Korea needs a bigger and better coaching pool

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Korean name for late golfer restored on trophy for Japan tournament

Over eight decades after winning a Japanese tournament under his Japanese name during the country's colonial occupation of his native land, the late Korean-born golfer Yern Duk-choon had his birth name restored on the trophy Tuesday. In a ceremony held in Seoul, the Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) unveiled the trophy for the Japan Open Golf Championship that now bears Yern's Korean name as the 1941 champion. Yern, the first professional golfer from Korea, won the prestigious tournament during the colonial period and competed as Tokuharu Nobuhara. The Japan Golf Association (JGA) put Yern's Japanese name into its record books, too. Last year, both the KPGA, which runs the domestic pro tour, and the Korea Golf Association, the sport's national governing body, asked the JGA to change Yern's name and nationality in the Japan Open trophy and the JGA record books. The Japanese body agreed to do so in April this year. The ceremony was held three days before the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's 1910-1945 colonial rule. This year also marks the 60th anniversary o

High jumper Woo Sang-hyeok halts European tour due to calf injury, to focus on worlds

High jumper Woo Sang-hyeok has ended his scheduled European tour prematurely due to some calf discomfort and will instead focus on preparing for the world championships next month, officials said Tuesday. Woo, world No. 1 in the men's high jump, was set to compete in a high jump meet in Heilbronn, Germany, on Sunday, but did not participate in it after being introduced to the crowd. According to an official with the Korea Association of Athletics Federations, Woo felt some discomfort in his calf during warmup and pulled out of the German event as a precaution. The official said Woo has also pulled out of the next two competitions in Europe — a Diamond League stop in Poland this week and the Diamond League Final in Switzerland at the end of August. Woo is due back home Wednesday and will undergo tests to determine the extent of his injury. Woo has won all seven of his international events this season, including the world indoor title and two Diamond League victories. Woo likely would have qualified for the Diamond League Final, which is open to the top six in the points standings, but he

‘Son Heung-min effect’ hits LA early with jersey sellouts, soaring ticket prices

Los Angeles is already experiencing the “Son Heung-min effect,” with his jerseys selling out and ticket prices for home matches skyrocketing. The arrival of the South Korean superstar, who joins MLB icon Shohei Ohtani in the city, is heating up the city’s Asian market. As of Monday afternoon in Korea, LAFC’s official online store had sold out all but the largest size of its black-and-gold home jersey featuring Son’s No. 7. When Son joined LAFC on Aug. 7, the club’s physical stores were swamped with fans trying to buy his jersey. Just four days later, the online store was also sold out. Some official outlets have been turning customers away, telling them they can buy jerseys from other branches and bring them in for customization — adding a name and number — which costs about 50,000 won ($37). The pre-personalized player jersey sells for $194.99. In Korea, fans can also order from the club’s official online store, but some reported having their overseas purchases abruptly canceled due to stock shortages and overwhelming demand. “I bought it through international ship

KBO-worst Heroes lose closer for season to elbow injury

The last-place team in Korean baseball will miss their closer for the rest of the season due to an elbow injury. The Kiwoom Heroes announced Monday that right-handed reliever Ju Seung-woo will undergo elbow reconstructive surgery, commonly called Tommy John surgery, in his pitching arm on Aug. 22. Ju will require about a year of rehab and recovery, the Heroes added. Ju complained of elbow pains after recording two outs in a relief outing against the Doosan Bears during Sunday's game in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). The Heroes took him out and had him undergo multiple tests Monday, which showed damage to his right elbow ligament. Ju, 25, had been the Heroes' closer since last season. He recorded 14 saves in 2024 and had 16 saves to rank eighth overall this season, along with a 2.45 ERA in 44 innings, before hitting the sidelines. "I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to finish the season with the club," Ju said. "I will do my best in rehab and try to be back healthy next year." The Heroes are in last place in the KBO at 33-73-4 (wins-losses-ties). They also finished dead last in ea

Ahn Hyun-min, the hot-hitting rookie outfielder for the KT Wiz, has been named the top player in Korean baseball for the month of July. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said Ahn earned the most votes from media and fans for the Player of the Month honor for July. He is the first Wiz player to nab this award since starter William Cuevas won it for August 2023. Ahn collected 24 out of 35 votes from members of the Korea Baseball Writers Association and 32,578 out of 447,304 votes cast by fans, earning 37.93 voting points. In 21 games in July, Ahn ranked second in the KBO with a .441 batting average and topped the competition with a .551 on-base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage. Struggling KBO contenders set for midweek clash

