Korea needs a bigger and better coaching pool

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo extends hitting streak to 7 games

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has pushed his hitting streak to seven games, tying his second longest run of the season. Lee batted 1-for-4 and scored twice as the Giants shut out the Washington Nationals 5-0 at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Friday (local time). The lone hit was a single, ending Lee's extra-base hit streak at six games. Batting sixth, Lee flied out in the first and grounded out in the third. In the bottom of the sixth, Lee sent a hard grounder down the first base line underneath the glove of first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, and Lee reached second as the ball rolled into right field corner. The play was ruled an error by Lowe, robbing Lee of a double. Lee got his one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning off Shinnosuke Ogasawara. Lee advanced to third on Casey Schmitt's groundout to third, and then scored the 5-0 run with some heads-up baserunning. Patrick Bailey hit a dribbler toward the third base line, and catcher Drew Millas left home to field the ball and throw it to first. With Millas out of position and no one covering home on the play, Lee alertly ran home and

Lone LPGA tournament in Korea to be played on southern coast

The lone LPGA tournament held in Korea each fall will be played on a seaside course on the southern coast this year, the event's organizers said Friday. The BMW Ladies Championship will take place at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, some 330 kilometers south of Seoul, from Oct. 16 to 19. The LPGA and BMW Korea have been taking the tournament around the country since the southeastern city of Busan hosted the first two editions in 2019 and 2021 — with the 2020 event canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 tournament was held in the eastern town of Wonju, and the city of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, some 30 km northwest of Seoul, hosted the next two editions. Designed by Gary Roger Baird and Davie Dale, Pine Beach Golf Links features several greens and tee boxes sitting along the beach and atop seaside cliffs. It has long been regarded as one of the best courses in Korea thanks to its scenic backdrop and challenges it presents with sloping fairways and intimidating bunkers. Separately, BMW Korea said it has extended its partnership with the LPGA to host its nam

Reigning KBO MVP Kim Do-yeong sidelined with 3rd hamstring injury of season

The 2024 Korean baseball MVP Kim Do-yeong will miss the rest of the regular season with his third hamstring injury of 2025, his club announced Friday. Kim's Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) team, the Kia Tigers, said an MRI showed Friday that Kim had sustained damage to his left hamstring. Due to swelling in the area, Kim will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks to determine the full extent of his injury, the Tigers added. With 42 games left, the Tigers have decided to keep Kim on the sidelines for the remainder of the regular season, regardless of the result of further tests. "Given that he has muscle damage, it's unlikely he will be back any time soon," a Tigers official said. "As a precaution, we have decided to let Kim Do-yeong rest and recover for the rest of the season." Kim was forced to leave Thursday's game against the Lotte Giants after he suffered what the Tigers said was cramp in his left hamstring. Playing third base, Kim bobbled a ground ball hit by Yoon Dong-hee and then came up limping after he failed to pick up the ball off the ground with his bare hand. After chatting

Retiring pitcher Oh Seung-hwan wants to go out with bang

A day after announcing his plan to retire after this season, Samsung Lions reliever Oh Seung-hwan, widely considered the greatest closer in Korean baseball history, said Thursday he will try to go out with a bang, not a whimper. Oh, 43, said Wednesday he will retire after the end of the 2025 season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). He has spent his entire 15-year career in the KBO with the Lions and notched 427 saves, more than any pitcher in the league's 43-year history. Oh also collected 80 saves in two seasons with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), and 42 saves in four seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Colorado Rockies in Major League Baseball (MLB). Oh remains the only Korean pitcher to record a save in the KBO, NPB and MLB. The Lions will retire Oh's No. 21. He will be the fourth player in Lions history — and their first pitcher — to have his number retired, joining club legends Lee Man-soo (No. 22), Yang Joon-hyuk (No. 10) and Lee Seung-yuop (No. 36). "This retirement thing hasn't hit me yet. The word 'fin

Lotte Giants sign ex-MLB pitcher Vince Velasquez

The Lotte Giants announced Thursday they have signed former major league pitcher Vince Velasquez, as they try to make their first postseason trip in eight years. Velasquez, a 33-year-old right-hander from California, will make $330,000 for the rest of this season. He will join the Giants' rotation in place of Tucker Davidson, who will leave in the middle of his first season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) after going 10-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 22 starts. Davidson pitched six innings of one-run ball in a 5-1 win over the Kia Tigers on Wednesday. While his overall numbers are solid, the American left-hander did not pitch as well in June (7.71 ERA) and July (4.05 ERA) as he did in March-April (2.18 ERA) and May (2.70 ERA). Seeking more consistency from the top of their rotation, the Giants made their second foreign pitching change of the season. In May, they replaced Charlie Barnes with Alec Gamboa, who has since been among the KBO's best starters, with a 7-3 record, 2.14 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings. In Velasquez, the Giants are getting an experienced hurler with 144 big le

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo gets extra-base hit for 6th consecutive game

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has now recorded an extra-base hit in his sixth consecutive game. Lee batted 1-for-4 with a double, as the Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Wednesday (local time). Batting seventh in the lineup, Lee grounded out in his first two trips to the plate before flying out to third base in his third at-bat. Lee then extended his extra-base hit streak in the ninth inning, while also giving his team the lead. With one out in the ninth and the score knotted at 2-2, Lee doubled to right-center field to begin the late rally. Lee then came around to score the go-ahead run on a double by Dominic Smith. Patrick Bailey cashed in Smith for the insurance run with a single, and the Giants hung on to win 4-2. Lee is batting .258 for the season but is heating up with a .417 average in August. He has hit safely in all six games so far this month, with five doubles and one triple during his extra-base streak. Elsewhere in the majors, Kim Ha-seong of the Tampa Bay Rays went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles

Also in attendance for Son's introductory press conference at BMO Stadium were Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles Councilwoman Heather Hutt and Korean American Federation of Los Angeles President Robert Ahn. The Major League Soccer (MLS) club's signing of Son, one of Korea's most beloved athletes, is expected to galvanize a sizable Korean community in Los Angeles. Son's No. 7 jerseys were already being seen in the city earlier this week, even before the player widely known as Sonny was officially unveiled. "This is a historic day. This is an exciting day for the city of Los Angeles," Bass said at the start of the press conference. "Sonny, I know you called this the perfect moment. I want you to know that we couldn't agree more about that but not just for Los Angeles. It's more than perfect. It's personal for our Korean American community. The Korean populati

California dreaming: Son Heung-min wants to go down as legend for LAFC

Having just completed a decadelong career in England as a veritable legend for his former club, South Korean football star Son Heung-min says he now wants to go down as a legend for his new club too. Son was unveiled as the newest member of Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in Los Angeles on Wednesday (local time). The Major League Soccer (MLS) club said they had acquired Sonny, as he is widely known, on a permanent transfer from Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League through 2027 with an option for 2028 and an additional option through June 2029. Son ended his 10-year Spurs tenure as the fifth-best scorer in club history with 173 goals in 454 matches in all competitions. He won the Premier League Golden Boot as its top goal scorer for the 2021-2022 season, and only three months ago, he captained Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League title and ended the North London club's 17-year trophy drought. Now 33, Son said he will embrace new challenges that lie ahead. "There is no guarantee that I will play well here, just because I had success in Europe. I am getting a fresh start, and my dream is
