finalized last Tuesday. Ulsan HD head coach Kim Pan-gon, who will be in charge of Team K League as bench boss of the defending K League 1 champions, and his assistant, Gwangju FC head coach Lee Jung-hyo, chose 10 bench players. Kim won the 2023 K League 1 MVP award after helping Ulsan to their second consecutive championship. He is one of three defenders among the reserves, joined by Byeon Jun-soo of Gwangju FC and Anton Krivotsyuk of Daejeon Hana Citizen FC. The two reserve forwards are Bruno Mota of FC Anyang and Cesinha of Daegu FC. The coaching staff selected four midfielders as backups: Kim Dong-hyun of Gangwon FC, Lee Ch

High-flying Eagles on verge of franchise history

As they try to run away with the regular-season title, the Hanwha Eagles are a victory away from making franchise history. The Eagles are coming off a 10-0 rout of the KT Wiz on Sunday for their ninth straight victory, which pushed their record to the league-best 55-33-2 (wins-losses-ties). They also won 12 games in a row from April 26 to May 11 this year. With one more win, the Eagles will have two winning streaks of at least 10 games in the same season for the first time in club history. In the 43-year history of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), only the 1985 Samsung Lions, with an 11-game streak followed by a 13-game run, have accomplished that feat. The Eagles will open the new week with a three-game series against the Doosan Bears starting Tuesday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. The Bears are still stuck in ninth place at 38-49-3, but they have won three straight games. With a sweep of the Bears, the Eagles will extend their streak to 12 games, two shy of matching the franchise record set in 1992, when they were called the Binggrae Eagles under different ownership. They wil

Giants' Lee collects 2 hits in return to leadoff spot; Rays' Kim steals 2 bags

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has marked his return to the leadoff spot with a multihit effort, though it wasn't enough to stop his club's losing streak. Lee went 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored the game's first run in the Giants' 8-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Sunday (local time). Lee batted leadoff for the first time since June 17. He'd hit fifth, sixth and seventh over the past several weeks before returning to the top of the order in this one, and he opened the game with a lucky double. Lee lifted a routine flyball to shallow left, but left fielder Davis Schneider lost track of the ball and let it drop in front of him. Lee scampered to second base for his team-leading 20th double of the season. Lee then came around to score on a follow-up single by Heliot Ramos. After striking out in the third and grounding out in the fifth, Lee picked up an RBI hit in the sixth. Facing left-handed reliever Justin Bruihl, Lee poked a single to center field and tried to advance to second when center fielder Myles Straw threw to third baseman Ernie Clement. Clem

Im Sung-jae stumbles on last day at Open Championship

Im Sung-jae tumbled down the leaderboard after posting his worst score of the week at the final major tournament of the men's golf season. Im shot a four-over 75 to close out the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, on Sunday (local time) and ended in a tie for 52nd place overall at four-over 284. Im went four-under 67 on Saturday for his best round of the tournament to put himself in a tie for 22nd but went through a roller coaster of the final round while making only five pars. The only one among six South Koreans to make the cut at Royal Portrush, Im recorded four birdies, one eagle, six bogeys and two double bogeys. One of the double bogeys came on the first hole when he put his second shot into a greenside bunker. He holed a 42-yard chip for an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole to get back to even-par for the day and traded a birdie on the seventh with a bogey on the ninth. Im then went bogey-double bogey-bogey to start the back nine and closed with a three-putt bogey on the 18th. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler cruised to his first Open title at 17-un

Im Sung-jae shoots under-par round to move up leaderboard at Open Championship

As the only Korean to make the cut, Im Sung-jae has moved up the leaderboard at the Open Championship with his first under-par round of the week. Im shot a four-under 67 in the third round of the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, on Saturday (local time). He is four-under for the tournament through 54 holes and is in a seven-way tie for 22nd place. Im had opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of even-par 71. In the third round, Im made five birdies and two bogeys on the front nine before adding a birdie on the back nine. Im's 67 tied for the third-best score in the field in the third round, which saw 36 players break 70 — compared with only 17 players in the first round. Im is now eyeing his second consecutive top-10 finish at the Open Championship after tying for seventh place at last year's event at Royal Troon. The five other Koreans in the field at Royal Portrush all missed the cut. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is leading the way at 14-under after shooting a 67. 5 out of 6 Koreans miss cut at Open Championship

Only one out of six Korean players in the field has made the cut at the final major tournament of the men's golf season. Im Sung-jae shot an even 71 in the second round of the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, Friday (local time), with a birdie and a bogey. It was Im's second straight round of 71 on this par-71 course. He is in a 17-way tie for 34th place. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler soared to the top of the leaderboard at 10-under after firing a 64, Friday. The cut line was one-over 143, and the five other South Korean players finished above it. Tom Kim went from tying for 10th after the opening round to missing the cut at three-over after carding a 76 in the second round with a birdie, four bogeys and one double bogey. Kim Si-woo, who went 74-71, also finished at three-over, while Song Young-han, a Japanese tour player, ended up at four-over after shooting back-to-back 73s. Manchester United agree terms with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United have finally reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo, the PA news agency understands. Six weeks after seeing their first offer rebuffed, Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils have agreed terms with the Bees to sign the 25-year-old forward. United are set to pay £65 million ($87 million) for Mbeumo, with Brentford reportedly in line for a further £6 million in potential add-ons. The Cameroon international is in line to become the Premier League club’s second major summer signing after Brazil international Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £62.5 million deal last month. Mbeumo is understood to have expressed a desire to move to Old Trafford over other clubs and his impending arrival is a major boost ahead of United’s pre-season tour. Amorim’s men fly to the United States on Tuesday for the three-game Premier League Summer Series, having kicked off preparations for the new campaign with Saturday’s Stockholm friendly against Leeds. Mbeumo heads to the north west fresh from the best season of his career, with the Brentford star scoring 2
