Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Sports writer Fabrizio Romano also reported that negotiations have made significa

Rays' Kim Ha-seong misses 2nd straight game with back tightness

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Kim Ha-seong has missed his second straight game with lower back tightness, though he should be ready to return for the start of the next series. Kim watched his Rays fall to the Chicago White Sox 11-9 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday (local time). Kim exited the game against the White Sox on Monday after his back tightened up following his steal of second base. He apparently felt better the following day but did not play. Before Wednesday's game, Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters Kim was potentially available off the bench but elected not to play him. The Rays have a day off Thursday and will then embark on a seven-game road trip Friday, starting in Cincinnati. Kim is expected to be back in the lineup by then. He has only played 10 games this season. He made his season debut July 4 after recovering from last fall's shoulder surgery and then promptly missed three games with calf problems. Kim is batting .226/.314/.355 with a homer, three RBIs and four steals this season. Elsewhere in the majors, Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Do

Men's nat'l football team hires 2 new coaches in preparation for World Cup

The Korean men's national football team hired two new coaches Thursday, with the next FIFA World Cup less than a year away. The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Pedro Roma will be the new goalkeeper coach, while Nuno Matias will be the new fitness coach under head coach Hong Myung-bo. Both new additions hail from Portugal. Roma, 54, has served as the goalkeeper coach for Portugal's junior national teams, first from 2011 to 2019 and then from 2023 to this year, and for the Bahrain men's national team from 2019 to 2023. While in Korea, Roma will run goalkeeper clinics to help develop young custodians here when the national team is not in training camp, the KFA added. Matias, 41, has been the strength and conditioning coach for the Portuguese club Benfica since 2021, after serving as head of Benfica youth club's sports science team and conditioning coach for their B team. The KFA noted that Matias helped Benfica reach the round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup held in the United States last month, and his experience working with players there should help Korea when the U.S. co-hosts the

New ace for Giants thriving in raucous atmosphere in KBO

Before making his Korean league debut May 27, Lotte Giants left-hander Alec Gamboa had no idea what he would be in for. The 28-year-old American had signed with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club earlier that month to replace Charlie Barnes in the Giants' rotation. Unlike most other foreign players who make their way here, Gamboa had not played in Major League Baseball (MLB) before taking his talent to Korea. A ninth-round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2019 MLB draft, Gamboa first reached Triple-A in 2023, but a call-up from the big league club never came. So Gamboa had not been accustomed to pitching in front of big crowds when he stepped on the rubber against the Samsung Lions that day, with a sellout crowd of 24,000 at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, about 235 kilometers southeast of Seoul. "I'd never pitched in anything like that. I'd never made my big league debut, so I was always in the minor leagues, and the minor leagues don't get too many fans," Gamboa told Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday before the Giants played the Kiwoom Heroes at Gocheok Sky Dome in

FC Barcelona's S. Korea trip unaffected by Japan cancellation: promoter

The upcoming Korean trip by the Spanish football giants FC Barcelona will not be affected by the club's cancellation of their preseason match in Japan, the event's promoter here said Thursday. D-Drive said Barca's Korean visit set for next week will "proceed as scheduled," in light of the club's announcement that they were "obliged to suspend" their match against the Japanese side Vissel Kobe scheduled for Sunday "due to serious contractual breaches on behalf of the promoter." Barca will face FC Seoul at 8 p.m. next Thursday at Seoul World Cup Stadium, with the next one against Daegu FC at 8 p.m. on Aug. 4 at Daegu Stadium in the southeastern city of Daegu. "From the players' arrival and the matches to the fan event and other official functions, we're working with the club to ensure thorough preparations," D-Drive said in a statement. "Through our close coordination, we have nearly completed our preparations for the Korean tour. We're also maintaining a stable coordination system with relevant parties and operating partners." D-Drive accused its co-promoter for the Japan match, Yasuda Gr

Starter carries Giants past Heroes in KBO

The Lotte Giants ended their two-game losing streak by defeating the Kiwoom Heroes 4-1 on Wednesday, with their starter Park Se-woong back on top of his game. In his best start in over two months, Park held the Heroes to a run on six hits in seven innings and struck out six batters before 15,325 fans at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. For the first time in four months, Park did not issue a walk. The Giants put up a three-spot in the fifth before adding another in the seventh, as they improved to 49-42-3 (wins-losses-ties) and stayed in third place in the 10-team Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). The Heroes remained in last place at 28-63-3. The game started out as an unlikely pitching duel between two starters who hadn't been close to being anyone's definition of an ace lately. Park carried an 11.91 ERA over his five previous starts, after allowing 30 earned runs on 43 hits, including eight home runs, in just 22 2/3 innings. His Heroes counterpart, Ha Yeong-min, had been a little better, with a 4.25 ERA since the start of June, but his last win had come on June 18. The two right-handers traded

