Lee Kang-in on verge of Spain return with Atletico Madrid switch

Korean men's national football team member Lee Kang-in is reportedly in the final stages of completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid, with personal terms already agreed and only the remaining details between the Spanish club and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) left to be finalized. If the move is completed, Lee would become the first Asian player for Atletico Madrid. Spanish daily Marca reported Saturday that Atletico is wrapping up negotiations for its first signings ahead of the new season. The club is pursuing Alejandro Grimaldo and Lee as key additions to its squad. According to the report, Atletico is expected to announce Grimaldo's signing within days, before turning its full attention to finalizing Lee's transfer. Lee's transfer fee is expected to be around 35 million euros ($41 million), with additional performance-related bonuses potentially increasing the overall package. Combined with Grimaldo's reported 20 million euro fee, Atletico would invest roughly 55 million euros in its first two summer signings. Free agent pitcher Go Woo-suk nearing new US minor league deal

Korean free agent pitcher Go Woo-suk is nearing a new minor league deal in the United States after being released last week, sources close to the pitcher said Tuesday. According to the sources, the right-hander is close to signing a deal with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Go, 26, was released by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, last Tuesday after posting a 1.59 ERA over 5 2/3 innings in five appearances. Go signed with the San Diego Padres in January 2024, after seven seasons with the LG Twins in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). He had been among the top closers in the KBO but never played in a big league game for the Padres, who kept him in the minors before trading him to the Marlins in May 2024. Go also failed to reach the majors with the Marlins, who designated him for assignment only a few weeks after acquiring him last year. The pitcher was a non-roster invitee to the Marlins' spring training this year but suffered a broken finger that prevented him from competing for a roster spot. After returning

Host Korea among 7 countries to qualify for LPGA match-play event

The host Korea is among seven nations to have qualified for an LPGA match-play event scheduled for this fall. The LPGA announced Monday (U.S. local time) that Korea, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Sweden, Australia and China will compete in the Oct. 23-26 International Crown. New Korea Country Club in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, will host the four-day match-play competition, which was first held in 2014. The seven national teams were chosen based on the combined number of the world ranking position for their top four players, with the country having the lowest total as of Monday grabbing the top seed. This year's event will also feature a brand new Team World, to be made up of one player each from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa and Oceania. Its lineup, as well as those for the seven countries, will be determined based on the rankings on Aug. 4, following the conclusion of the AIG Women's Open. The U.S. team, led by world No. 1 Nelly Korda, took the top seed with 34 points, followed by Korea (53 points), Japan (74 points), Thailand (88 points), Sweden

Ulsan HD looking to salvage pride, secure big bonus in Club World Cup finale

Even with a knockout berth already out of reach, there is still much at stake for Ulsan HD FC in their final group stage match of the FIFA Club World Cup this week — a measure of pride in abstract terms, but up to $2 million in bonus in more practical terms. After losing their first two matches last week, Ulsan HD will close out Group F play by taking on the German side Borussia Dortmund at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, at 3 p.m. Wednesday (4 a.m. Thursday in Korea). Ulsan HD, three-time defending K League 1 champions, opened their tournament with a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa last Tuesday. Then a 4-2 loss to the Brazilian club Fluminense FC on Saturday eliminated Ulsan HD from knockout contention — reserved only for the top two teams in each of the eight groups. Ulsan HD may be tempted to conserve their energy against Dortmund, with matches in the top national tournament Korea Cup and the K League 1 coming up right around the corner. They are scheduled to arrive back home Saturday afternoon and then will play in the Korea Cup quarterfinals against fellow K Le

National skating chief named top Korean delegate for 2026 Winter Olympics

Korea's top skating official was named the country's chief delegate for the 2026 Winter Olympics on Monday. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) announced that Lee Soo-kyung, president of the Korea Skating Union (KSU), will serve as Korea's chef de mission for the 2026 Winter Games, set to run from Feb. 6 to 22 in Milano and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Lee, 42, will be the first female to serve in that role for Korea at an Olympics. The KSOC said it considered Lee's contributions to the development of sports both at home and abroad, her credentials as an international judge, her leadership and her experience in both competition and administration. A former figure skater and a figure skating judge, Lee took over as the KSU president in February this year. She has also worked on the KSOC's board of directors and was recently elected as head of the Korean association of Olympic winter sports. "I will try to offer my best support for our athletes so that they can all compete to the best of their abilities and do so with a sense of pride," Lee said in a statement released by both the KSO

