What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo pushes hitting streak to 7

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has stretched his hitting streak to seven games, continuing his strong form in August. Lee batted 1-for-4 in the Giants' 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego on Monday (local time). Lee has had at least one hit in 15 of 16 games so far in August. He started the month with an eight-game hitting streak to match his season high. After going 0-for-3 against the Washington Nationals on Aug. 10, Lee has hit safely in the next seven games. Lee is batting .260 for the season and .333 for August. The Korean center fielder kept his streak going with a single to center in the top of the third inning. He grounded out in the first inning and in the eighth inning, and hit a flyout to center in the fifth inning. A second-year big leaguer, Lee batted .324 in April — the first full month of the season — but only hit .231 in May before dipping further with a .143 average in June. Lee showed some signs of life in July, with a .278 average and has been a steady presence in the Giants' lineup in August.

K League-leading Jeonbuk eye final berth at top nat'l tournament

As they close in on a title in the top domestic football league, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will also try to book a trip to the final of the biggest national tournament starting this week. Jeonbuk will host fellow K League 1 side Gangwon FC in the first leg of the semifinals of the Korea Cup at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jeonju World Cup Stadium in Jeonju, 200 kilometers south of Seoul. The second leg will be at Gangwon FC's home in the eastern town of Gangneung at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. The away goals rule will not apply, and if the teams are tied in the aggregate score after two matches, they will go to extra time and, if necessary, the penalty shootout. Jeonbuk have all but secured the K League 1 title. With a dozen matches left, they are leading the 12-club competition with 60 points, 17 ahead of their closest pursuer, Gimcheon Sangmu FC. Jeonbuk are undefeated in their past 25 matches in all competitions. Gangwon FC happen to be the last club to beat Jeonbuk, and their 1-0 win in K League 1 action came on March 9. Since then, Jeonbuk have put up 17 wins and five draws in the K League 1 and three

Sports organization to host int'l academic conference to celebrate 1988 Seoul Olympics

The Korean Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (KAHPERD) announced Tuesday it will hold an academic conference this week in commemoration of the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. The 37th International Sport Science Congress will begin its three-day run Thursday at Seoul Olympic Parktel, with Korea National Sport University set to host presentations on Friday and Saturday. Under the title "Olympic Legacy and the Horizon Beyond: From 1988 to 2036," this year's conference will explore legacies of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the first Olympic Games to take place in South Korea, while also looking ahead to the country's bid to host the 2036 Summer Games. "The Seoul Olympic Games were more than just a sporting event. They were a historic milestone that allowed South Korea to leave an imprint on the world through sports," KAHPERD President Choi Kwan-yong said. "By inheriting the spirit of the 1988 Olympics, this conference will be an opportunity to develop a new sports ecosystem that combines academics with policies, and technologies with practice." Dodgers' Kim Hye-seong to begin minor league rehab assignment this week

Out since late July with shoulder inflammation, Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers will begin a rehab assignment in the minor leagues this week. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Sunday (U.S. local time) that Kim will report to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets this week to test out his left shoulder in a game setting. Per reports, the South Korean rookie was able to take live batting practice Sunday without problems. Kim landed on the injured list (IL) with left shoulder bursitis on July 29. Kim, who bats left and throws right, had been dealing with left shoulder pains for days that had affected his swing before being placed on the IL. He finished June with a .383/.425/.543 line, but he hit only .193/.207/.211 in 21 games in July before hitting the sidelines, including a 2-for-12 skid with nine strikeouts over his final five games. He signed with the Dodgers in January after eight years in the Korea Baseball Organization. Kim overhauled his swing during spring training and began the regular season in Triple-A before being called up on May 3. In 58 games, Kim has a .304/.3

KBO's new check-swing challenge system to take effect this week

Beginning Tuesday, teams in Korean baseball will be able to ask for video reviews on check-swing calls. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said the check-swing challenge system will take effect across the league Tuesday, about a month after the league's executive committee, made up of general managers of the 10 clubs, reached the decision to implement the new rule. The KBO had initially planned to introduce the check-swing challenge at the start of the 2026 season, after testing it out in the Futures League, the KBO's minor league, in 2025. However, several managers have been calling for a prompt implementation of this system, citing the need for accurate and transparent calls. If the end of the bat crosses a line parallel to the front side of the home plate, it will be ruled a swing. The batting team can only challenge a swing call, and the pitching team can only ask for a review of a no-swing call. Teams will each have two opportunities to ask for a video review on check-swing calls, and they will be awarded another opportunity in extra innings. If teams are successful in overturnin

Badminton star An Se-young banking on fond memories in France in world title defense

