Latest LPGA major winner Ryu Hae-ran cracks top 10 in world rankings

Fresh off winning her first LPGA major title, Ryu Hae-ran has cracked the top 10 in the women's golf rankings for the first time since last summer. Ryu jumped five spots to reach No. 7 in the latest rankings released Tuesday. Ryu won the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, on Sunday (local time), holding off fellow South Korean player Yoon Ina by two strokes at 13-under 275. It was Ryu's first LPGA major victory and her fourth title on the tour overall. Ryu had last been inside the top 10 on Aug. 11, 2025. The 25-year-old has previously ranked as high as fifth. Ryu is one of three South Korean players in the top 10. Kim Hyo-joo stayed at No. 3 and Kim Sei-young remained at No. 10. Yoon soared 22 spots to reach her career-high No. 17. The LPGA sophomore began the year at No. 67.

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo ends subpar June with hitless game

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has wrapped up a subpar month of June with his fourth consecutive hitless game. Lee went 0-for-4 in a 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix on Monday (local time). It brought his batting average down to .240, his lowest mark since the second game of the season on March 29. Lee bounced into a 3-6-3 double play in the top of the second inning and then flied out in his next three trips to the plate. The second-year South Korean outfielder has not recorded a hit since hitting a triple last Thursday. His four-game hitless drought matches his career high: Lee also went four games, from June 18 to June 22 this year, without a hit. Lee batted just .143 in June with an on-base percentage of .277 and a slugging percentage of .274. For the season, he has a .240/.311/.393 line in 82 games. After a scorching start to his second season in the majors, Lee had a .319/.375/.526 line at the end of April. But he struggled to a .231/.270/.343 line in May before slumping even more in June. Lee still leads the Giants with 17 doubles and six triple

Rookie slugger, veteran outfielder highlight KBO All-Star Game reserves

KT Wiz rookie slugger Ahn Hyun-min and LG Twins outfielder Kim Hyun-soo were among the 26 reserves announced Monday for the annual Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star Game. Each summer, representatives from the 10 KBO clubs are divided into the "Nanum" and "Dream" All-Star teams for an exhibition game. Players from the Hanwha Eagles, the LG Twins, the Kia Tigers, the NC Dinos and the Kiwoom Heroes will make up the Nanum squad. Those from the Samsung Lions, the Lotte Giants, the SSG Landers, the KT Wiz and the Doosan Bears will play for the Dream side. This year's All-Star Game will be July 12 at the Eagles' brand new home stadium, Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, some 140 kilometers south of Seoul. The 12 starters for each side, selected by fans and fellow players, were revealed last Monday in the following positions and roles: starting pitcher, middle reliever, closer, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, three outfield positions and designated hitter (DH). Lee Bum-ho, manager of the defending champions Tigers, will be in charge of the Nanum

Eagles set to face KBO bottom feeders in bid to extend lead at top

The Hanwha Eagles hold a one-game lead over the LG Twins atop the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) standings, despite winning just two of their past five games. The Eagles will try to stretch their slim lead this week when they take on two of the league's bottom feeders. The Eagles, with a 45-32-1 (wins-losses-ties) record, will host the eighth-place NC Dinos (35-37-4) for three games starting Tuesday in Daejeon, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul. The Eagles have gone 6-3-0 against the Dinos so far in 2025. Then the Eagles will visit Seoul to face the last-place Kiwoom Heroes (25-54-3) from Friday to Sunday at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. The Eagles have won six of their seven meetings against the Heroes in 2025. Both the Dinos and the Heroes are playing some solid baseball lately, though. The Dinos had the third-best record in June at 12-10-1 to stay within striking distance of a postseason spot. The Heroes are coming off their first three-game sweep of this season after beating the Samsung Lions in three straight games at Gocheok by a combined score of 24-11. Heroes captain Song Sung-m

Team victory serves as confidence boost for Korean LPGA sophomores

Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi both joined the LPGA Tour in 2024, having bagged six wins and five wins, respectively, on the Korean circuit. Despite their winning credentials in KLPGA, breaking through on the U.S. tour proved to be difficult. Their long-awaited win finally came at a team event, the Dow Championship in Midland, Michigan, on Sunday (local time), where Im and Lee defeated Megan Khang and Lexi Thompson of the United States in a playoff. It was Im's 39th start and Lee's 41st start on the LPGA Tour. "I can't believe it," Lee said at a press conference. "Last year, we were rookies, and LPGA is very tough and different than KLPGA. Now we are winners, so I'm so happy." The two teams finished the regulation tied at 20-under 260. Khang and Thompson finished their round earlier with Thompson making birdie on the par-3 18th in the fourball format -- with players each hitting their own ball and the better score of the two becoming the team's score on each hole. Im and Lee, playing in the final group, both stood over birdie putts on the 18th green that would have sealed their win in regulatio

