Injured defender recovering quickly, available in group stage

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — On the heels of their opening victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, South Korea received some encouraging news on the injury front Friday. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, dealing with an ankle injury that some feared could keep him out of the group stage, will be available as early as next Thursday for South Korea's second Group A match against Mexico. Kim picked up the injury during a training session Tuesday at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and a national team official told reporters the next day that the left-footed center back may miss the entire group stage -- which ends on June 24 for South Korea. However, Song Jun-seob, the senior team doctor, said Friday that Kim's injury wasn't serious as once feared. "The initial MRI confirmed a ligament tear but the picture wasn't clear enough for us to determine the exact degree," Song said. "We checked his swelling 24 hours later and determined that it was an average sprain. So we told the coaching staff that he should be able to play at the World Cup." Four quick tips to hit your ball farther, straighter

By Kim Jeong-kyooTo play better golf, you need to learn to hit your driver longer in the middle of the fairway. Longer drives help you hit your approach shots better, giving you more chances for birdies and eagles. Four quick and easy tips here will help you hit your ball farther and straighter. 1. Steady your head You can produce solid strikes with ease if you keep your head steady during the swing. Solid contact usually brings about long-distance shots. Typically, Tour players don’t allow their head to move more than one inch as they swing. Keeping your head steady, you can see your ball better. This makes it easier to hit your ball solidly. To keep your head steady, you’d better stretch your right side, from your ankle to your armpit on the backswing. If you do this properly, your left shoulder, hip and knee will form nearly a straight line at the top. Your spine will not stay tilted much to the right.Importantly, you need to turn your left shoulder downward as you extend your right side. That way you can turn your shoulders 90 degrees to your spine angle. You

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

The boards of education I tell all my students that spin is the enemy of roll, so they should chip the ball rather than pitch it, and use the least-lofted club they can, since loft adds spin. Crisp contact should be your No. 1 priority when you chip the ball, so it rolls end-over-end with no side spin. Mark your ball with an arrow so you can better see the roll.To roll it correctly, you must hit the ball with a descending blow, pinching the back of the ball. Setting up two boards as shown here will help you get the feel of the angles needed for accurate chipping.Place one board along your toe line, parallel to your intended line of flight. Place the other board perpendicular to the first, about 6 inches behind your back foot.Take your standard chipping stance, making sure that you do the following: 1. Place your feet about 6 inches apart (measured between the inside of your shoes).2. Position the ball off your back foot.3. Angle the shaft toward your front shoulder.4. Put 80 percent of your weight on your front foot and leave it there.5. Choice of club depends on how m

'Chinese Super League is the talk of East Asia'

By John DuerdenWith Chinese, Japanese and South Korean teams fighting it out in the 2016 Asian Champions League and with the respective domestic leagues about to begin another season, it is a perfect time to take a look at the East Asian situation and the Chinese Super League, the J-League and the K-League Classic.Fans have long argued as to which league is best and it is a debate that has become more complex of late. For a long time, Japan and Korea had the ascendancy. The J-League started in 1993, inspired by the K-League that was ten years older. With major investment and some big name stars, the Land of the Rising Sun soon established itself as a rival and then, in many ways became the best in Asia. With healthier attendances and better and more effective relations with local communities, Japan was the model for others to follow. Good football, good youth development and well-organized; there is much to admire. Most K-League clubs neglected their local communities in comparison and most did not have the financial power of those in Japan but still there was some comfort in the fact t
