Heroes, Bears make changes with foreign players

Two Korean baseball clubs made changes with their foreign players Monday, with a former league home run leader switching teams midseason. The Kiwoom Heroes said they will pick up former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) home run king Matt Davidson, who was released by another KBO team, NC Dinos, over the weekend. To make room for Davidson, the Heroes released their American starting pitcher Nathan Wiles. KBO teams are each allowed to carry three non-Asian foreign players, with a maximum two pitchers. Clubs typically sign two starting pitchers and one position player from overseas, but the Heroes have elected to go with two hitters and one pitcher, as Davidson joins Keston Hiura in the lineup while Raul Alcantara will be the lone non-Asian pitcher. The Heroes previously bucked the trend at the start of last season, when they had outfielders Yasiel Puig and Ruben Cardenas, along with pitcher Kenny Rosenberg. Davidson led the KBO with 46 home runs in 131 games in 2024, his first campaign in Korea. He followed that up with 36 home runs last year in 112 games. Davidson had eight homers in 63 ga

FC Seoul to release veteran midfielder Ki Sung-yueng

FC Seoul announced Wednesday they will release veteran midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, granting their former captain his wish to play elsewhere in the top South Korean football league. "We have decided to pause our relationship with Ki Sung-yueng, our franchise star and eternal captain," FC Seoul said in a statement. "After confirming that he is no longer part of our club's plans, Ki Sung-yueng asked to be moved to another club where he can play more and have a meaningful end to his career. We decided to accept that." The K League 1 club insisted that they will not cut ties with Ki forever and said they will organize a retirement ceremony for the 36-year-old when he calls it a career. "We both agreed that the team will do its best to support his pursuit of a new career in coaching after his playing days are over," the club added. "We will reserve our utmost respect for Ki that he deserves as a legend for FC Seoul and ensure that he will be respected by many others." Ki made his professional debut with FC Seoul in 2006, and played for them until 2009 before leaving for Celtic in Scotland. It be

Landers outfielder Heredia fined for cursing at umpire

SSG Landers outfielder Guillermo Heredia was slapped with a fine of 500,000 won ($367) on Wednesday for hurling profanity at an umpire during a recent game. The Korea Baseball Organization handed down the penalty following the meeting of its disciplinary committee Tuesday. During Tuesday's game against the Kia Tigers, Heredia was called for a pitch clock violation and fell behind 0-1 in the count against James Naile. Starting this year, a batter must be in the box and alert to the pitcher with eight seconds left on the pitch clock, or the pitcher will be awarded an automatic strike. Heredia singled off Naile's third pitch of the at-bat, and then turned to home plate umpire Ham Ji-woong, apparently to voice his displeasure, before heading to first base. The umpiring crew got together for a conference and ejected Heredia from the game for swearing at Ham. The Landers later explained that Heredia wasn't happy with the automatic strike because he had intentionally taken his time to allow Naile to get ready to pitch, and that Heredia told the team that he did not swear at the umpire.

Twins acquire infielder, catcher for reliever in trade with Wiz

The LG Twins announced Wednesday they acquired infielder Cheon Seong-ho and catcher Kim Jun-tae in exchange for reliever Lim Jun-hyeong in a trade with the KT Wiz. The Twins said they reached out to the Wiz first to begin trade discussions. With the Twins seeking an extra bat and the Wiz wanting a left-hander to pitch out of their bullpen, the two Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) clubs worked out a deal, with Kim thrown into the mix. Cheon, 27, batted .209 in 31 games with seven RBIs but was batting .396 in 15 games in the Futures League, the KBO's minor circuit. The former second-round draft pick won the batting title in the Southern League of the Futures League in 2023 and showed some flashes early last season after rejoining the Wiz before fading away badly. "Cheon Seong-ho is a capable hitter who can also run the bases. He's been swinging the bat well in the minors, and he can jump right back into KBO action," the Twins said. "We expect him to take the next step as he competes for playing time with younger players on our team." With the 30-year-old Kim, the Twins added some catching