Im Jin-hee, Lee So-mi team up for 1st LPGA title

Korean LPGA sophomores Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi have teamed up for their maiden U.S. titles. Im and Lee won the Dow Championship at the par-70 Midland Country Club in Midland, Michigan, on Sunday (local time), after beating the American team of Megan Khang and Lexi Thompson in a playoff. At the team competition featuring two golfers per side, both teams finished 72 holes at 20-under 260. Im and Lee shot an eight-under 62 in their bogey-free final round with eight birdies, with both missing birdie attempts on the par-3 18th. Khang and Thompson put up a 60 in the final round, with Thompson draining a birdie putt on the finishing hole. The first and the third rounds had the alternate shot, or foursomes, format, in which teammates took turns hitting the same ball. The second and the final rounds were played in the fourball format, where players each hit their own ball and the better score of the two became the team's score on each hole. The playoff, which began at the 18th, was back to foursomes. Im drained a birdie putt set up by Lee's tee shot. Khang had a shorter birdie attempt but pulled

Tigers ace Oller credits humility for success in 1st KBO season

About three months into his Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season, Kia Tigers right-hander Adam Oller finds himself among the league leaders in wins, ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched and quality starts. Few would bat an eye if Oller, with an 8-3 record, a 3.03 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 95 innings across 16 starts, strutted around feeling great about himself. But the 30-year-old American pitcher wants to stay humble, the way he has been since the start of his KBO career, because he knows that baseball is, well, a humbling game. "I like to stay humble because you get a little egotistical and that's usually when things backfire on you," Oller told Yonhap News Agency in an interview at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on Thursday, a day after he held the Kiwoom Heroes to two runs on five hits in six frames in a 6-3 victory. "I like to stay humble just because these guys are good. I've played against some really good veteran Korean players and really good young Korean players that are impressive." Oller, who made 36 appearances in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2022 to 2024, said he didn't wan

S. Korea reaches deals for hospitality house, catering centers in Milan during Winter Olympics

The national Olympic committee announced Friday it has reached deals to set up a hospitality house and catering centers for its athletes during the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) said its Korea House during the Feb. 6-22 Winter Games will be set up inside Villa Necchi Campiglio, a historic house museum in Milan owned by the nonprofit Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), or the National Trust of Italy. The KSOC first operated Korea House during the 2004 Athens Olympics, and it mostly functioned as an office for KSOC staff providing support for athletes and hosted press conferences for South Korean medalists in the early days. For the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, the KSOC set up the largest-ever Korea House and turned it into a cultural complex, with 15 private and public institutions offering a wide range of exhibitions, hands-on experience events and performances to promote Korean culture. KSOC President Ryu Seung-min traveled to Milan this week to sign the deal with David Usai, director general of the FAI. The two also discussed ways to ensure a succes

Olympic bobsleigh medalist Won Yun-jong among 11 candidates for IOC Athletes' Commission election

Korean Olympic bobsleigh medalist Won Yun-jong will be among 11 candidates running for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes' Commission election next year. The IOC on Friday unveiled the final list of candidates for the election, which will take place during the Feb. 6-22 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Approved Thursday by the IOC Executive Board, the list features eight men and three women from five different sports and 11 countries. Won, who piloted South Korea to the silver medal in the men's four-man bobsleigh at the 2018 Winter Olympics, was chosen as the South Korean candidate for the election, ahead of figure skater Cha Jun-hwan, in February. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) then submitted Won's application to the IOC in March, and Won made the cut. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes, from two different sports, will replace outgoing Emma Terho and Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen, whose eight-year terms will end next year. According to the IOC, the election will begin on Jan. 30, when the athletes' villages will off

On temporary KBO deal, Heroes pitcher Wells trying to stay present

Earlier in June, Australian pitcher Lachlan Wells pounced on an opportunity to pitch in Korea for the first time, thinking it would be "a pretty cool experience," even though he only signed a temporary deal. Wells' future with the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) remains uncertain, beyond the six weeks he's supposed to be around for as an injury replacement for fellow left-hander Kenny Rosenberg. And Wells, 28, is determined to stay in the present, no matter how his KBO stint plays out. In 2024, the KBO began allowing teams to sign new foreign players on short-term contracts to fill in for those sidelined for at least six weeks. Teams have made the use of this rule with a varying degree of success, none more successful than the Hanwha Eagles. They hit a jackpot last summer with right-hander Ryan Weiss, who pitched so well in place of Ricardo Sanchez that the Eagles ended up cutting Sanchez and converted Weiss' initial deal into a full contract. Weiss then returned for his second season here in 2025. Wells may just be given an opportunity to grab a rotation spot for

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo hits 6th triple of season, tied for 2nd in National League

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has pulled into a tie for second place in the National League (NL) with his sixth triple of the season. The three-bagger was Lee's only hit in four at-bats in the Giants' 12-5 loss to the Miami Marlins at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Thursday (local time). Batting fifth, Lee led off the bottom of the fourth inning by hitting a line drive toward right fielder Jesus Sanchez, who failed to make a diving grab or at least keep the ball in front of him. As the ball rolled toward the warning track, Lee sped around the bases for a stand-up triple. With six triples, Lee is leading the Giants and is tied with Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers for second in the NL, three behind Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lee then came home on a single by Willy Adames that cut the Marlins' lead to 5-3. The Giants scored two more runs that same inning to tie the game at 5-5 before the Marlins pulled away with three runs in the fifth and four more in the eighth. Lee also leads the Giants with 17 doubles and ranks second on the team with 74 hits and 46
