Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Sports writer Fabrizio Romano also reported that negotiations have made significa

Hwang Sun-woo finishes 4th in men's 200m freestyle at swimming worlds

South Korean swimmer Hwang Sun-woo finished fourth in the men's 200-meter freestyle at the world championships in Singapore on Tuesday, coming up short of his fourth consecutive medal in his main event. Hwang hit the pad in 1:44.72 to miss out on the podium at the World Aquatics Championships at the World Aquatics Championships Arena in Singapore. David Popovici of Romania, the 2022 champ, won his second career world title in 1:43.53, and Luke Hobson of the United States took the silver in 1:43.84. Tatsuya Murasa, an 18-year-old from Japan, beat Hwang for the bronze medal by clocking 1:44.54. Hwang, swimming in Lane 5 as the second-fastest qualifier from the semifinals, had the second-fastest reaction time with 0.62 second, just behind Murasa's 0.60. At the halfway point, Hobson was in the lead at 50.07 seconds, followed by Popovici (50.58) and Hwang (50.76). Murasa, who touched the 100m mark in 51.07 seconds, moved ahead of Hwang at the 150m mark and then covered the final 50m in 26.66 seconds to hold off the South Korean by 0.18 at the end. Hwang came home in 26.83 seconds, but his split

Team K League coach wants players to make fans proud in match vs. Newcastle

It is not often that K League players get to face stars from European clubs. And when the chosen few of Team K League, selected by fans and coaches, go up against Newcastle United on Wednesday, head coach Kim Pan-gon wants them to capitalize on that opportunity. "I think this will be a chance for us to see how we stack up against Europe-based stars," Kim said Tuesday in his press conference at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. The stadium will host the exhibition match between Team K League and Newcastle, the English Football League Cup champions, at 8 p.m. Wednesday as part of the annual Coupang Play Series. "And I hope our players will be motivated to overcome these challenges and use this experience as an opportunity to grow further," Kim added. "In our meeting today, I told the players that we have to give our best effort for fans tomorrow. My staff and I have devised strong game plans, and I hope the players will execute them and make our K League fans proud." Kim was picked to coach Team K League as head coach of the defending K League 1 champions, Ulsan HD FC.

Newcastle United coach vows to 'do everything I can' to play Korean teen in preseason match

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe said Tuesday he will do "everything I can" to put the club's new Korean signing, Park Seung-soo, into their preseason game on Park's home soil this week. Newcastle United will take on Team K League, made up of All-Stars from the top Korean league, at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, about 30 kilometers south of Seoul. It will be the first of two matches for Newcastle for this year's Coupang Play Series, run by the namesake local streaming service. The Magpies, the reigning English Football League Cup champions, will play UEFA Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur, captained by Korean superstar Son Heung-min, at 8 p.m. Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium Before arriving in Korea, Newcastle announced their signing of Park. Though the 18-year-old hadn't initially been on the club's Asian traveling squad, he was on the bench for Newcastle's friendly against Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday. Wednesday's match will be at Park's old stomping ground, with his ex-K League 2 club, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, based at Suwon World Cup Stadium. As

In-form Korean veteran goes for 2nd career LPGA major in Wales

Days after her runner-up finish in Scotland, Korea's Kim Hyo-joo will take aim at her second career LPGA major title in Wales starting Thursday. Kim will be among 144 players teeing off at the AIG Women's Open at the par-72 Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales, with $9.5 million in total purse up for grabs and the champion taking home $1,425,000. It will be the last of five LPGA majors in 2025. After finishing second to Lottie Woad of England at the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open on Sunday, Kim moved up two spots to reach No. 8 in the world rankings -- the second-highest position for a Korean player behind only seventh-ranked Ryu Hae-ran. Kim, though, is having a stronger season than Ryu. Both have won an LPGA tournament each this year, but Kim is fourth in the Player of the Year standings on the strength of her five top-10 finishes. Ryu is 19th, having recorded just one other top-10 showing aside from her victory. Kim is also fourth overall in scoring average at 69.88 and third in both putts per round with 28.68 and in driving accuracy with 81.4 percent. In scrambling percenta

K League All-Star squad replaces 2 players ahead of friendly vs. Newcastle

The Korean league All-Star squad set to face Newcastle United in a friendly match replaced two players Monday. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) said Pohang Steelers defender Lee Tae-seok and Daejeon Hana Citizen defender Kim Moon-hwan will not be available for Team K League against Newcastle at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Both players had been voted on to the starting XI by fans, with Lee finishing second in votes and Kim ranking fourth. However, Kim sustained an unspecified injury during a recent K League match. Lee is finalizing a move to Austria Wien in the top Austrian league. In their stead, the K League selected Pohang defender Eo Jeong-won and FC Anyang defender Thomas Oude Kotte. Eo is in his second season with Pohang after splitting the three previous seasons with second-division clubs Busan IPark and Gimpo FC. He has emerged as a fixture on Pohang's defense this year. Thomas, as he is called in the K League, has a goal and an assist in 23 matches this year, his first in Korea.

