What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Heroes infielder Song Sung-mun to ask to be posted for MLB teams

Kiwoom Heroes infielder Song Sung-mun said Sunday he will ask his Korean club to post him for Major League Baseball (MLB) teams after the season, hoping for a chance to take his talent to the top league. "I will ask to be posted after the season, and we'll see how things play out," Song told reporters before the Heroes hosted the KT Wiz at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. Song will be eligible to be posted for any interested MLB team after completing his seventh full season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in 2025. Once Song is posted, MLB teams will have 30 days in which to negotiate a deal with the player. If Song lands a deal, the Heroes will receive a portion of that contract in compensation. The 29-year-old made his KBO debut with the Heroes in 2015 but didn't become an everyday player until 2019, only to spend all of 2020 and the first part of 2021 fulfilling his military service duty. Song had his breakout campaign last year, when he established career highs across the board with a .340/.409/.518 line, 19 home runs, 21 steals and 104 RBIs. He overcame a slow start to this year and

Korean players trade hits, steals as Rays beat Giants for 2nd straight game

Kim Ha-seong and the Tampa Bay Rays got the upper hand on his countryman Lee Jung-hoo and the San Francisco Giants for their second straight road victory. Kim batted 1-for-3 with a steal as the Rays defeated the Giants 2-1 at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday (local time). Lee went 2-for-4 with a steal of his own in the losing cause. This was the second game of a three-game series between the two clubs. They play in opposite leagues and will not meet again after the finale set for Sunday at Oracle Park. Batting sixth and playing shortstop, Kim lined out to left field in the top of the second and then struck out looking in the top of the fifth. He flied out to right in the top of the seventh before getting his only hit of the game with a single in the ninth. Kim then swiped second base for his sixth steal of the campaign, though he was thrown out at third as part of a double play. Lee, who batted fifth and played center field, grounded out in the second and then singled to right field in the fourth. After flying out in the bottom of the sixth, Lee led off the ninth with a single, as t

LAFC coach, teammates gush over Son Heung-min following victory

Son Heung-min has only played a match and a half for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) since joining them less than two weeks ago, but the Korean superstar has already made a strong impression on his coaching staff and teammates. After making his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut as a second-half sub against Chicago FC on Aug. 9, Son got his first start for LAFC against New England Revolution in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Saturday (local time). The forward earned his first MLS assist by setting up Mathieu Choiniere's stoppage-time goal en route to a 2-0 LAFC victory. At the postmatch press conference, LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo reserved high praise for Son for "his quality and his intelligence out on the field." "He's one of the few players who has that intelligence and experience, and has the technical and physical capabilities to combine it all, and that's what you see," Cherundolo said. "The 120 minutes we've seen of Sonny with LAFC have been excellent, and it's definitely a great foundation now to build and to get better. And the more he plays, the better the teammates will ge

Son Heung-min collects assist in 1st LAFC start

Son Heung-min picked up an assist in his first start for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in an away match while showing flashes of brilliance that once made him one of the biggest offensive threats in the Premier League. Son set up Mathieu Choiniere's stoppage-time goal in LAFC's 2-0 win over New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Saturday (local time). Son signed with LAFC on Aug. 6, ending his 10-year run with Tottenham Hotspur, and made his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut as a second-half substitute against Chicago Fire FC three days later. Son made an immediate impact then, drawing a penalty that led to LAFC's equalizer in a 1-1 draw. Making his first MLS start against New England, Son had his first chance in the 27th minute, when goalkeeper Matt Turner's clearing attempt following a David Martinez corner ended at the Korean star's feet. Son faked out Luca Langoni before taking a left-footed shot from the center of the box but rolled the ball wide right of the target. It was one of only two shot attempts for LAFC in the first half. They did not hav

KBO's top rookie out with calf injury

KT Wiz outfielder Ahn Hyun-min, the leading contender for the top rookie prize in South Korean baseball this year, has been sidelined with a calf injury. The Wiz announced Saturday that Ahn has been diagnosed with a small blood clot in both calves, along with muscle tightness. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club said Ahn will rest for two to three days before returning to practice. Ahn went down during Friday's game against the Kiwoom Heroes at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. While trying to make a play in right field, Ahn lost his balance and fell. He stayed down in obvious pain before getting taken off the field in an ambulance. The 21-year-old has been the biggest breakout star in the KBO this year. He leads the league with a .347 batting average and a .455 on-base percentage, and sits second with a .602 slugging percentage. He leads all rookies with 18 home runs and 65 RBIs despite playing in only 83 games. He is expected to run away with the Rookie of the Year award and also get some MVP consideration. He was voted the KBO's Player of the Month for July, when he posted a .441/.551/