Heroes' interim manager pleased with outfielder's development

A dozen years after getting drafted into the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Kiwoom Heroes outfielder Im Ji-yeol is finally seeing regular playing time at age 29. And the team's interim manager, Seol Jong-jin, said Wednesday he won't mess with success. "Ji-yeol was given an opportunity to play regularly in the first half of the season and he made the most of it," Seol told reporters before the Heroes hosted the Lotte Giants at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. "Now that I've managed him in a couple of games, I can see that he has some good things going at the plate. I will keep putting him in the lineup." Im has appeared in 51 out of the Heroes' 93 games so far, and is on pace to shatter his career high in games played — 72 from the 2023 season — with 51 games left in 2025. He has already set his personal high with six home runs and eight steals, including two in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Giants. Im went 4-for-5 with two RBIs in that victory but Seol noted that the outfielder's aggressive baserunning from the first inning was just as important as those hits. Im had just two steals for hi

Dodgers' Kim Hye-seong ends hitless drought with 2-run single

Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers has snapped a three-game hitless drought with a two-run single while also stealing a base, though his effort wasn't enough to help his club win. Batting seventh and playing second base, Kim went 1-for-4 with two RBIs as the Dodgers fell to the Minnesota Twins 10-7 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday (local time). Kim had gone 0-for-8 in his three previous games and had just eight hits in 41 at-bats in July prior to this game. With the Dodgers down 6-3 and runners at second and third in the bottom sixth, Kim delivered a two-out single to make it a one-run contest. Kim then swiped second base for his 12th steal, but was stranded when Miguel Rojas struck out looking. Kim had two groundouts and a strikeout in his three other trips to the plate. He is now batting .317 for the season and is carrying a .200 average over 16 games in July. Elsewhere in the majors, Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants went 0-for-4 with a walk in a 9-0 win over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Atlanta. His batting average dropped to .246. Light-hitting shortstop hopes rare homer sparks turnaround at plate

When the Hanwha Eagles signed shortstop Sim Woo-jun in free agency last winter, they didn't give him a four-year deal worth 5 billion won ($3.6 million) for his offense. As long as the sure-handed Sim could stabilize their defense up the middle, the Eagles were willing to live with whatever he could provide with his bat. Sim has done exactly that with his glove so far this Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season. However, even by his relatively low offensive standards, Sim has been struggling at the plate. A career .254 hitter prior to 2025, Sim entered Tuesday's game against the Doosan Bears batting only .210 in 51 games. Sim recorded just one hit in the Eagles' 2-1 win at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul, but it turned out to be a big one — a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning before the Bears got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. It was only Sim's second home run of this year, and first since April 29, and it proved to be the difference maker as the league-leading Eagles stretched their winning streak to 10 games. "I was frustrated I missed out on chances with

Eagles edge out Bears for 10th straight win in KBO

The Hanwha Eagles extended their winning streak to 10 games Tuesday by squeezing past the Doosan Bears 2-1 on the road. In a battle of the two best teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in July, Eagles starter Moon Dong-ju struck out a season-high nine batters in six shutout innings in front of a sellout crowd of 23,750 at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. Solo home runs by Roh Si-hwan and Sim Woo-jun provided all the offense for the Eagles, who improved their league-best record to 56-33-2 (wins-losses-ties). The Eagles became only the second team in the KBO's 43-year history to post two double-digit winning streaks in the same season, joining the 1985 Samsung Lions. The Eagles previously won 12 in a row from April 26 to May 11. The Bears, who scored their lone run in the bottom ninth, fell to 38-50-3 as their three-game winning streak ended. Roh put the Eagles on the board in the top second with his solo home run off Bears starter Zach Logue. Roh drilled a 3-2 fastball and sent it 125 meters into the seats in right-center field for his team-leading 19th home run this season. The

Injured KBO MVP Kim Do-yeong cleared for practice

Sidelined since late May with his second hamstring injury of the season, the reigning baseball MVP Kim Do-yeong has been cleared for practice, his club announced Tuesday. The Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said their star third baseman will return to full practice Wednesday. Kim had already started playing catch and hitting off the tee last Tuesday, the Tigers added. The Tigers said the latest round of tests done on his right hamstring Tuesday came back clean, though they did not set a timetable for Kim's return to game action. Kim strained his right hamstring after a steal during a game on May 27. He had injured his left hamstring during the season-opening game on March 22 and returned on April 25. In 27 games, Kim has a .330/.378/.630 line with seven home runs, 26 runs-batted-ins (RBIs) and three steals. Kim's injury is one of many that have threatened to derail the Tigers' Korean Series title defense. They have overcome a slow start to jump to fourth place in the standings at 46-40-3, wins-losses-ties, prior to their game against the LG Twins on Tuesday. Kim authore
