    Injured defender recovering quickly, available in group stage

    ZAPOPAN, Mexico — On the heels of their opening victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, South Korea received some encouraging news on the injury front on Friday. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, dealing with an ankle injury that some feared could keep him out of the group stage, will be available as early as next Thursday for South Korea's second Group A match against Mexico. Kim picked up the injury during a training session Tuesday at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and a national team official told reporters the next day that the left-footed center back may miss the entire group stage -- which ends on June 24 for South Korea. However, Song Jun-seob, the senior team doctor, said Friday that Kim's injury wasn't serious as once feared. "The initial MRI confirmed a ligament tear but the picture wasn't clear enough for us to determine the exact degree," Song said. "We checked his swelling 24 hours later and determined that it was an average sprain. So we told the coaching staff that he should be able to play at the World Cup." Son won silver. /Yonhap Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae has claimed a silver medal at the Grand Prix in Russia, showing promise for a podium finish at the upcoming Olympics.Son earned a combined 72.964 points in the individual all-around event at the Grand Prix 2016 in Moscow on Saturday (local time).Russia's Aleksandra Soldatova won gold with 74.066 points. The bronze went to Arina Averina of Russia, who scored 72.682 points.By apparatus, Son earned 18.366 points in clubs, 18.166 points in ribbon, 18.066 points in hoop and 18.366 points in ball. She has qualified for the individual finals for all four apparatus slated for Sunday.This is the first time Son has made the podium at the Grand Prix in Moscow, a competition she's participated in every year since 2011.She finished in 19th place at the 2011 Grand Prix and climbed every year to 6th place in 2014. Skeleton racer Yun Sung-binBy Kwon Ji-youn Yun Sung-bin wrote history in the skeleton Friday, winning Korea’s first-ever silver medal at the world championships.Yun finished four runs in 3 minutes 29.97 seconds at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Championships in Igls, Austria, to finish in second place with Russian Alexander Tretiakov. The gold went to Latvian Martins Dukurs.“I want to thank my coaches and teammates who have guided and supported me since I was named to the national team,” Yun said. “It has scared me at times to think that people may think that the medals I win are my achievements alone when they are actually the achievements of all of the team and our coaches. I did make a few mistakes, but overall, I’m pleased with the results.”Yun is the first Asian to win a medal at the skeleton world championships. Gov't to reward 6.9 billion won to Rio medalists

By Baek Byung-yeulThe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) is gearing up its support for athletes who will compete at this year’s Rio Olympics, including the highest-ever monetary incentive for medalists.Korean gold medalists will receive 60 million won ($48,480), silver medalists 30 million won and bronze winners 1.8 million won, the ministry said Friday.It will provide a total of 27.2 billion won ($22 million) for the Korean delegation to the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.The prize money, which will be provided by a national subsidies program, accounts for about 6.9 billion won -- 3.67 billion won for the Olympics and 3.18 billion won for the Paralympics. This is up 122 percent from the amount provided to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics athletes. South Korea announced Friday it will give a record amount of prize money to medalists at the Summer Olympic Games this year. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism said it will give a 6.9 billion won bonus to medal winners at the 2016 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The ministry said 3.66 billion won will be given to medalists in the Olympic Games, while 3.18 billion won will be rewarded to medal collectors in the Paralympic Games. Four years ago in London, where South Korea had its best Olympic finish at fifth and 12th in the Paralympics, the government gave 5.6 billion won to medalists and their coaches.Gold medalists in Rio will each receive 60 million won. A silver medalist can get 30 million won and a bronze medalist will be given 18 million won. Choo Shin-soo's father convicted of fraud

The father of Texas Rangers' outfielder Choo Shin-soo received a three-year jail term Thursday for not paying back 500 million won (US$407,400) that he borrowed. The Jinju Branch of the Changwon District Court suspended the sentence for the 65-year-old for five years and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of community service.His accomplice, identified only by his surname Cho, was jailed after receiving a four-year prison term. Presidents Cup in S. Korea generates record amount for charities

The PGA Tour announced Thursday the 2015 Presidents Cup held in South Korea generated a record amount of dollars for charitable funds.The biennial match play competition featuring 24 golfers -- a dozen from the United States and a dozen more from the rest of the world excluding Europe -- raised US$6.12 million that will be donated to charities soon, topping the previous record of $5.01 million at the 2013 competition.The 2015 Presidents Cup was held last October at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon, a metropolitan city west of Seoul, the first time the event was held in Asia.There was no prize money at stake, but the 33 players, captains and captain's assistants will allocate an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of their choice.