Son Heung-min’s LAFC home debut tickets hit $3,800 — 10 times the original price

The so-called “Son Heung-min syndrome” shows no sign of slowing down. Ticket prices for the Korean football star’s home debut with Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer (MLS) have surged more than tenfold, driven by explosive demand from U.S. soccer fans. As of the afternoon of Aug. 15 (KST), U.S. ticket marketplace SeatGeek showed that premium seats for the Sept. 1 match between LAFC and San Diego FC at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles were listed at around $3,800 (5.3 million won). The original price for those seats was between $300 and $500, meaning prices have jumped nearly 10-fold. The seats are located close to the pitch. Prices have climbed even higher compared to just three days ago. British outlet TalkSPORT, citing an Aug. 12 report by the Hankook Ilbo, noted that tickets for Son’s home debut had jumped from $300 to $1,500. At the time, SeatGeek was selling those seats for about $1,500 — now they are more than double that price. The steep increase reflects the U.S. sports market’s dynamic pricing system, meaning prices could climb further. When Lionel Messi joined Inter

Son Heung-min to throw first pitch at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 27

Son Heung-min, the new forward for Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC (LAFC), will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 27 (U.S. time), the Los Angeles Dodgers announced Wednesday. The event will come just days before Son's home debut for LAFC. The Korean star, who joined the club Aug. 6 after a decade with Tottenham in England's Premier League, made his first appearance in an away match against the Chicago Fire on Aug. 9. He is set to play his first home game Aug. 31 against San Diego FC at BMO Stadium. Son posted the Dodgers' announcement on his social media page, joking to LAFC teammate Ryan Hollingshead, "We need to practice." The Dodgers and LAFC share the same home city, and the baseball club has welcomed Son with fanfare since his arrival. On Aug. 7, Dodgers infielder Kim Ha-seong and Korean American player Tommy Edman posted a video greeting on the team's social media channels. Kim wrote that he is a huge fan of Son, and it's an honor to play in the same area as him. Kim, who is on the injured list with a shoulder injury, is expected to return before th

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo hits triple in loss to Padres

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants maintained his hold on second place on the major league triples leaderboard. The Korean player recorded his 10th triple of the season in a 1-11 loss to the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, on Wednesday (local time). The triple, off a misplaced cutter from Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta in the seventh inning, traveled 377 feet and would have cleared the fence in four other MLB ballparks, including Angel Stadium in nearby Anaheim. With his 10th triple, Lee solidified his second-place standing in the National League, trailing only Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who has 14. Lee later came home to score on a sacrifice fly by the next batter before being replaced by Grant McCray at the start of the eighth inning. Lee finished the game 1-for-3 with one run scored, raising his season batting average to .257. The Giants, however, suffered a heavy 1-11 defeat to the Padres. With their fifth straight loss, San Francisco fell to 59-62. Meanwhile, San Diego's fifth consecutive win (69-52) moved them into first place in

Eagles set KBO single-season sellout record

The Hanwha Eagles broke their own Korean baseball league record with their 48th sellout of the season Wednesday. The Eagles hosted the Lotte Giants before a capacity crowd of 17,000 at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. In 2024, the Eagles had established the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) record with 47 sellouts at their old stadium, the 12,000-seat Hanwha Life Eagles Park. At their brand new home, the Eagles have sold out 48 of 54 games so far this year. The Eagles' sellout was the 255th this season leaguewide, already a new record. Their total attendance for the season reached 911,661 on Wednesday, the first time the Eagles have surpassed the 900,000 plateau. Four out of the 10 clubs in the KBO have drawn over 1 million fans this season, with both the Eagles and the SSG Landers (913,304) closing in on the million mark. Prior to Wednesday's action, the KBO had attracted 9,301,155 fans. The all-time record of 10,887,705 fans from 2024 is within striking distance with about a month and a half left this season.
