What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo 2nd Korean with 30 doubles in MLB season

San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo has become the second Korean player ever to hit 30 doubles in a single Major League Baseball season, following Choo Shin-soo. The 27-year-old Lee reached the milestone Wednesday (U.S. time) with a double in the Giants' 12-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Oracle Park in San Francisco. Lee's hit came in the fourth inning off Cubs starter Colin Rea, marking his 30th double of the season, a feat only one other Korean has achieved. Choo, now an adviser to the owner of the SSG Landers in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), holds the record for the most 30-double seasons by a Korean player in MLB with eight times. His 43 doubles recorded in 2012 remain the single-season high for a Korean in the majors. Lee's 30 doubles currently tie him for eighth place in the MLB National League, five behind league leader Matt Olson of the Atlanta Braves. The milestone also placed Lee in a select company of players within Giants history. He became only the fifth player in the club's history to record at least 30 doubles and 10 triples in the same season, joining

Korea to host Brazil in men's football friendly in Oct.

Korea will host Brazil in a men's football friendly in October as part of their preparation for next year's FIFA World Cup, officials announced Tuesday. The Korea Football Association (KFA) said the match will kick off at 8 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Seoul World Cup Stadium in western Seoul, during the Oct. 6-14 FIFA international match window. Korea are also set to face Paraguay on Oct. 14. The friendly had been announced earlier, but the KFA confirmed Tuesday that it will be played at the same venue, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m. The upcoming match will mark Brazil's first visit to Korea in more than three years, with their last appearance being a friendly in June 2022. Korea, ranked 23rd in the FIFA standings, have historically struggled against the South American powerhouse, earning just one win in eight meetings — a 1-0 victory in 1999. Brazil, currently ranked fifth, have already booked their place at the tournament following a strong qualifying campaign in South America. Before the October friendlies, the Taeguk Warriors will travel to the United States in September for friendlies aga

Sabalenka, Djokovic win before Medvedev tirade sparks chaos at US Open

NEW YORK — Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic overcame early tests to reach the U.S. Open second round before the Grand Slam descended into chaos late on Sunday when Daniil Medvedev launched a tirade at the match umpire and fans disrupted his opponent's service game. New York's famously rowdy fans caused a six-minute delay by refusing to stop jeering and booing midway through Medvedev's 6-3 7-5 6-7(5) 0-6 6-4 defeat by Benjamin Bonzi on Louis Armstrong Stadium. The controversy began when a photographer entered the court prematurely after Bonzi missed his first serve on match point at 5-4 in the third set, prompting chair umpire Greg Allensworth to award the Frenchman another first serve for the disturbance. An incensed Medvedev exploded at the official and whipped up the crowd, preventing a rattled Bonzi from serving. Medvedev, the 2021 champion at Flushing Meadows, fought off the match point and took the set in a tie break before bageling Bonzi in the fourth to set up a decider. It was not to be his day, however, as Bonzi composed himself to secure a dramatic win. "The energy was wild.

Jens Castrop becomes first foreign-born mixed-heritage player to join Taeguk Warriors

Jens Castrop, a 22-year-old midfielder with dual German and Korean citizenship, became the first foreign-born, multiracial player to be called up to the Korean men's senior national football team Monday. Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo included Castrop in a 26-man roster for the team's upcoming friendlies against the United States and Mexico in September. The call-up comes as the Taeguk Warriors regroup for the first time since July's East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Championship. The squad already secured its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup earlier this year. Born in Dusseldorf in 2003 to a German father and Korean mother, Castrop previously represented Germany at various youth levels. He had been seen as a potential addition to Korea's midfield but was unable to join the team in the first half of the year due to injuries. His inclusion follows his official switch of international allegiance from the German Football Association to the Korea Football Association after making a full recovery. The midfielder began his professional career with FC Koln and rose to prominence in the

Son Heung-min 'really disappointed' with not getting win despite scoring 1st LAFC goal

As happy as he was to score his first goal for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), Korean superstar Son Heung-min also said he was "really disappointed" not to come away with a win in an away match against FC Dallas. Son netted a picturesque free kick goal in the sixth minute for LAFC for his first Major League Soccer (MLS) goal, but the lead lasted only seven minutes as Logan Farrington scored the equalizer for the home side at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday (local time). The teams ended in a 1-1 draw, with LAFC outshooting FC Dallas 6-2, with a 20-11 edge in shot attempts. "I thought we dominated the game. We created chances," Son said afterward. "Not scoring (more) goals and getting a draw, I think it's really disappointing." Son, who joined LAFC earlier in August, has now played three matches, the last two of them as starts. He said he was "still settling in" with his new team, and he was "enjoying every single moment." "I am glad that I scored the first goal with LAFC," he added. "But for me, the most important thing is to get three points. I am really, really disappointe

Son Heung-min scores 1st MLS goal for LAFC

Son Heung-min has scored his first goal for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) three matches into his U.S. career. Son lasered in a free kick stunner to open the scoring in the sixth minute against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday (local time). This was Son's third match in Major League Soccer (MLS). He was brought in off the bench in his LAFC debut against Chicago Fire FC on Aug. 9 and then made his first start against New England Revolution a week later. Son picked up his first MLS assist against Revolution before finally getting his first goal against FC Dallas. After Denis Bouanga was fouled just outside the box, Son stepped up to take the spot kick. The Korean superstar curled it over the wall and into the top left corner, past the diving goalkeeper Michael Collodi. Son has yet to play at home since joining LAFC, but his presence has been drawing sizable Korean crowds at every road stop so far. Against FC Dallas, Son heard loud cheers virtually every time he touched the ball, and the volume went up several notches after he got his first MLS marker. Logan Farring

Hitting streak ends at 10 games for San Francisco's Lee Jung-hoo

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has had his season-best hitting streak snapped at 10 games. Lee went 0-for-4 with a strikeout as the Giants lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Friday (local time). Lee fell one game shy of matching his career-high 11-game hitting streak from his rookie campaign in 2024. He is still in the midst of a strong August spree. So far this month, Lee has had at least one hit in 18 of 20 games and has a .320 batting average. For the season, Lee's batting average dipped slightly from .262 to .260. Batting sixth, Lee popped out in the second inning and then grounded out in the fourth. Lee then came up with two outs and the bases loaded and the score knotted at 2-2, but he struck out swinging against reliever Shelby Miller. Lee grounded out to shortstop Andruw Monasterio in his final at-bat in the top of the ninth.

Ex-Texas Rangers All-Star Choo Shin-soo threw out the ceremonial first pitch for his former club. Choo tossed the first pitch before the Rangers' home game against the Cleveland Guardians at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Friday (local time). The 43-year-old is currently an adviser to the owner of the SSG Landers in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) after playing for them from 2021 to 2024. He was named to an All-Star team in 2018 and holds the franchise record with a 52-game on-base streak.
