Korea needs a bigger and better coaching pool

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Newcastle coach looks forward to sharing 'great moment' with Son in likely Tottenham finale

Newcastle United's preseason match against Tottenham Hotspur in Seoul, Sunday, will take on extra significance for football fans in South Korea after Tottenham's South Korean captain Son Heung-min announced Saturday he will leave the Premier League club this summer. The match at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. Sunday could be Son's final one with the North London club, and Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said on the eve of the match that he was looking forward to being part of it all. I think he's one of the legends of the Premier League," Howe said at his prematch press conference in Seoul on Saturday. "I've never spent time with him, but he seems like an incredible professional and an incredible person. So it'll be a really great moment to share his last game for Tottenham against us, and hopefully, it's a memorable occasion for him." Before managing Newcastle, Howe also coached AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League early in Son's England career, which started in 2015. "We've come up against him many times. I thought he was fantastic," Howe said. "His pace, dribbling ability, desire

Son Heung-min leaves Tottenham with legacy fully secured

Having spent the past 10 years with Tottenham Hotspur, South Korean icon Son Heung-min is leaving the Premier League club with his legacy fully secured. Son announced his decision to leave at a press conference in Seoul on Saturday, the eve of Tottenham's preseason match against Newcastle United at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Entering the final year of his deal with Spurs, Son has been in the transfer rumor mill for weeks. And with what the player himself described as "one of the toughest decisions of my football career," Son is going away from a club where he blossomed into a lethal goal scorer and a respected leader. Son started his club career in Germany, making his senior debut with Hamburger SV in 2010 as an 18-year-old. He went on to play for Bayer Leverkusen and logged one match with them in the 2015-2016 season before taking his talent to London and joining Tottenham. He scored just four times in 28 league matches in his first season there but then reeled off eight consecutive seasons of double-digit goals, highlighted by his Golden Boot campaign in 2021-2022. KT Wiz sign new outfielder Andrew Stevenson, release Mel Rojas Jr.

The KT Wiz announced their signing of former major league outfielder Andrew Stevenson on Saturday. In a corresponding move, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club released outfielder Mel Rojas Jr., who had played parts of six seasons with the Wiz in two stints. The Wiz said Stevenson, 31, will make US$200,000 for the rest of the season. He was a second-round choice by the Washington Nationals in the 2015 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft and made his MLB debut with them two years later. He stayed with the Nationals until 2021. Following a full 2022 season in the minors, Stevenson joined the Minnesota Twins as a free agent in 2023. Stevenson played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball last year before returning to the United States to join the Durham Bulls, the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. In 273 career MLB games, Stevenson batted .243 with eight home runs, 50 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He had 53 homers and 252 RBIs with a .290 batting average in seven Triple-A campaigns. In 24 games in Japan, Stevenson batted .161 without a homer or an

Son Heung-min says he is leaving Tottenham after 10 years

Tottenham Hotspur's Korean captain Son Heung-min said Saturday he will leave his Premier League club of 10 years this summer, calling it "one of the toughest decisions of my football career." Son made the announcement during a press conference in Seoul prior to Tottenham's preseason match against Newcastle United at 8 p.m. Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium. "This was not an easy decision, but I have decided to leave the club this summer," Son said, after taking a few moments to gather himself. "I will try my best to have a fun match tomorrow." With the start of the new Premier League season only a couple of weeks away, Son, entering the final year of his contract with Tottenham, had been subject to rampant transfer speculation. He has been linked to Los Angeles FC of Major League Soccer in the United States, with clubs in the Saudi Pro League also believed to be targeting the Korean star. Son declined to announce where he is going or say if he will play another match for Tottenham after Sunday. "I didn't come here to talk about where I am headed. We have some work to do, and we have to fo

Koreans fall off halfway through LPGA major

Korean players are well off the pace at the halfway point of the final LPGA major of the season. Kim Sei-young and Kim A-lim are the top Koreans through 36 holes at the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales, at three-under par, after the former shot a 70 and the latter carded a 71 in the second round Friday (local time). They are tied for seventh place but sit eight strokes back of the leader, Miyu Yamashita of Japan, who pulled away from the field with a bogey-free 65 on Friday. Another Japanese player, Rio Takeda, is alone in second place at eight-under, followed by four players at four-under. Kim Sei-young, a 12-time LPGA winner with one major title, had four birdies and a bogey on the front nine but had two birdies, one bogey and one double bogey over her final nine holes. She came into this tournament having recorded three top-10 finishes in her past five starts. "I played quite solid today because I made a lot of pars," Kim said. "But on some holes, I made the same mistakes as yesterday and put my tee shots into bunkers." With Yamashita so far ahead of her,

