What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo extends season-best hitting streak to 10 games

Lee Jung-hoo has now had a base hit in 10 straight games for the San Francisco Giants. Lee batted 1-for-3 with a walk in an 8-4 loss to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego on Thursday (local time), stretching his season-best hit streak to 10 games. The South Korean center fielder has been held hitless just once in 19 games so far in August. Lee is batting .262 for the season and .338 for August. During his ongoing 10-game run, Lee is hitting 12-for-36 (.333). Lee wasted no time keeping his streak alive, as he led off the game with a single to center against starter Dylan Cease. Lee was erased in a double play hit by the next batter, Heliot Ramos. Lee reached on a fielding error by second baseman Jake Cronenworth in the top of the third and drew a walk in the fifth. Lee then lined out to Cronenworth with a runner at second in the seventh. Also in the majors Thursday, Kim Ha-seong of the Tampa Bay Rays was placed on the 10-day injured list (IL) with low back inflammation before the Rays took on the St. Louis Cardinals at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. The move is

Sincaraz: 2025 US Open's biggest keyword combines names of world No. 1 and 2 in men's tennis

NEW YORK (AP) — OK, sure, maybe it wouldn't be rational to say there's no point in actually holding the full U.S. Open and instead just fast-forwarding to the inevitable matchup for the men's championship between Jannik Sinner — assuming he's healthy — and Carlos Alcaraz on Sept. 7. Seems reasonable, though. “We know,” Novak Djokovic acknowledged, “they’re the dominant force right now.” When singles action begins Sunday at Flushing Meadows, a change from the usual Monday start, there are cases to be made for various players to make their way to the women's final. The top three in the rankings — No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka , No. 2 Iga Swiatek and No. 3 Coco Gauff — have won the past three U.S. Open titles, for example. Other past major champions such as Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina have performed well lately; maybe a new face will emerge. When it comes to the men, there really is just one name that matters in this post-Big Three era, and that name is “Sincaraz,” the silly, made-up, “Fedal”-style mashup of the guys who are ranked No. 1 (Sinner) and No. 2 (Alcaraz) an

Struggling Giants lose infielder for 3 weeks with oblique injury

Trying to win for the first time in over two weeks, the Lotte Giants have lost versatile infielder Jeon Min-jae to an oblique injury. Before taking on the LG Twins at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Thursday, Giants manager Kim Tae-hyoung said Jeon could be out for up to three weeks. Jeon, 26, joined the Giants in a trade from the Doosan Bears in November last year. He got off to a fast start for his new club and even led the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in batting average in late April before getting hit in the face by an errant pitch. He stayed hot at the plate after missing about two weeks and batted .388 in May. However, Jeon hit only .210 in June and then .111 in July, gradually losing his playing time in the process. He showed some signs of life in August with a .267 batting average before hitting the sidelines again. Jeon has mostly played shortstop but has also appeared at second base and third base. The Giants are winless in their past 11 games, with 10 losses and one tie. Their last victory came on Aug. 6. Their overall record stands at 58-55-4 (wins-losses-ties), still

Nat'l short track team brings back head coach from 2018 Winter Olympics

The national short track speed skating team has been reunited with a coach who guided the country to a successful performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics at home. The Korea Skating Union (KSU) announced Thursday that Kim Sun-tae will take the reins as the temporary head coach of the national short track team. The move comes with the 2026 Winter Games in Italy less than six months away. Kim coached Korea to three gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics — more gold medals and more total medals than any other country. However, the KSU later suspended Kim for one year for his lack of oversight, after it was belatedly revealed that Shim Suk-hee, a star skater on the women's team, had been physically and sexually abused by assistant coach Cho Jae-beom, in the leadup to the PyeongChang Olympics. Kim then became head coach of the Chinese national team and led his adopted country to two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal at the Beijing Winter Games in 2022. Kim returned home after the Olympics and coached the semi-pro club for S

Im Sung-jae proud of making 7th straight Tour Championship appearance

After squeezing into the exclusive-field Tour Championship for the seventh straight season, PGA Tour veteran Im Sung-jae said he is proud of having kept his streak alive. Im will be the only Korean among the 30 players who have qualified for the Tour Championship, the final event of the annual FedEx Cup playoffs. It will start Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Only the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup through two playoff events will get to tee off in the capital of Georgia, and Im ranked 28th. "I want to pat myself on the back for playing in my seventh consecutive Tour Championship, starting in my rookie season," Im said in an interview with the PGA Tour conducted Wednesday in Atlanta. "There have been times when things didn't go my way but I've been able to overcome those hurdles quickly. I am satisfied with how well I've played for these past seven years." Im said his goal at the start of this season was to qualify for the Tour Championship and pick up his third career victory. "I haven't accomplished all of my goals but I am still happy that I've made it to the Tour Championsh

