Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Sports writer Fabrizio Romano also reported that negotiations have made significa

Kim Woo-min wins bronze in men's 400-meter freestyle at worlds

Korean swimmer Kim Woo-min captured bronze in the men's 400-meter freestyle at the world championships in Singapore on Sunday for his second straight podium finish in the event. Kim clocked 3:42.60 in the 400-meter freestyle final at the World Aquatics Championships Arena in Singapore, finishing 0.25 seconds behind the gold medalist, Lukas Martens of Germany at 3:42.35. Kim had won his first career world title at last year's competition in Doha. Samuel Short of Australia, the 2023 world champion, finished with the silver medal this time at 3:42.37. Short, Martens and Kim had ranked 1-2-3 in the heats held earlier Sunday. Swimming in Lane 3, Kim had the fastest reaction time at 0.61 second, while Martens, the world record holder, was tied for the slowest off the blocks at 0.70 second. But the German swimmer hit the 100-meter mark first at 51.95 seconds, with Kim trailing him in third place at 52.77. Short was sandwiched between the two at 52.46. And it stayed Martens-Short-Kim at the halfway point. Short was briefly in the lead at the 300-meter mark, but Martens nipped him by 0.02 seconds at

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo has 3-hit game in loss

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants had a three-hit game go to waste in a narrow loss at home. Lee went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the Giants' 2-1 loss to the New York Mets at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday (local time). It was Lee's seventh three-hit effort of this season and his third in July. Batting seventh, Lee got his first hit with a single in the top of the second inning. He collected an RBI with a bases-loaded groundout in the fourth, and it ended up being the Giants' only run of this game. After hitting a single in the sixth, Lee delivered a double off the right-center field wall with one out in the ninth. Lee represented the tying run, but Mike Yastrzemski struck out swinging against closer Edwin Diaz before Patrick Bailey lined out sharply to first baseman Pete Alonso to end the game. Lee's batting average ticked up to .254, his highest mark since June 26. After struggling to a .143 average in June, Lee is hitting .318 so far in July. In Boston, Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers went 2-for-3 in his team's 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. A day afte

Rays' Kim Ha-seong placed on injured list with back strain

Kim Ha-seong of the Tampa Bay Rays has been placed on the injured list with a lower back strain, returning to the sidelines after only 10 games in his injury-plagued first year with the club. The Rays put Kim on the 10-day list, Friday (local time), in Cincinnati, Ohio, before their series opener against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. The move was retroactive to Tuesday. Kim exited Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox when his back tightened up following a steal. Kim then missed the next two games. Kim had been reportedly feeling better with each passing day and had been expected to return for the Reds series. Instead, he is back on the injured list after spending about four months at the start of this season there while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Kim signed with the Rays in February, following four seasons with the San Diego Padres. The South Korean shortstop made his Rays debut on July 4 but then missed three games with a calf injury. He logged nine more games before his back issues forced him out again. Kim is batting .226/.314/.355 with a homer, three RB

KBO sets new single-season sellout record

The Korean baseball league has set a single-season record for sellouts. With three of the five games held at full houses Friday night, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) reached 224 sellouts for the season. The league had a then-record 221 sellouts in 720 games last year. That mark was shattered after just 470 games this season. The Hanwha Eagles are leading the way with 40 sellouts at their brand new stadium, Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. Their latest sellout came Friday night, when they shut out the SSG Landers 4-0 before 17,000 fans. The KT Wiz beat the Samsung Lions 8-5 with 18,700 fans packing KT Wiz Park in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul. In the southeastern city of Busan, 22,669 fans watched as the home team Lotte Giants beat the Kia Tigers 7-4 at Sajik Baseball Stadium. The KBO surpassed 8 million fans in a record 465 games Thursday night and is closing in on the single-season record of 10.88 million set last year.

Dinos to 'seriously consider' offer from new city in light of relocation threat

Nearly two months after threatening to relocate amid a feud with their home city, the NC Dinos said Friday they will "seriously consider" an offer from another town. Seongnam, located just south of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, has emerged as a likely destination for the Dinos, currently based in the southeastern town of Changwon in South Gyeongsang Province. The Dinos' corporate owner, the game developer NCSOFT, is headquartered in Seongnam. "With the popularity of baseball at a peak, it's only natural for the city of Seongnam to show interest in hosting a professional baseball club," a Dinos official said. "Given the long relationship between NCSOFT and Seongnam, if the city makes us a good offer, we will seriously consider it." The Dinos and Changwon have been at odds for months. On March 29, an aluminum panel fell from above a concession stand at Changwon NC Park and killed an unsuspecting fan during a Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) game, prompting extensive safety inspections and maintenance work at the stadium while the Dinos spent the next month and a half on the road. 2 star pitchers set for 1st KBO regular-season meeting