Korea to host Czechia in exhibition baseball games in Seoul

Korea will host the Czech Republic for a pair of baseball exhibition games in Seoul this fall under an agreement signed Monday. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced it reached a deal with the Czech Baseball Association to pit their respective national teams against each other on Nov. 8 and 9 at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. KBO Commissioner Heo Koo-youn and Czech Ambassador to Korea Ivan Jancarek signed the agreement during a ceremony at the KBO headquarters Monday. The KBO said the two matches will be part of the "K-Baseball Series" launched in 2024 with exhibition games against Cuba, designed to give the national team a chance to compete against other countries during the KBO offseason. After playing Czechia, Korea will travel to Tokyo to face Japan on Nov. 15 and 16. Czechia is an emerging baseball country, ranked 15th in the World Baseball Softball Federation rankings — the third-highest position among European nations. Czechia made its World Baseball Classic (WBC) debut in 2023 and competed in Pool B alongside Korea, Japan, Australia and China. The European team will also pl

Red-hot Giants looking to stretch season-best winning streak in KBO

In hot pursuit of their first postseason berth in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) since 2017, the Lotte Giants will try to extend their season-best winning streak with games against teams in the bottom third of the standings this week. The Giants have won five straight, highlighted by a three-game weekend sweep of the reeling defending champions, Kia Tigers, at Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan, about 320 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The run has pushed the Giants' record to 53-42-3 (wins-losses-ties), keeping them firmly in third place behind the Hanwha Eagles (57-36-3) and the LG Twins (55-40-2). Those top three teams have opened some gap between themselves and the rest of the pack, with the fourth-place KT Wiz (50-45-3) sitting three games back of the Giants. The Giants will stay at Sajik to open the new week with a Tuesday-Thursday series against the eighth-place NC Dinos (43-44-5). The Dinos have the second-longest active winning streak in the KBO at three games, thanks to their sweep of the last-place Kiwoom Heroes (28-67-3). The Dinos flexed their muscle by putting up 36 runs

Kim Hyo-joo falls short of 2nd LPGA win of season in Scotland

Held back by a couple of late bogeys, Korean veteran Kim Hyo-joo has come up short of her second LPGA title of the season in Scotland. Kim finished as the runner-up at the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Scotland, on Sunday (local time), after shooting a four-under 68 in the final round for her four-day total of 18-under 270. Kim, world No. 10, ended up three strokes behind Lottie Woad of England, a former top-ranked amateur playing in her first tournament as a professional. Kim also finished second at the 2023 Women's Scottish Open. The 19 LPGA tournaments this season have all produced different champions, the longest such streak to start a season in the tour's history. Kim, who won the Ford Championship in March, was trying to end that string and become the first multiple LPGA champion of 2025. Kim made four birdies — three straight starting on the par-5 fifth — and a bogey on the front nine and then opened the back nine with back-to-back birdies. The one on the par-3 11th pulled her into a tie for the lead with Woad at 19-under par. Woad birdied the

An Se-young withdraws from China Open semifinal due to knee injury

Korean badminton star An Se-young withdrew from the China Open semifinals to protect her knee, ending her bid for a historic sweep of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super 1000 series this year. An retired during her women’s singles semifinal match against China’s Han Yue at the China Open on Saturday, part of the BWF Super 1000 series, held in Changzhou in Jiangsu province. After dropping the first set 18-21, An trailed 6-11 in the second before deciding to forfeit the match. Her withdrawal dashed hopes of completing the first-ever “Super 1000 Slam,” as she had already won three of the tour’s four top-tier events this year, including the Malaysia Open, All England Open and Indonesia Open. She had also claimed titles at the India Open, Japan Open, and Orléans Masters. A Korea Badminton Association official said An’s decision was made to prioritize recovery ahead of the World Championships next month in Paris. “She’s physically fatigued and her knee isn’t in good condition,” the official said. “There were concerns about aggravating the injury, so she made the p
