Injured defender recovering quickly, available in group stage

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — On the heels of their opening victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, South Korea received some encouraging news on the injury front on Friday. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, dealing with an ankle injury that some feared could keep him out of the group stage, will be available as early as next Thursday for South Korea's second Group A match against Mexico. Kim picked up the injury during a training session Tuesday at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and a national team official told reporters the next day that the left-footed center back may miss the entire group stage -- which ends on June 24 for South Korea. However, Song Jun-seob, the senior team doctor, said Friday that Kim's injury wasn't serious as once feared. "The initial MRI confirmed a ligament tear but the picture wasn't clear enough for us to determine the exact degree," Song said. "We checked his swelling 24 hours later and determined that it was an average sprain. So we told the coaching staff that he should be able to play at the World Cup." Kim is one of just two left-footed center backs on the

Executive of S. Korea's national swimming body arrested over alleged bribery

Prosecutors have formally arrested a board member of South Korea's national swimming organization on charges of receiving bribes in exchange for peddling influence over selecting the country's national team members, officials said Tuesday. The Seoul Central District Court issued a warrant on Monday to arrest the suspect, identified only by his surname Chung, noting there are considerable reasons to believe he committed the crimes and could possibly destroy evidence.Chung is accused of receiving some hundreds of millions of won from swimming coaches for years in exchange for favors in the process of selecting national athletes. Most of the kickbacks given to Chung are suspected to have come from a private swimming club run by another board member of the Korea Swimming Federation (KSF), according to prosecutors. The 56-year-old unlawfully helped athletes who practiced at the club to join the national team, prosecutors said. The arrest came a few days after prosecutors raided the headquarters of the organization in eastern Seoul and some 20 other related organizations over suspicions they m

S. Korean slugger Lee Dae-ho focused only on winning big league job

Having signed a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners, South Korean slugger Lee Dae-ho has an option to return to Asia -- where he built an All-Star career -- if his U.S. stint doesn't pan out.The 33-year-old first baseman/designated hitter said Monday, however, he is only focused on winning a big league job."I am only thinking about making the 25-man roster," Lee said after his practice here in Arizona, where the Mariners will have their first full workout Thursday. "I don't want to have any regret."Lee signed a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners earlier this month, with an invitation to spring training. He will make US$4 million if he makes the big league club but will be on a minor-league pay scale otherwise.Lee also has an opt-out clause, which would allow him to declare free agency at the end of spring training instead of accepting a minor league assignment. He left a lucrative offer to return to his former NPB club, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, for a third season, after winning two consecutive Japan Series titles with them. Lee also has an option to be back in the

Korean teams face tough Asian challenge

By John DuerdenThe K-League season is not quite upon us but the 2016 Asian Champions League starts this Tuesday. South Korean teams have historically enjoyed success in this most prestigious club competition, but this year looks to be tougher than ever. The tallest task this week falls at the feet of the Pohang Steelers. The North Gyeongsang Province team finished third last season and has a new coach in Choi Jin-cheul, who replaces 2002 World Cup teammate Hwang Sun-hong.Choi's first game was the Champions League qualification playoff two weeks ago, a 3-0 win over Hanoi T&T.If that was a comfortable win, the next will be anything but, on the turf of defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande. The Chinese club has not only won two of the last three Asian titles, but took the last five domestic crowns as well.Choi is light on coaching experience and still had a few years of his playing career left when opposite number Luiz Felipe Scolari led Brazil to the 2002 World Cup. Since winning the 2015 Asian Champions League, Guangzhou has paid more than $50 million to Atletico Madrid for Colo