It has been nearly two decades in the making, and Ryu Hyun-jin of the Hanwha Eagles and Kim Kwang-hyun of the SSG Landers, two iconic pitchers in the annals of Korean baseball, will finally start a regular-season game opposite each other. Barring any last-minute weather change or sudden shifts in the teams' pitching plans, Ryu, 38, and Kim, 37, are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Saturday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. Ryu, who made his Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) debut in 2006, and Kim, who followed a year later, have been among the very best starters of their generations. Ryu won both the regular-season MVP and the Rookie of the Year awards in 2006. Kim helped his SK Wyverns — the former incarnation of the Landers — win the Korean Series title as a raw rookie in 2007 and then won the regular-season MVP award in 2008. Ryu won a couple of ERA titles and led the KBO in strikeouts five times between 2006 and 2012, while Kim nearly won the Triple Crown in 2008. Both also pitched in Major League Baseball -- Ryu from 2013 to 2023, and Kim fro

Hulk Hogan, who helped turn pro wrestling into billion-dollar spectacle, dies at 71

Hulk Hogan, the American sports and entertainment star who made professional wrestling a global phenomenon and loudly supported Donald Trump for U.S. president, has died at the age of 71, World Wrestling Entertainment said on Thursday. "WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture's most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s," WWE said in a statement. Police in Clearwater, Florida, said authorities had responded to a medical call for a cardiac arrest at Hogan's residence on Thursday morning. Hogan was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, they said. The bleach-blond, mahogany-tanned behemoth became the face of professional wrestling in the 1980s, helping transform the mock combat from a seedy spectacle into family-friendly entertainment worth billions of dollars. A key moment in that evolution came at the WrestleMania III extravaganza in 1987, when Hogan, billed at 6'8", hoisted fellow wrestler André the Giant before a sold-out Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan for a thunderous body slam of t

Korean city signs deal with Manchester City on youth development, coach education

The eastern Korean city of Samcheok and the Premier League giants Manchester City announced Thursday they have reached an agreement aimed at enhancing youth football development and coach education. According to Samcheok, located in the southernmost part of Gangwon Province on the east coast, the partnership deal is Manchester City's first in Korea. Samcheok said Manchester City's coaches will visit the Korean city twice a year to run youth football programs — the first one is set for September — and also train local coaches. Also as part of this initiative, a select group of young players from Samcheok will have the chance to travel to Manchester and train with the 10-time Premier League champions. Samcheok said it will offer full support for the development of young players and local coaches and continue to expand local football infrastructure. "I am very pleased to have laid the foundation for our young players to develop as they receive structured training from one of the world's leading clubs," Samcheok Mayor Park Sang-soo said. Korean swimmers looking to defend world titles in Singapore

Led by a pair of defending champions, the Korean national swimming team departed for Singapore on Thursday for the upcoming world championships. Hwang Sun-woo, the 2024 world champion in the men's 200-meter freestyle, and Kim Woo-min, the reigning men's 400m freestyle champion, will headline the team, with the races scheduled to begin Sunday. Kim will get the ball rolling in the heats and the final in the 400m set for Sunday. Hwang's quest for his second straight gold in the 200m freestyle will begin with the heats and the semifinals Monday and then the final Tuesday. Those two will then join teammates Lee Ho-joon and Kim Young-beom in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay Aug. 1. In the 200m, Hwang won silver in 2022 and bronze in 2023 before reaching the top of the podium in 2024. He is the only Korean swimmer to win a medal at three consecutive world championships and will try to make it four in a row. "I've made the podium at world championships every year since 2022, and I'd love to be back on it this time," Hwang told reporters at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, before his

Rays' Kim Ha-seong misses 2nd straight game with back tightness

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Kim Ha-seong has missed his second straight game with lower back tightness, though he should be ready to return for the start of the next series. Kim watched his Rays fall to the Chicago White Sox 11-9 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday (local time). Kim exited the game against the White Sox on Monday after his back tightened up following his steal of second base. He apparently felt better the following day but did not play. Before Wednesday's game, Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters Kim was potentially available off the bench but elected not to play him. The Rays have a day off Thursday and will then embark on a seven-game road trip Friday, starting in Cincinnati. Kim is expected to be back in the lineup by then. He has only played 10 games this season. He made his season debut July 4 after recovering from last fall's shoulder surgery and then promptly missed three games with calf problems. Kim is batting .226/.314/.355 with a homer, three RBIs and four steals this season. Elsewhere in the majors, Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Do
