Hyosung launches hyperscale AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group is expanding its push into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the launch of a hyperscale data center in Seoul, marking its entry into Korea’s fast-growing data center market. The company announced Wednesday that Hyosung-STT GDC, a joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and Singapore-based operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), opened STT Seoul 1, a 30-megawatt data center, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, the previous day. Designed to support cloud and AI workloads, the new facility combines Hyosung’s power infrastructure expertise with STT GDC's global standards in data center design, operation and service management. The facility is capable of accommodating increasingly power-intensive and high-density computing environments driven by generative AI applications. The company explained that one of the center's biggest advantages is its location in Seoul, where securing large-scale power capacity has become increasingly difficult due to energy regulations and grid constraints, providing low-latency connectivity to major business districts

DeepMind chief reunites with legendary Go player 10 years after historic match

Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google DeepMind, reunited Wednesday with Korea's legendary Go player Lee Se-dol, who went up against the company's AlphaGo AI in a legendary human-versus-machine match 10 years ago. "It's great to be back here kind of the center of where it all started" Hassabis said at the event held by Google in central Seoul, saying that the historic five-game match "signaled the beginning of these incredible advances that happened in the last decade." When asked about the Lee-AlphaGo match in 2016, the Google executive pointed to the AI's move 37 as the "most incredible moment" that demonstrated that AI can show creativity. During game two of the 2016 match, AlphaGo made an unconventional shoulder hit on the fifth line for its 37th move, widely considered a pivotal move that secured its victory against Lee. Such AI creativity can usher in a new "renaissance" of humans flourishing in science, he said, as it did in helping him solve the 50-year-old "protein folding problem," which led to a Nobel prize in 2024. "I think we could maybe even like solve all diseases in the

Hyundai Glovis introduces world’s largest car carrier

Hyundai Glovis has deployed the ultra-large pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) Glovis Leader, capable of transporting 10,800 vehicles, into finished-vehicle maritime shipping, the company said Wednesday. The vessel measures 230 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 102,590 tons. Its loading space is equivalent to about 28 football fields. Hyundai Glovis is the first global car carrier operator to introduce a PCTC with capacity exceeding 10,000 vehicles. The Glovis Leader is equipped with a liquefied natural gas dual-fuel propulsion engine and an alternative maritime power (AMP) system, enabling it to comply with tightening global environmental regulations, including the emissions trading scheme of the European Union. The AMP system allows the vessel to use shore electricity while docked, reducing air pollutant emissions by eliminating onboard fuel-based power generation. Hyundai Glovis plans to deploy the Glovis Leader across its global shipping routes. By 2030, the company aims to expand its PCTC fleet to 128 vessels and transport 5 million vehicles annually

Ambassadors' spouses experience Korea's traditional liquor

Spouses of diplomatic ambassadors in Korea experienced a curated selection of the country’s traditional alcoholic beverages paired with Korean cuisine in a government-hosted event Wednesday aimed at promoting Korea’s gastronomic culture. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said the dignitaries gathered at Korea House in Seoul, run by the Korea Heritage Agency, for the event, which was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The invitation follows the government’s designation of its embassies in 30 countries as official outposts for promoting Korean food and traditional liquor. Thirty-six Korean traditional alcoholic beverages — ranging from makgeolli (fermented rice wine) to yakju (refined rice wine), fruit wine and soju (distilled rice wine) — were served. Authorities said the selection of "K-Sool," referring to Korean liquor, was handpicked by a special committee based on each product’s recipe, history and philosophy. The government added that it has finalized the nomenclature for the four alcohol categories and will begin promoting them worldwi

Tennessee official visits Korea Zinc facility for US project cooperation

Korea Zinc, the world's biggest refined zinc smelter, said Wednesday Stuart McWhorter, deputy governor of Tennessee, visited its facility to discuss cooperation on a U.S. metals refinery project. Under the project, dubbed "Project Crucible," the company plans to break ground on a metals refinery in Clarksville, Tennessee, next year and begin producing 13 nonferrous metals from 2029. During the visit, McWhorter toured Korea Zinc's Onsan metals refinery in Ulsan, and discussed potential collaboration on the U.S. project, the company said in a press release. The Onsan facility will serve as a model for the planned U.S. smelter. McWhorter said the Crucible project is expected to support the local economy in Tennessee, strengthen business ties between Seoul and Washington, and bolster supply chains for critical materials. He also serves as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD). Korea Zinc said it has recently acquired a local zinc smelter and related firms, and plans to carry out the project by expanding and upgrading existing facilities.

LX Hausys wins Red Dot Award for eco-friendly HIMACS Terrazzo

LX Hausys has won this year’s Red Dot Design Award, one of the world’s top three design accolades. The company said Wednesday that it secured an award in the product design category for its acrylic solid surface product, HIMACS Terrazzo, recognized for both its distinctive design and eco-friendly use of recycled materials. The Red Dot Design Award, alongside Germany’s iF Design Award and the U.S.-based IDEA Design Award, is widely regarded as a benchmark for global design excellence. HIMACS Terrazzo reinterprets the traditional Italian terrazzo technique —where marble chips or stone fragments are embedded in cement to create a richly textured surface — into a modern aesthetic. LX Hausys applied this concept to acrylic solid surfaces, creating refined yet dynamic patterns that mimic the texture and visual depth of classic terrazzo while offering modern versatility. Beyond design, the product was evaluated positively for its environmental sustainability. The material incorporates recycled content derived from leftover fragments generated during the production and processing of art

Naver upgrades AI comment filter to block posts targeting victims, families

Naver, Korea’s dominant internet portal, said Wednesday that it has upgraded its artificial intelligence (AI) moderation system to more aggressively filter content related to self-harm and the harassment of crime victims. The update, known as “AI Cleanbot 3.0,” expands the portal’s automated oversight to include comments that glorify death or suicide. Introduced in November 2019 as the Korean internet industry’s first AI-based comment filter, the system will also target hateful language aimed at victims of accidents and crimes, as well as their families, amid rising concern over secondary victimization in online spaces. The new version adds two priority detection categories for comments that promote or trivialize suicide, death or bodily harm, and derogatory, mocking or hateful comments directed at accident or crime victims and their families. A key technical advance in version 3.0 is context-aware detection. Previous versions analyzed comment text in isolation; the upgraded model incorporates article headlines and body text to assess comments in their editorial context, allow