Badminton star An Se-young said Monday she will try to add to her fond memories of winning tournaments in France when she goes for her second straight world title in Paris later this month. An, world No. 1, will be the defending champion in the women's singles when the 29th edition of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships begin in the French capital on Aug. 25. The final will be Aug. 31. An, 23, has won several international tournaments in France, most notably her first Olympic gold medal in Paris last summer. The world championships will be played at the same venue in the French capital. "I've always played well in France, and I can't wait to see what kind of performance I will have there," An said at a national team press conference at the Jincheon National Training Center in Jincheon, 85 kilometers of Seoul. "I've been quite lucky at times in France and I have good feelings about competing in France again." In addition to her Olympic gold, An won the Orleans Masters title in France in March this year and the French Open title in March 2024. An, though, stressed that

Mired in late-summer swoon, Giants face crucial week in KBO

Having won just once in their past 10 games, the Lotte Giants are entering a crucial week that could make or break their postseason hopes in South Korean baseball. The Giants will play all six games in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) this week on the road — the first three against the first-place LG Twins in Seoul and then the next three against the NC Dinos, who are also in the thick of the postseason battle, in the southeastern town of Changwon. After games on Aug. 1, the Giants were in third place at 55-44-3 (wins-losses-ties), four games behind the second-place Hanwha Eagles and also four games up on the fourth-place SSG Landers. Since then, however, the Giants have gone 3-9-1 and are now eight games behind the Eagles. Their lead over the Landers is down to just one game. The Giants are now closer to ninth place than they are to second place. The Giants had a chance to snap their eight-game losing streak Sunday at home against the Samsung Lions but settled for an 8-8 tie. How they got there particularly stung, as they blew a 7-3 lead in the top of the eighth and then stranded

Ex-world No. 1 Park Sung-hyun records 1st LPGA Top 10 finish in 6 years

Former world No. 1 Park Sung-hyun has posted her first top-10 finish in six years on the LPGA Tour. Park put up a seven-under 65 in the final round of the Standard Portland Classic at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday (local time), and finished tied for seventh at 17-under 272, alongside fellow South Korean player Ryu Hae-ran and Lauren Coughlin of the United States. It was Park's first top-10 performance since she finished eighth at the AIG Women's Open in August 2019. She poured in five birdies and an eagle on the front nine and reached as high as second place at one point during the final round. She had two more birdies on the back nine before closing her tournament with a bogey on the 18th hole. "I had a really good start. Everything was working in my favor, so was really happy about the front nine," Park said through an interpreter. "The back nine, there were some misses that happened. I missed a couple short putts, so I feel like I could have done a little bit better there." The 65 matched Park's best round of the tournament, but she said she "wasn't too

Giants, Lee beat Rays, Kim in final clash of 2025 MLB season

The San Francisco Giants have defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1 in the clubs' final meeting of the season at home, with their Korean center fielder Lee Jung-hoo turning an acrobatic, if unusual, play with his knees. After losing the first two games of this three-game set, the Giants claimed the finale after pounding out 11 hits at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sunday (local time). This series was the only meeting this year between these two clubs, who play in opposite leagues, and between two Koreans for their respective clubs — Lee for the Giants and shortstop Kim Ha-seong for the Rays. Lee and Kim are the only two Koreans currently active in Major League Baseball, with Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers on the injured list. Lee batted leadoff for the first time since July 27 and went 1-for-4. He had been hitting anywhere from fifth to seventh in the lineup in August before moving back to the top of the order in this game. That lone hit was a double that opened the game for the Giants in the bottom of the first. With 28 doubles, Lee leads the Giants and is tied for eighth in the

Im Sung-jae qualifies for 7th straight Tour Championship

Im Sung-jae will play in his seventh consecutive Tour Championship to close out the annual PGA Tour playoffs. Im squeezed into the exclusive-field event by finishing 28th in the FedEx Cup standings after the end of the BMW Championship, the second leg of the playoffs, at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owing Mills, Maryland, on Sunday (local time). Only the top 30 players after two playoff events are eligible for the Tour Championship, which begins Thursday in Atlanta. Im shot a three-under 67 in the final round at the BMW Championship to finish at 10-over 290, tying for 40th among 49 players in action. Im slipped from 25th to 28th in the FedEx Cup rankings but still extended his Tour Championship appearance streak to seven -- the longest ever by a Korean player. Im will now try to salvage what has largely been a disappointing season. He has only recorded three top-10 finishes this year, the fewest in a season for the 2018-2019 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. The PGA Tour has eliminated the starting strokes system at the Tour Championship, where the No. 1 player in FedEx Cup points used to begin