Men's, women's squads set for host Korea for East Asian football tournament

The host country Korea finalized their men's and women's squads for the upcoming East Asian football tournament on Monday. The Korea Football Association (KFA) unveiled the men's and women's teams, each featuring 23 players, for the July 7-16 East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship. With the tournament not part of the official FIFA international match calendar, the KFA opted for players based mostly in the domestic or other Asian leagues, with no Europe-based stars for men and eight players coming from Europe or North America for women after the KFA had earned their clubs' permission. Coached by Hong Myung-bo, the men's team has 23 based in the K League and three based in Japan's J. League. Seven of those 23 players have earned their first international call-ups, while Na Sang-ho of the Japanese club FC Machida Zelvia has made the national team for the first time since June 2023. The men's team also includes a few names who have appeared during Korea's successful World Cup qualifying campaign, including Ulsan HD FC goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo, FC Seoul defender Kim Jo

Tigers seeking to stretch winning streak vs. last-place club in KBO

The hottest team in Korean baseball will visit the coldest one to begin the new week. The Kia Tigers will ride their season-best six-game winning streak into a three-game series against the Kiwoom Heroes, starting Tuesday at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. It will be the first leg of the Tigers' six-game road trip to the nation's capital. They will visit the LG Twins for three games at Jamsil Baseball Stadium from Friday to Sunday. The Tigers have not lost since June 13 and own the best record in June in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) at 12-5-1 (wins-losses-ties). That run has pushed them to fourth place in the standings at 38-33-2, just 4 1/2 games back of the first-place Hanwha Eagles. The Heroes, on the other hand, have the league's worst record at 21-53-2. They have managed just one win in their past 10 games. The middle of the standings in the 10-team league remains crowded, with the seventh-place KT Wiz (37-35-3) only 1 1/2 games behind the Tigers. Teams will trade places in a hurry with a winning streak or a losing streak of any length. The Eagles (43-29-1) have managed to stay on

Korean players Lee So-mi and Choi Hye-jin have tied for eighth place at the third major tournament of the 2025 LPGA season. Lee and Choi finished at three-over 291 to end as the top Koreans at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco in Frisco, northeast Texas, on Sunday (local time). Lee shot an even 72 in the final round on the par-72 course, which played 6,444 yards Sunday, with six birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys. This was the first career top-10 finish at an LPGA major for the second-year player. Choi, who began the final round tied for third place, dropped five spots after recording two birdies and four bogeys for a 74. This was Choi's third straight top-10 performance at a major — she tied for ninth at the Chevron Championship in April and tied for fourth at the U.S. Women's Open in May. Korean Australian Minjee Lee won the championship at four-under 284 for her third career major title. It was also her 11th career LPGA victory and her first since taking the 2023 BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea. With Lee's win, the LPGA Tour has had a

Choi Hye-jin tied for 3rd entering final round at LPGA major

Korea's Choi Hye-jin is tied for third place heading into the final round of the third major championship of the 2025 LPGA season. Choi shot an even-par 72 in the third round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco in Frisco, northeast Texas, on Saturday (local time). She is one-over for the tournament after 54 holes, seven behind the sole leader, Korean Australian Minjee Lee. Lee and Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, who's at two-under, are the only two players under par for the championship. Lee, with her 69, and another Korean Australian, Grace Kim, who shot 68, were the only two to break 70 in the third round played in windy conditions. Choi, who joined the LPGA Tour in 2022, is seeking her first U.S. tour win. She is coming off a runner-up finish at the Meijer LPGA Classic last week, which came on the heels of consecutive fourth-place finishes at the U.S. Women's Open and the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. This is Choi's 89th career start as an LPGA member. Choi birdied the par-5 third hole, but a double bogey on the par-4 seventh threatened to derail

Ulsan HD eliminated from Club World Cup knockout contention with 2nd loss

Ulsan HD FC have bowed out of knockout contention at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States following their second straight loss. Ulsan HD, three-time defending K League 1 champions, lost to Fluminense FC of Brazil 4-2 in their second Group F match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Saturday (local time). Ulsan HD, the only Korean team in the tournament, opened the proceedings with a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa on Tuesday. And with Borussia Dortmund of Germany having defeated Sundowns 4-3 earlier Saturday, Ulsan had to at least hold Fluminense to stay alive in the tournament. Instead, they blew a 2-1 lead in the second half despite a valiant effort. Ulsan HD will close out the tournament against Borussia Dortmund at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, at 3 p.m. Wednesday (4 a.m. Thursday in Korea). This is the first edition of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, with 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group will reach the knockouts.
