Kookmin University team co-develops technology of calculating how much carbon trees store

A Kookmin University research team has developed a technology that can measure the amount of carbon stored in trees in a nondestructive way in collaboration with the Sejong National Arboretum. The university said Friday that the development is the outcome of an agreement it signed with the arboretum in September 2024 to co-develop a technology that would enhance the carbon storage capacity of urban forests. The arboretum is affiliated with the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute which is responsible for operating national arboretums in the country while conserving, enhancing and restoring forest biodiversity. Led by Kang Wan-mo, a professor in the Department of Forestry, Environment and Systems, the team devised the method of predicting trees’ carbon storage capacity last year by using drone-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) equipment. Since then, the team has advanced the method by using ground-based LiDAR devices, finally developing the technology for calculating how much carbon trees absorb in urban gardens and forests. Sejong University’s Graduate School of Virtual Convergence held an exhibition showcasing immersive brand experience projects at its campus in Seoul early June. The university said Friday the BrandVerse Exhibition, held June 8 in the school's Jingwan Hall, showcased the outcomes of projects completed by students over the semester. The exhibition unveiled immersive brand experience content using various digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), extended reality (XR), interactive media and spatial experience design. “BrandVerse” is a combination of “brand” and “universe.” It implies that a brand can expand beyond a mere visual identity into an entire universe of its own. The university said the event proposed a new approach to brand communication in which visitors actively explore, interact with and experience brands, moving beyond the conventional way of simply consuming brands. University of Seoul to dispatch global volunteer team to Kyrgyzstan in July

The University of Seoul will dispatch a summer global volunteer team to Kyrgyzstan on July 4 to provide Korean language and cultural programs as well as sports activities in Bishkek, the university said Wednesday. The university held a ceremony to launch “ 2026 Summer University of Seoul Global Volunteers: Kyrgyzstan” at the Centennial Memorial Hall on its campus in Seoul, Tuesday. The team, consisting of 25 students and three faculty and staff members, marks the university’s 23rd overseas volunteer dispatch to the Central Asian country. During their 12-day stay in Kyrgyzstan, the volunteers will provide Korean language education for local students and ethnic Koreans in Bishkek as well as specialized programs based on their majors and expertise. They will also offer cultural and sports programs, including K-pop dance, cheerleading and taekwondo. Kookmin University has developed two Korean typefaces to embody its history and future vision in celebration of its 80th anniversary this year. The university said Wednesday that the development was carried out for nearly a year to establish a consistent design identity across various anniversary projects and to reflect its unique identity in both internal and external communications. It noted that the new typefaces, Sungkok Font and Haeong Font, focus on capturing the university’s beginnings and its future vision. Korea University to launch International Summer Campus 2026 Saturday

Korea University is launching International Summer Campus (ISC) 2026, the nation’s largest summer university program for international students, at its Seoul campus on Saturday. The university said Wednesday that more than 2,000 students from around 300 universities in some 50 countries will participate in the ISC, which consists of four-week and six-week programs. Kookmin University students win Red Dot Design Award

Two design students from Kookmin University have won the prestigious Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2026 for their innovative insulin pen design, the university said Monday. Mobilintec, a mobility and transportation data startup, plans to develop and demonstrate an agentic artificial intelligence (AI)-based traffic collision prediction and response system for local roads as part of a government-led project to develop innovative AI city technologies. A Kookmin University research team has developed a new technology that helps artificial intelligence (AI) better understand 3D environments when objects are hidden from view or visual information is limited. The university said Friday that a paper detailing the technology has been accepted for presentation at the 2026 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) set for Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 in Pittsburgh. The team was led by Lee Seong-won, professor at the university’s School of Electrical Engineering. The team included Kim Jun-ho, a senior majoring in electrical engineering.
