Election body slammed for sexist cartoon

By Ko Dong-hwanThe National Election Commission (NEC) came under fire for a promotional cartoon many found derogatory to women. In the cartoon intended to encourage absentee voting ahead of the June 4 local elections, a young woman is seen being reluctant to cast her ballot early because she just had cosmetic surgery on her eyes to prepare for a beauty pageant. This didn’t go to well with the Korean Women’s Associated United (KWAU).``Attending a beauty pageant is not an experience that is commonly shared by female voters; the cartoon had no reason to be based on a character like that. At a time when there are worrying level misogyny on the Internet, we fear that cartons like these will fuel the hate and disrespect for women by portraying them as clueless about civic responsibility,’’ the KWAU said in a statement.``The cartoon portrays a man who is reluctant to cast his ballots because he has to go to work. On the other hand, the problem for the woman is that she got her eyes done. This is a cartoon based on a discriminatory idea on gender.’’After th

Chinese star blasted for kneeling in front of Kim Soo-hyun

By Ko Dong-hwan Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun is as popular as air in China, where everything related to him seems to become an episode of ``Overreaction Theater.’’At the Baeksang Art Awards held at Kyung Hee University in Seoul on Tuesday, Kim was named as best new actor of the year for his role in the popular SBS drama ``Man from the Star.’’Chinese singer Tao Ching Ying was picked as the presenter of the award and she over-did things a little bit by kneeling in front of him before handing him the flowers and trophy. The image didn’t go well to Chinese fans watching from home where Tao was lashed on the Internet for being ``unprofessional’’ and a ``national disgrace.’’ While the Chinese love Kim, they apparently didn’t want one of their own popular entertainers kneeling in front of him.

Dermatologist to pay W76 million after youth loses thumb

By Ko Dong-hwan A dermatologist who unintentionally caused a youth’s thumb to be amputated, must pay his family 76 million won restitution, a court has ruled. The high school student visited the dermatologist’s clinic in 2012 to have a wart on his thumb removed. The doctor gave a local anesthetic, but the youth began to feel excruciating pain. After 20 minutes, he was transferred to a general hospital emergency ward. By the time he reached the hospital, his thumb had turned white, a sign that its organic tissue had died. Despite an injection to enhance the blood flow, a surgeon had to amputate the thumb 10 days later. Seoul Central District Court announced Wednesday that it had ruled in favor of plaintiffs ― the boy and his family. The court found that the dermatologist had used too much anesthetic, causing the thumb tissue to rot. The dermatologist also had not warned the boy that this could happen.

Political differences a no-no for blind dates

By Ko Dong-hwan The biggest turn-off for single men and women is finding that their blind dates’ political interests do not match their own, a survey shows.Six out of 10 singles said they would not risk dating someone with differing political views. With the June 4 local election close, matchmaking company Duo quizzed 711 single men and women to analyze how political elements affected their blind dates. In the result released Tuesday, 407 respondents said they would not waste time meeting dates with opposing political views.About 50 percent said couples with different political interests would fight constantly.Twenty percent said they would never compromise their political views even with their date.Fifteen percent agreed that differing political interests would mean an “unmanageable psychological difference.”The views reinforce another result from the survey, with most respondents saying that politics was their number one topic to avoid on blind dates. On a more positive note, the most popular topics/requirements for successful blind dates were “travel&rdq

KBS play-by-play man blasted for slack football coverage

Cho Woo-joong, left, and Lee Young-pyo posed as main football play-by-play man and color comentator, respectively, for broadcaster KBS.By Ko Dong-hwan Cho Woo-joong had a rough debut as KBS television’s football play-by-play man. Calling a friendly game between Luxembourg and Belgium, a mighty team that Korea will face in the World Cup group stages next month, Cho showed a shaky partnership with color commentator Lee Young-pyo, a former Korea international. The conversations lacked flow and were devoid of insight.Lee is a national hero as one of the best defenders to play for Korea. The leash is much shorter for Cho, with angry commentators flocking to online message boards demanding KBS find someone else before the Brazil World Cup starts in June. With the Cho-Lee partnership getting a harsh reception, the pressure increases on Kim Sung-joo, Ahn Jung-hwan and Song Jong-gook, who will call the World Cup matches on MBC.Kim is a veteran play-by-play man, while Ahn and Song were part of the Korean World Cup team that made a surprising semi-final run in 2002.SBS television

Voluptuous Dodgers fan has TV viewers heated

By Ko Dong-hwan While Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin threw game-winning pitches against the Cincinnati Reds at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, viewers were constantly drawn to something else on the screen.A voluptuous young woman in a blue sleeveless shirt and white miniskirt was seated right behind home plate. She probably didn’t go to the ballpark expecting to become an Internet viral hit on the other side of the Pacific.Internet users in Korea quickly spread the pictures of the “Dodgers girl” and online message boards were overflowing with comments. Some even claimed she was the biggest reason they were tuning into the game.

Porn file-sharers evade watchdog through torrenting

By Ko Dong-hwanGovernment authorities admit they are fighting a losing battle to eliminate porn, pirated movies and other illegal content shared through "torrenting."Torrenting refers to the transfer of video and audio content downloaded as "torrent" files. Unlike previous file-sharing sites such as Napster, there is no central information hub. This decentralized system is popular among Internet users because it is harder for authorities to track down the offenders. Many of these services now operate through secretive, ``member-only platforms,’’ accessible only to a closed circle of people.Police recently arrested two people behind a members-only torrenting service operating from a server in Vietnam. The website has provided more than 54 terabytes of sex videos and other adult content to its 3,400 members. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced last year that it would crack down on torrenting sites, but this appeared to have led to the increase in member-only sites, ministry officials said.Search-and-destroy missions continue to be difficult, and anti-piracy

Domestic chores saddle young housewives

By Ko Dong-hwan                         Housewives in their 20s spend more than 10 hours every day doing domestic chores and attending to their children, according to a survey by azoomma.com, an online community of married women. In comparison, housewives in their 30s spent an average of 8.1 hours on the same activities, those in their 40s spent seven hours and those 50 or older spent six hours. Apparently, as children get older, the less attention they demand.Nearly 80 percent of the 500 women questioned for the survey said they spent most time on things related to raising and educating their children.About half of the respondents said cooking was a priority, while 26.4 percent thought home decoration was important.Nearly 50 percent said also spent time studying ways to reinvest household income for more profit.

Police release montages of ferry owner and son

By Ko Dong-hwan The National Police Agency on Monday released the montages of the elusive Yoo Byung-eun and his  son Yoo Dae-kyun. The father-and-son duo headed the murky company that operated the doomed Sewol ferry, which sank off Jindo last month, leaving more than 300 people dead.  Police have been struggling to find the two. And it is hard to imagine that the montages, which convey comically terrible photo-shop skills, will be much help. The faces of the Yoos wearing sunglasses, mustaches and skullcaps look as if they were stolen from the original Super Mario sketch.Investigators tried but failed to nab the duo at Geumsusan, the compound of the Salvation Sect religious cult in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province. The elder Yoo has been a senior member of the cult, which is believed to be protecting his family.Police are offering big rewards for the Yoos ― 5 million won (about $4,900) for the Byung-eun and 1 million won for Dae-kyun.