Korean reliever Go Woo-suk signs minor league deal with Detroit Tigers

A week after being released by one U.S. team, Korean pitcher Go Woo-suk has landed a deal with another. The Detroit Tigers announced Tuesday (U.S. local time) they have signed Go to a minor league contract and assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. Go, 26, was released by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A team of the Miami Marlins, last Tuesday after pitching to a 1.59 ERA over 5 2/3 innings in five appearances. He had been working his way back from a broken index finger he suffered in February as a non-roster invitee to the Marlins' spring training, an injury that cost him a chance to compete for a bullpen spot on the Opening Day roster. Go first moved to the United States in January 2024, signing a two-year contract with the San Diego Padres following seven seasons with the LG Twins in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). From 2019 to 2023, Go, known for his hard fastball and slider, led all KBO relievers with 139 saves and ranked second with 334 strikeouts. The Padres opened the 2024 regular season with a two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodge

Free agent pitcher Go Woo-suk nearing new US minor league deal

Korean free agent pitcher Go Woo-suk is nearing a new minor league deal in the United States after being released last week, sources close to the pitcher said Tuesday. According to the sources, the right-hander is close to signing a deal with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Go, 26, was released by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, last Tuesday after posting a 1.59 ERA over 5 2/3 innings in five appearances. Go signed with the San Diego Padres in January 2024, after seven seasons with the LG Twins in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). He had been among the top closers in the KBO but never played in a big league game for the Padres, who kept him in the minors before trading him to the Marlins in May 2024. Go also failed to reach the majors with the Marlins, who designated him for assignment only a few weeks after acquiring him last year. The pitcher was a non-roster invitee to the Marlins' spring training this year but suffered a broken finger that prevented him from competing for a roster spot. After returning

Host Korea among 7 countries to qualify for LPGA match-play event

The host Korea is among seven nations to have qualified for an LPGA match-play event scheduled for this fall. The LPGA announced Monday (U.S. local time) that Korea, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Sweden, Australia and China will compete in the Oct. 23-26 International Crown. New Korea Country Club in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, will host the four-day match-play competition, which was first held in 2014. The seven national teams were chosen based on the combined number of the world ranking position for their top four players, with the country having the lowest total as of Monday grabbing the top seed. This year's event will also feature a brand new Team World, to be made up of one player each from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa and Oceania. Its lineup, as well as those for the seven countries, will be determined based on the rankings on Aug. 4, following the conclusion of the AIG Women's Open. The U.S. team, led by world No. 1 Nelly Korda, took the top seed with 34 points, followed by Korea (53 points), Japan (74 points), Thailand (88 points), Sweden

Ulsan HD looking to salvage pride, secure big bonus in Club World Cup finale

Even with a knockout berth already out of reach, there is still much at stake for Ulsan HD FC in their final group stage match of the FIFA Club World Cup this week — a measure of pride in abstract terms, but up to $2 million in bonus in more practical terms. After losing their first two matches last week, Ulsan HD will close out Group F play by taking on the German side Borussia Dortmund at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, at 3 p.m. Wednesday (4 a.m. Thursday in Korea). Ulsan HD, three-time defending K League 1 champions, opened their tournament with a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa last Tuesday. Then a 4-2 loss to the Brazilian club Fluminense FC on Saturday eliminated Ulsan HD from knockout contention — reserved only for the top two teams in each of the eight groups. Ulsan HD may be tempted to conserve their energy against Dortmund, with matches in the top national tournament Korea Cup and the K League 1 coming up right around the corner. They are scheduled to arrive back home Saturday afternoon and then will play in the Korea Cup quarterfinals against fellow K Le

National skating chief named top Korean delegate for 2026 Winter Olympics

Korea's top skating official was named the country's chief delegate for the 2026 Winter Olympics on Monday. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) announced that Lee Soo-kyung, president of the Korea Skating Union (KSU), will serve as Korea's chef de mission for the 2026 Winter Games, set to run from Feb. 6 to 22 in Milano and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Men's, women's squads set for host Korea for East Asian football tournament

The host country Korea finalized their men's and women's squads for the upcoming East Asian football tournament on Monday. The Korea Football Association (KFA) unveiled the men's and women's teams, each featuring 23 players, for the July 7-16 East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship. With the tournament not part of the official FIFA international match calendar, the KFA opted for players based mostly in the domestic or other Asian leagues, with no Europe-based stars for men and eight players coming from Europe or North America for women after the KFA had earned their clubs' permission. Coached by Hong Myung-bo, the men's team has 23 based in the K League and three based in Japan's J. League. Seven of those 23 players have earned their first international call-ups, while Na Sang-ho of the Japanese club FC Machida Zelvia has made the national team for the first time since June 2023.
