Injured defender recovering quickly, available in group stage

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — On the heels of their opening victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, South Korea received some encouraging news on the injury front Friday. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, dealing with an ankle injury that some feared could keep him out of the group stage, will be available as early as next Thursday for South Korea's second Group A match against Mexico. Kim picked up the injury during a training session Tuesday at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and a national team official told reporters the next day that the left-footed center back may miss the entire group stage -- which ends on June 24 for South Korea. However, Song Jun-seob, the senior team doctor, said Friday that Kim's injury wasn't serious as once feared. "The initial MRI confirmed a ligament tear but the picture wasn't clear enough for us to determine the exact degree," Song said. "We checked his swelling 24 hours later and determined that it was an average sprain. So we told the coaching staff that he should be able to play at the World Cup." Kim is one of just two left-footed center backs on the tea

K-League clubs gear up for new season

By John DuerdenThe K-League Classic is back with the 2016 season kicking-off on Saturday. It has not been the most exciting of off-seasons but there is still plenty to look forward to in this 12-team nine month competition. While Chinese clubs have been spending left, right and center on all kinds of famous football stars to make all kinds of headlines, Korea had to be content with some lower key activity. There was one exception to this, Jeonbuk Motors. The team from Jeonju has won the last two titles and is going for the hat-trick and has been busy strengthening and deepening its roster in order to challenge at home and also in the Asian Champions League.Choi Kang-hee has signed Kim Bo-kyung to shore up the midfield from an attacking point of view and the former English Premier League star offers more options. Striker Kim Shin-wook has been a star with Ulsan and was expected, when he left the Tigers, to head to Europe. A move to Scottish giant Celtic fell through after the U.K. government tightened visa requirements for players coming from outside the European Union. Add Korean inter

The match ended in a 1-1 draw. / YonhapBy John DuerdenIt was a case of what might have been for South Korea's women as they tied Japan 1-1 in Asian qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics on Wednesday in Osaka. It was a very good result for the female Taeguk Warriors but had Ji So-yun not missed a second half penalty, very good could have become great. After the same scoreline against North Korea two days previously, it leaves South Korea still in with a chance of qualifying for the tournament in Brazil later this year. It won't be easy. Six teams are in the final round and after they all play each other, just the top two are successful.Japan, world champion in 2011 and runner-up last year and silver medalist at the 2012 Olympics, was the favorite especially on home soil but has now collected one point from two games.