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo sets new season high with 9-game hitting streak

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has set a new season high with a nine-game hitting streak. Lee batted 1-for-4 in the Giants' 8-1 loss to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego on Wednesday (local time). Batting sixth, Lee got his lone hit of the game in the top of the second inning, with a single off starter JP Sears. Lee struck out twice in his next two trips to the plate and then lined out to second in the ninth inning. The Korean center fielder is batting .262 for the season and .344 for the month of August. He has hit safely in 17 of 18 games played so far this month. If Lee keeps it up, he would end August with his highest batting average for any month in his two-year big league career. He batted .324 in April this year. Also in the majors Wednesday, Kim Ha-seong of the Tampa Bay Rays was scratched from the starting lineup against the New York Yankees due to low back tightness. Kim spent time on the 10-day injured list from late July to early August with a low back strain. He only made his season debut on July 4 after recovering from shoulder surgery he'd had in Octob

K League-leading Jeonbuk held by Gangwon in Korea Cup semis; Gwangju beat Bucheon

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors were held to a 1-1 draw by Gangwon FC to begin the semifinals of the top national football tournament Wednesday, as they begin their quest for a domestic double. Defender Kim Young-bin put Jeonbuk up 1-0 three minutes into the second half, before Gangwon midfielder Goo Bon-cheol leveled the score 14 minutes later in the first leg of the Korea Cup semifinals at Jeonju World Cup Stadium in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province. The return leg between the two K League 1 clubs is 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday at Gangneung High1 Arena in Gangneung, Gangwon Province. Jeonbuk have a comfortable, 17-point lead atop the K League 1 tables with 60 points with a dozen matches left, poised for their league-record 10th title. They are now a win away from reaching the Korea Cup final. With Wednesday's draw, Jeonbuk extended their undefeated streak to 26 matches in all competitions. Their last defeat came against Gangwon FC in a K League 1 match on March 9. Giants' Lee Jung-hoo belts 2nd career leadoff home run

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has extended his hitting streak to eight games with his second career leadoff home run. Lee opened his team's game against the San Diego Padres with a solo homer off starter Nick Pivetta at Petco Park in San Diego on Tuesday (local time), for his seventh home run of 2025 and his first since May 14. The home run provided the only run for the Giants, who lost the game 5-1. After taking a first-pitch strike, Lee drilled the next pitch, a fastball at 94.6 miles per hour (mph), and sent it 400 feet into the seats in right-center field. The ball left Lee's bat at 27 degrees and 101.8 mph. This was Lee's first leadoff homer of the season and the second of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career, following the one against the Arizona Diamondbacks as a rookie on April 20, 2024. Lee also matched his season high with an eight-game hitting streak. Lee enjoyed an eight-game run from March 29 to April 7, and again from Aug. 1 to 9. His career high is an 11-game streak from the 2024 season. Lee has now hit safely in 15 of 16 games so far in August. Pivetta got the be

Ex-Man Utd star Lingard earns 1st monthly award in K League

Former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard has earned his first Player of the Month award in the top Korean league. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) announced Tuesday that Lingard, midfielder and captain for FC Seoul, held off three candidates for the Player of the Month honor for July. It snapped a streak of three straight wins by a player from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors — with forward Jeon Jin-woo having been named the top player for April and May and fellow attacker Andrea Compagno nabbing the award for June. Lingard, 32, joined FC Seoul in February last year. He previously starred for Manchester United and also played for West Ham United and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. He was the Premier League Player of the Month for April 2021 while on loan with West Ham United. The winner was chosen based on votes by the K League's technical study group (accounting for 60 percent), fans voting on the K League website (25 percent) and players of EA Sports FC Online (15 percent) by Electronic Arts (EA) Sports, the league's official video game partner. The K League said Li

KBO regular season to end Sept. 30

The 2025 regular season in Korean baseball is set to end Sept. 30. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) released the schedule for makeup games Tuesday. A total of 53 games, including those that were rained out over the course of the summer, will be played between Sept. 1 and 30. The league office has also left several open days in case of further rainouts. Games that are canceled due to inclement weather between now and the end of September will be played on one of those open days or will be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader. After Sept. 15, though, the KBO will not force teams to play a doubleheader on a Monday. The first game of a doubleheader will start at 3 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays. The second game will begin at 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays. If the first game ends past 5:50 p.m. on weekdays and 4:20 p.m. on weekends and holidays, then the next game will begin 40 minutes after the conclusion of the opener. The KBO said it will ensure no team will have to play more than nine days in a row. A three-game set from Sept. 26 and 28