K League champions Ulsan HD part ways with head coach Kim Pan-gon

The three-time defending South Korean football champions Ulsan HD FC announced Friday they have terminated their contract with head coach Kim Pan-gon, barely a year after hiring him. Ulsan HD said the decision was reached through a mutual agreement between the club and the departing coach. Kim will coach his final match at 7 p.m. Saturday against Suwon FC at Munsu Football Stadium in Ulsan, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul. Ulsan HD brought in Kim on July 28 last year to replace Hong Myung-bo, who had left for the South Korean men's national team after coaching Ulsan HD to back-to-back K League 1 titles in 2022 and 2023. They were in their season-low fourth place when Kim was hired, but won eight of their first 11 matches under the new coach to claim their third consecutive title. Kim had played for Ulsan's championship squad in 1996, making him the first man to win the league title with Ulsan both as player and head coach. This year, Ulsan HD put together an early three-match winning streak, seemingly on their way to another title, before fading away badly. They are winless in thei

Landers ready to go for it in August with injured players returning

The SSG Landers closed out July on a four-game winning streak, which pushed them to fourth place in the Korea Baseball Organization at 48-46-4 (wins-losses-ties). With the calendar having flipped to August and injured players on their way back, manager Lee Sung-yong said the Landers are ready to separate themselves from the crowded middle of the standings. Before their road game against the Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Friday, the Landers were in a virtual tie for fourth with the KT Wiz (50-48-3), only ahead of them by the winning percentage, .511 to .510. The Landers are only two games ahead of the eighth-place NC Dinos but sit five games back of the third-place Lotte Giants. "I keep telling my players that we have to play our game and stay locked in, and then the rest will take care of itself," Lee said in his pregame media scrum. "I think we have to be sharper with our fielding. Our middle relievers have been outstanding and they have to make sure they can stay healthy in August. I've always thought August would be the most crucial month of the season for us, a

New Eagles outfielder Son Ah-seop vows to prove his worth after trade

A day after being traded to the first-place club in South Korean baseball, veteran outfielder/designated hitter Son Ah-seop said Friday he will try to prove his worth on his new team. The Hanwha Eagles acquired Son, 37, from the NC Dinos in exchange for cash and a third-round draft pick for 2026 in a major Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) trade Thursday night. The move came on the annual trade deadline. The Eagles are leading the 10-team KBO with a record of 59-37-3 (wins-losses-ties), and they brought in the league's all-time hits leader, long known for contact ability and on-base skills, as they try to lock down the regular-season title and earn a bye to the Korean Series. In a parting interview uploaded on the Dinos' YouTube channel, Son thanked fans of his former club. "I am taking nothing but fond memories from my time with NC," said Son, who signed with the Dinos as a free agent in December 2021 after 14 seasons with the Lotte Giants. "I hope fans will keep rooting for me. Now I will try to prove why the Eagles chose me." Son is a career .320 hitter with 2,583 hits. He was batting

Rookie Yoon Ina, veteran Chun In-gee sit 2 off opening-round lead at LPGA major

Korean rookie Yoon Ina and three-time major champion Chun In-gee are both two strokes off the first-round lead at the final major tournament of the 2025 LPGA Tour season in Wales. The two players shot a three-under 69 to begin the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales, on Thursday (local time). Yoon, seeking her first career LPGA title, had five birdies against two bogeys. Chun, a four-time tour winner without a title since June 2022, had four birdies and one bogey. They are in a 10-way tie for fourth place, with two Japanese players, Eri Okayama and Rio Takeda, sharing the lead at five-under on this par-72 course that played 6,570 yards on the first day. Three of Chun's four LPGA wins have come at three different majors -- 2015 U.S. Women's Open, 2016 Evian Championship and 2022 KPMG Women's PGA Championship -- and a win in Wales will give her a career Grand Slam. "When I started golf, I always wanted to be a good golfer. Now, I can try to reach the career Grand Slam. I think, from this position, I'm still very appreciative for everything," Chun said. "Just ke

Yamal grabs brace as FC Barcelona beat FC Seoul in S. Korea friendly

Teen phenom Lamine Yamal grabbed a brace and Polish star Robert Lewandowski also found the back of the net, as FC Barcelona defeated FC Seoul 7-3 in their preseason friendly match in Seoul on Thursday. Barca, one of the world's most decorated football clubs with 28 La Liga titles and dozens of other domestic and continental trophies, celebrated their first appearance in South Korea in 15 years with a wildly entertaining performance before 62,482 fans at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick started three of the club's brightest stars, with Yamal, Lewandowski and Raphinha leading the attack, and midfielder Pedri and Dani Olmo also joining them. Those big names did not disappoint. Lewandowski opened the scoring with an easy goal in the eighth minute. Yamal struck the right goal post with his initial shot, and the ball bounced right back to Lewandowski, who had the gaping net in front of him with goalkeeper Kang Hyeon-mu down and out. Yamal had his moment in the 14th minute, when he fired a left-footed shot past Kang from just outside the box. The FC Seoul custodian only got a
