Heroes, Bears make changes with foreign players

Two Korean baseball clubs made changes with their foreign players Monday, with a former league home run leader switching teams midseason. The Kiwoom Heroes said they will pick up former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) home run king Matt Davidson, who was released by another KBO team, NC Dinos, over the weekend. To make room for Davidson, the Heroes released their American starting pitcher Nathan Wiles. KBO teams are each allowed to carry three non-Asian foreign players, with a maximum two pitchers. Clubs typically sign two starting pitchers and one position player from overseas, but the Heroes have elected to go with two hitters and one pitcher, as Davidson joins Keston Hiura in the lineup while Raul Alcantara will be the lone non-Asian pitcher. The Heroes previously bucked the trend at the start of last season, when they had outfielders Yasiel Puig and Ruben Cardenas, along with pitcher Kenny Rosenberg. Davidson led the KBO with 46 home runs in 131 games in 2024, his first campaign in Korea. He followed that up with 36 home runs last year in 112 games. Davidson had eight homers in 63 ga

Lions acquire new pitcher Garabito

The Samsung Lions said Thursday they've acquired former major league pitcher Gerson Garabito. Garabito, 29, will replace Denyi Reyes in the Lions' rotation. Reyes was released Saturday after suffering a stress fracture on his right foot for the second time this season. The Lions said Garabito signed for $356,666 for the remainder of the season and they paid his former club, the Texas Rangers, $200,000 in buyout. Garabito has 21 major league games under his belt, all of them with the Rangers in 2024 and 2025. This year, he pitched to a 9.00 ERA in eight innings across three outings with them. In Triple-A this year, the Dominican right-hander went 0-7 with an 8.53 ERA over 31 2/3 innings. The Lions said Garabito had drawn interest from other teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) and also clubs in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. Per Baseball Savant, Garabito averaged 93.2 miles per hour with his four-seam fastball this year with the Rangers, and also threw curveball, slider, sinker and changeup. Garabito played against the current Lions slugger Lewin Diaz in the Dominican Summe

After military discharge, KBO pitcher Yi Jung-yong wants to be team's lucky charm

In his most recent full season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in 2023, right-hander Yi Jung-yong was an integral part of the LG Twins' run to the Korean Series title. Yi held the KT Wiz scoreless in four innings spread over four outings, as the Twins won the best-of-seven series in five games. Yi was a solid contributor during the 2023 regular season, too. Yi tossed a career-high 86 2/3 innings while splitting his time between the bullpen and the rotation. He went 7-2 with three saves and a hold, and pitched to a 4.15 ERA. Yi began his mandatory military service after that season, joining Sangmu, a minor league club for KBO players fulfilling their service duty. With Yi away, the Twins failed to defend their title in 2024. Yi, 29, rejoined the Twins on Wednesday, a much-needed reinforcement for a bullpen that had been dealing with injuries and inconsistent performances. The Twins are so glad with Yi's return that they even invited him to throw out the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. "I was pretty nervous," Yi said with a grin in a media scrum

Kimchi fuels success for Dinos ace Thompson in 1st KBO season

Having spent his entire collegiate and minor league career in the United States until 2024, Riley Thompson, the first-year pitcher for the NC Dinos in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), feels "blessed" to be able to live in a foreign country and experience a new culture for the first time. It also helps that Thompson is already in love with Korean food, particularly kimchi, the country's signature side dish typically made from fermented cabbage. "I love kimchi. I have to have kimchi every day," Thompson told Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday before the Dinos played the LG Twins at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. "I love it. So that's No. 1. I'm sure every foreigner says Korean barbecue, but Korean barbecue is amazing for a reason. I love kimchi." Thompson, 28, said he was grateful for a chance to pitch in the KBO after spending the first seven years of his professional career without reaching Major League Baseball (MLB). The right-hander pitched for the Iowa Cubs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, in 2023 and 2024. "It was always on my mind that I wanted to come play baseba

