Injured defender recovering quickly, available in group stage

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — On the heels of their opening victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, South Korea received some encouraging news on the injury front on Friday. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, dealing with an ankle injury that some feared could keep him out of the group stage, will be available as early as next Thursday for South Korea's second Group A match against Mexico. Kim picked up the injury during a training session Tuesday at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and a national team official told reporters the next day that the left-footed center back may miss the entire group stage -- which ends on June 24 for South Korea. However, Song Jun-seob, the senior team doctor, said Friday that Kim's injury wasn't serious as once feared. "The initial MRI confirmed a ligament tear but the picture wasn't clear enough for us to determine the exact degree," Song said. "We checked his swelling 24 hours later and determined that it was an average sprain. So we told the coaching staff that he should be able to play at the World Cup." Kim is one of just two left-footed center backs on the

Let your right hip move higher than your left during the backswing

By Kim Jeong-kyooYour hips should not turn on a level plane. You need to make sure that your right hip moves higher than your left on the backswing. The conventional theory dictates you need to turn your hips level. But it is a myth that you need to rotate your hips flat. If you let your hips turn level on the backswing, you will have difficulties keeping your head steady. Also, you cannot stay centered throughout your swing unless your hips work properly.Allowing your hips to turn level, you cannot swing your club naturally and freely. You have difficulty swinging your club on plane and on the correct path.Your hips stay tilted at the address the way your shoulders are sitting. You need to let your right shoulder and hip move upwards as you swing your club backwards. Then, all the good moves necessary to complete your backswing correctly will take care of themselves. Especially, your left shoulder will move correctly--slightly downward if you turn your right hip upward. Also your right shoulder will correctly turn behind your head.To turn your right hip upward, you must move your hi

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

A Matter of ControlControl of distance and direction are the two most important factors on every putt, and the simple teaching aid shown here can help you learn to release the clubhead. All you need are two boards and an extra club.Line up the boards to point at your target. In the photos below, I'm hitting a 5-foot putt with no break, so the boards are aimed directly at the hole. Leave just enough room between them for your putter head (have about a quarter-inch clearance on each side). Then place the shaft of your extra club across the runners, allowing for just enough backswing to execute the putt. Many golfers use backswings that are too long, giving them only two options, neither of which is good. The first is to make an accelerating stroke back to the ball that sends the ball too far past the cup. The other is to decelerate in the impact area. This causes the putter head to slow down so much that the putt stops well short of the hole. The proper release for a putting stroke is demonstrated in the picture on the right. Here, aided by the correct length of backstroke, I have allowe

After strong rookie year, Pirates' Kang Jung-ho says he has more to show

By most accounts, South Korean infielder Kang Jung-ho had a successful rookie year with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015. The first position player to jump from the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to Major League Baseball (MLB), Kang batted .287/.355/.461 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs, en route to finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. Had it not been for a season-ending leg injury in September, Kang, the NL Rookie of the Month for July, surely would have put up better numbers. As the Pirates held their first full workout of spring training here in Florida on Tuesday, Kang said he isn't about to slow down. "I don't think my last season was successful," Kang said. "I think I just did okay. I've got a lot more to show. I will try to be better this year than the last."Asked to specify what aspects of his game he wants to improve, Kang said, "Everything." "Be it my defense, hitting, batting average, RBIs or home runs -- even if people say I had a good season -- I have to do better than that," Kang added. "Last year, everything was new, and I didn't prepare (fo

The Japanese government said Tuesday it will allow the entry of the North Korean women's football team for Olympic qualifying matches as "an exception" to Tokyo's new sanctions following Pyongyang's recent nuclear test and rocket launch."In the international sports community, it is a widespread view that athletes should not be discriminated against by their nationality. Taking this into account, we exceptionally decided to accept special circumstances," Japan's top government spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, said at a press conference. The North Korean national team's trip to Osaka via Beijing comes after Japan decided last week on a fresh round of sanctions on North Korea for conducting a fourth nuclear test on Jan. 6 and launching a long-range rocket on Feb. 7 in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions. The sanctions include a ban on North Korean ships and nationals entering Japan. The football team is hoping to enter Japan by Thursday to play in the final Asian qualifying round for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games this summer, Japan's Kyodo News reported, quoting a source at the Japa