A pair of slumping postseason contenders will square off in a critical midweek series in Korean baseball, each hoping to right the ship with fewer than 40 games left in the regular season. The Hanwha Eagles, in second place in the Korea Baseball Organization ) at 61-42-3 (wins-losses-ties), will host the third-ranked Lotte Giants (58-48-3) for a three-game series starting Tuesday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, about 140 kilometers south of Seoul. The Eagles have the league's worst winning percentage in August at 2-5-0. They barely avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the first-place LG Twins (65-42-2) over the weekend, winning the finale 5-4 on Sunday after dropping the first two games. The Eagles now trail the Twins by two games. The Eagles' bullpen, which had been their strength all season, has completely fallen apart in August. Their relievers have pitched to a 6.84 ERA in seven games this month while allowing a disastrous .951 on-base plus slugging (OPS) against their opponents. Both are the worst marks in the KBO in August. Their All-Star closer Kim Seo-hyeon, in

Rays' Kim Ha-seong homers for 1st time in month; hitting streak ends for Giants' Lee Jung-hoo

Kim Ha-seong of the Tampa Bay Rays has homered for the first time in a month while driving in multiple runs, while Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants had his hitting streak snapped at eight games. Kim batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and also drew a walk against the Seattle Mariners, though his Rays still lost the game 6-3 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Sunday (local time). Batting seventh, Kim lined a double to left off starter Bryan Woo in the top of the second. It was Kim's second double of the season and his first since July 9. In his next time up, with two outs and nobody on in the fourth, Kim crushed a first-pitch fastball and sent it into the seats in left for a solo homer, cutting the Rays' deficit to 4-3. Kim's previous homer had come on July 10. Kim drew a walk in the sixth inning before grounding out in the eighth. His batting average jumped from .192 to .218 after this productive day. This was only Kim's 17th game of the season. The shortstop had a delayed start to his first season with the Rays while recovering from last fall's shoulder surgery and then miss

Im Sung-jae, the only other Korean in the field, finished one stroke behind Kim in a tie for 17th after carding a 67 on Sunday. This was the first leg of the annual FedEx Cup playoffs. Son Heung-min draws penalty for LAFC in MLS debut

Son Heung-min marked his Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) debut with a strong performance as a second-half substitute in an away match, drawing a key penalty that led to his team's equalizer. Son came off the bench in the 61st minute to replace David Martinez for his first Major League Soccer (MLS) match against Chicago Fire FC at SeatGeek Stadium Bridgeview, Illinois, on Saturday (local time), as LAFC fought back for a 2-2 draw. Some 10 minutes after firing a weak left-footed shot from outside the box in the 67th minute, Son made his presence felt, with LAFC trailing 2-1. He was sent on a counterbreak after Brian Gutierrez hit the left goal post at the other end, and was brought down by a hard challenge from Carlos Teran. Referee Ricardo Montero let the play continue first, but after a call down from the video assistant referee, Montero reviewed the play and awarded LAFC a penalty. Denis Bouanga converted the ensuing spot kick to level the score. Son had a right-footed shot blocked by Chicago's Jonathan Dean during stoppage time as the teams ended in a stalemate. Son said afterward he was

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo ties season high with 8-game hitting streak

The San Francisco Giants' Lee Jung-hoo has matched his season high by hitting safely in his eighth consecutive game. From No. 6 spot in the lineup, Lee batted 1-for-4 in a 4-2 loss to the Washington Nationals at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday (local time). Lee kept his streak alive with an infield single in his final plate appearance in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lee grounded out to third in the second inning and again in the fourth inning, before lining out to left field in the seventh. Then in the ninth, Lee sent a chopper down the third base line that normally would have led to a groundout. But third baseman Brady House had been shading toward the shortstop side -- the spot where he had caught Lee's first two grounders -- and by the time House got to the ball, Lee was already on first base for his first hit of the game. Lee's batting average for the season remained at .258, but he is hitting .375 in eight games in August. Lee also had an eight-game streak from March 29 to April 7. His career high is an 11-game run from his rookie campaign in 2024.