LPGA major champion leaning on winning experience in title defense

As she seeks to defend her LPGA major title this week, Korea's Amy Yang will lean on her winning experience from a year ago. Yang will try to win her second straight title at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, which will tee off Thursday at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco in Frisco, northeast Texas. In her pretournament press conference Wednesday, Yang said she was "very excited to come back" as the defending champion. "Been preparing really well with my team and really looking forward to teeing off tomorrow," the 35-year-old said. Yang won the 2024 title for her maiden major in her 75th try. She admitted to battling moments of self-doubt, and emerging as the winner at the end taught her some valuable lessons. "I came very close to (winning) many major championships and never won before, so on Saturday night (before last year's final round), I was very nervous, and I was questioning myself, 'Can I do it this time?'" Yang said. "I just told myself, 'Go out tomorrow and just embrace everything and see what's going to happen.' That experience taught me that I can still do it. If you have dre

Twins walk off Dinos to snap losing streak in KBO

The LG Twins walked off the NC Dinos 9-8 to snap their two-game losing slide in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) on Wednesday, after ending a wildly entertaining contest in an anticlimactic fashion. Song Chan-eui drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom ninth with a fielder's choice groundout, sending 16,103 fans at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul into a frenzy. The Twins improved to 41-28-2, now just a half game back of the Hanwha Eagles for first place. The Dinos dropped to 30-34-4 in eighth place. The Twins scored first in the bottom of the first inning against rookie starter Kim Nok-won. After the game's first two batters reached with a walk and a single, cleanup Moon Bo-gyeong cashed in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly. The Twins tacked on two more runs in the bottom second, with Shin Min-jae's two-out RBI single and a bases-loaded walk by Moon. The Dinos punched back with two runs in the top third. They loaded the bases with two singles and a walk against starter Yonny Chirinos, and Park Min-woo's broken-bat single to center plated two runs. The Dinos then p

Dinos manager none too pleased with players getting hit by pitches

The NC Dinos are leading Korean baseball in one category that their manager Lee Ho-joon would rather they not: hit-by-pitch. Entering Wednesday's game against the LG Twins, the Dinos had been drilled by pitches 66 times, 18 more than the next team, the Hanwha Eagles. The latest victim was All-Star outfielder Park Kun-woo, who was plunked in the face by a fastball from Twins starter Elieser Hernandez during Tuesday's game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. Per rules in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), Hernandez faced automatic ejection for hitting an opponent's head with a fastball. Park did not suffer any structural damage but sustained a bruised left cheekbone. Lee said Wednesday that Park had complained of some dizziness earlier in the day and that the outfielder would be held out of the lineup for the evening. Lee, the first-year manager, said his players have been growing increasingly sensitive about getting plunked by errant pitches. "Some players have talked about retaliating by throwing at the other guys, and I've had to step in and make sure they wouldn't do it. But that's

Korea reaffirms commitment to hosting Invictus Games 2029

Korea's veterans ministry on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the Invictus Games, an international sports event for injured service members, in 2029 after the country submitted an official bid to host the sports event. The central city of Daejeon, some 135 kilometers south of Seoul, was among a list of six cities and regions aspiring to host the 2029 games, along with Aalborg in Denmark, Abuja in Nigeria, Kyiv in Ukraine, San Diego in the United States and the Veneto Region in Italy, according to the Invictus Games Foundation. The ministry anticipated that hosting the games in Daejeon, home to the National Cemetery and a veterans hospital, would help raise awareness for veterans as the first such event to be held in Asia, if it is chosen. "If the Invictus Games are hosted for the first time in Asia in Daejeon, the Republic of Korea's proven resilience, together with its deep respect for service members and veterans, would create an ideal setting to spread the Invictus spirit across Asia and beyond," Veterans Minister Kang Jung-ai said. Korean pitcher Go Woo-suk released by US' Triple-A club

Korean pitcher Go Woo-suk has been released by his minor league club in the United States, becoming a free agent midway through his second season in America. The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, announced Tuesday (local time) that they have cut ties with the right-handed reliever. In five outings with the Jumbo Shrimp this year, Go had a 1.59 ERA over 5 2/3 innings without a win-loss record. Go, 26, signed with the San Diego Padres in January 2024, after seven seasons with the LG Twins in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). He had been among the top closers in the KBO but never played in a big league game for the Padres, who kept him in the minors before trading him to the Marlins in May. Go also failed to make it to the majors with the Marlins, who designated him for assignment only a few weeks after acquiring him last year. For this year, Go was a non-roster invitee to the Marlins' spring training but suffered a broken finger that prevented him from competing for a roster spot. After returning from his injury in early May, Go worked his way up fr
