Korea's Supreme Court seeks damages against pro-Yoon courthouse rioters

The Korean Supreme Court filed a civil lawsuit seeking 1.2 billion won ($795,000) in damages against people involved in last year’s courthouse riot linked to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, marking a rare case of the judiciary taking legal action against private individuals. The National Court Administration (NCA), a Supreme Court unit responsible for overseeing the judiciary’s administrative affairs, said Wednesday it filed a damages lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court against five people convicted over their involvement in the Seoul Western District Court riot, seeking 1.18 billion won in repair costs for property damage, along with interest for delayed payment. The "Republic of Korea" is listed as the plaintiff in the lawsuit. “The riot constitutes a collective act of violence and destruction against a courthouse, where the country’s judicial functions are carried out,” the NCA said. “It was a serious illegal act that severely undermined the court’s function and authority, and it is necessary to hold those who participated in the riot strictly accountable und

Police to reexamine 310,000 missing person cases closed in past 3 years

Police plan to conduct a comprehensive review of about 310,000 missing person cases closed over the past three years following controversies surrounding a missing person case on the southern island of Jeju. The National Police Agency (NPA) is preparing a set of measures aimed at overhauling its missing person investigation system, with the review scheduled to be completed by November, officials said. The agency will identity cases considered particularly vulnerable to improper closure and recheck whether the missing persons are safe and whether the cases were handled appropriately. If the review uncovers cases suspected of having been handled improperly or inadequately, the NPA will immediately reopen the investigations and report the findings to relevant regional authorities. Provincial and metropolitan police agencies will also review cases closed by police stations in their jurisdictions every week and order reinvestigations when necessary. The move comes after a police officer was found to have closed a missing person case in May without confirming the woman's safety. Her body was fou

Police probe bomb threat emails sent to about 40 courts

Police said Wednesday they are investigating anonymous emails threatening to bomb about 40 courthouses across the country. About 40 courthouses, including the Seoul Eastern District Court, Incheon District Court, Chuncheon District Court, Daejeon District Court, Gwangju High Court and Busan High Court, received threatening emails indicating that explosives have been planted, according to the police. The emails reportedly claimed that homemade bombs had been planted at the respective courts and would be detonated at a specific time. The police deployed initial response teams and special forces to the concerned courts but determined that the possibility of actual explosives being planted is low. The Supreme Court also confirmed that the 40-odd courts had received threatening emails, saying police officers had completed searches and other operations at the courts. The Korean National Police Agency suspects the latest threatening emails may be part of a series of hoax threats originating from Japan that have been repeatedly sent since 2023.

Police say missing woman on Jeju likely died soon after disappearing

Police suspect the woman found dead in a high-profile missing person case on the southern resort island of Jeju likely died soon after she disappeared in May, officials said Wednesday. The body of 37-year-old Jang Mi-ran was discovered Monday in a forest near the long-term accommodation she had stayed at until her disappearance on May 12, three days before she was first reported missing. From the night she went missing until her phone turned off, there were no changes in her phone's location or any calls made, the Jeju Provincial Police Agency told a briefing. Based on such conditions, they believe she likely died in the early hours of May 13. The police reiterated the low likelihood of foul play, citing the location and position of Jang's body when it was found, as well as preliminary autopsy findings suggesting she died by hanging. Investigators said they also found a cord belonging to Jang at the scene but added they will keep all possibilities open in the investigation. The story has drawn nationwide attention after a police officer was found to have closed Jang's case hours after her

Woman faces prosecution over ticket scalping involving BTS, other concerts

A woman in her 30s has been referred to the prosecution for allegedly using a software program to purchase concert tickets for popular singers, including BTS, and reselling them at a markup, police said Wednesday. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said the woman, whose identity was withheld, was sent to prosecutors without detention on Aug. 21 on charges of obstruction of business, and violating the information network and public performance laws. The scalping suspect is accused of using a macro program to fraudulently purchase about 2,600 concert ticket using accounts registered under the names of family members and acquaintances from April 2023 to March this year, and reselling them at higher prices. She is also suspected of using the same method to reserve nine tickets for BTS' Gwanghwamun concert on Feb. 23 but failed to resell them after being caught by police. The police uncovered her crime while intensively monitoring the ticket reservation process for the BTS concert in March. They have also applied for the forfeiture of 442 million won ($320,000) in criminal proceeds. The revi

7 gov't officials referred to prosecution for alleged cover-up linked to 2024 Jeju Air crash

Seven transport ministry officials have been referred to prosecutors for allegedly covering up the unfit status of a localizer blamed for the high number of casualties in the 2024 Jeju Air plane crash, police said Wednesday. The deadly crash on Dec. 29, 2024, killed 179 passengers and crew members when the passenger jet made an emergency belly landing at Muan International Airport, about 290 kilometers south of Seoul, and hit a concrete mound housing the localizer, a navigation system that assists aircraft landings. The seven officials were referred to the prosecution Tuesday for allegedly drafting press releases claiming the localizer was installed in line with regulations despite knowing it was not, according to a special police investigation team. Following the crash, the localizer's placement inside the concrete mound had drawn questions about whether it contributed to the high death toll. The transport ministry soon after distributed two press releases that claimed the localizer complied with regulations. The police team believes ministry officials drafted the documents by omitting

JEJU — A body discovered on the southern island of Jeju has been confirmed to be that of Jang Mi-ran, a missing woman whose case was allegedly closed prematurely in May, police said Tuesday. The body was found the previous day in a forest located only about a kilometer away from the long-term accommodation facility where the 37-year-old had stayed until her disappearance on May 12.
