What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Heroes outfielder Cardenas sidelined with broken finger, likely out for KBO season

The Kiwoom Heroes announced Monday their American outfielder Ruben Cardenas will be sidelined for three weeks with a broken finger. With the Heroes stuck in last place in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with only 17 games to go, it appears unlikely Cardenas will play again this season. The regular season is scheduled to end September 30. The Heroes have the worst record in the 10-team league at 40-83-4 (wins-losses-ties), 16 games behind ninth-place Doosan Bears. According to the Heroes, Cardenas had been complaining of pain in his left pinkie after being struck by a throw while running the bases during a game against the SSG Landers on Aug. 14. Cardenas was then diagnosed with a fracture in that finger, which will require three weeks of rest and treatment. Cardenas batted .253 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs in only 86 games in this injury-plagued season. He got off to a quick start, even leading the league in RBIs at one point. He had 16 RBIs over his first seven games in March but had only four more in 18 games in April and five RBIs in 27 games in May. He missed the entire mon

Son Heung-min hits post, held goalless in LAFC home debut

Son Heung-min was held without a goal in his first match at home for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), though it wasn't from any lack of opportunities or effort. The South Korean superstar struck the right goal post in the second half after being denied by the opposing goalkeeper in the first half, as LAFC lost to San Diego FC 2-1 in Major League Soccer (MLS) at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday (local time). Son had played three consecutive away matches after joining LAFC in early August. He had a goal and an assist in those three contests, with LAFC posting a win and two draws, but couldn't add to his total against the best team in the Western Conference. San Diego, having now won seven consecutive away matches, lead the west with 56 points. LAFC stayed in fifth in the same conference with 41 points, but they have three matches in hand on both San Diego and second-place Minnesota United FC (51 points). The clubs traded a goal apiece in the first half, with Denis Bounaga opening the scoring for LAFC in the 15th minute and Hirving Lozano responding for San Diego in the 33rd minute. Son

Korea coach hints at further experimentation in 2 friendlies in US

Korea men's football head coach Hong Myung-bo said Monday he sees the two upcoming friendly matches in the United States as an opportunity to further experiment with new tactics and strategies ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Hong and nine members of his 26-man squad left Korea for the U.S. on Monday, with the 17 remaining players, all of them based in foreign leagues, set to join the national team later this week. The Taegeuk Warriors will first play the home team U.S. at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, at 5 p.m. Saturday (local time), or 6 a.m. Sunday (Korean time). Then they will travel to Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee, to take on Mexico at 8 p.m. Sept. 9 (local time), or 10 a.m. Sept. 10 (Korean time). Korea is No. 23 in the current FIFA rankings, with Mexico at No. 13 and the U.S. at No. 15. "With about 10 months left until the World Cup, every match from here and on will be important for us," Hong told reporters at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, before boarding his flight. "Results are obviously important, but we also want to keep experimen

KBO postseason hopefuls face busy week with makeup games on horizon

Trying to hold on to their postseason hopes, a trio of clubs will face a full slate this week in South Korean baseball with makeup games coming up. Starting Tuesday, teams in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) will no longer play two sets of three games per week. They will spend the rest of September, the final month of the regular season, playing games that had been canceled due to inclement weather from earlier in the season. This will leave some teams with odd off days this week. The league-leading LG Twins, for instance, will play Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. However, three teams in the thick of a postseason race — the SSG Landers, the NC Dinos and the Kia Tigers — will each play a full slate of six games, with plenty of travel thrown in. The Landers are in third place, but barely so. At 61-58-4 (wins-losses-ties), the Landers have a winning percentage of .5126, with the Lotte Giants (62-59-6) in fourth place at .5124. The Samsung Lions, who improved to 63-60-2 after completing a three-game sweep of the Hanwha Eagles over the weekend, are in fifth place with a winni

Seo Seung-jae, Kim Won-ho win men's doubles title at badminton worlds

Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho have claimed their first men's doubles title together at the badminton world championships in Paris. Seo and Kim defeated the Chinese duo of Chen Boyang and Liu Yi 21-17, 21-12, in the men's doubles final of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships at Adidas Arena in the French capital Sunday (local time). Seo and Kim came in ranked No. 1 in the BWF men's doubles rankings, while Chen and Liu were No. 11. Seo won the previous world title in Denmark in 2023 with a different partner, Kang Min-hyuk. Seo reunited with Kim at the start of this season, having previously played with him from 2017 to 2018. The South Korean duo had won five titles on the BWF World Tour circuit in 2025 before teaming up for the world title in Paris. Seo and Kim were once rivals in the mixed doubles. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kim and his partner Jeong Na-eun defeated Seo and Chae Yu-jung in the mixed doubles semifinals, en route to winning silver. Seo and Kim overcame some early pressure from their Chinese foes in the final. They trailed 9-5 and then 17-13, before reelin

Son Heung-min says 'can't wait' for LAFC home debut

Having appeared in three consecutive away matches for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) to begin his career in America, Son Heung-min is now itching to finally take the field at home. "The first home game after a month that felt like a year, I can't wait," Son said in a media availability at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, Friday (local time). LAFC will host San Diego FC there at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, or 11:45 a.m. Monday in South Korean time, for Son's first match at home since signing with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club earlier this month. "The fans will be really, really good and the stadium will be packed so (I) can't wait to be on the pitch again," Son added. LAFC have gone undefeated in their three matches with Son in tow, with a win and two draws. Son picked up an assist in a 2-0 win over New England Revolution on Aug. 16 in his second match, and netted his first goal for LAFC in a 1-1 draw against FC Dallas seven days later. "It was tough, three away trips, and I think it was perfect time to make MLS debut — three weeks, the hardest away trips — so it's been excellent," he said. "

Jose Mourinho sacked as Fenerbahce head coach

Jose Mourinho has been sacked as head coach of Fenerbahce. The 62-year-old’s departure comes two days after the Turkish club failed to qualify for the Champions League league phase following defeat to Benfica in the play-off round. Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager Mourinho was appointed to the role ahead of the 2024-25 season. Fenerbahce finished second in the Super Lig last term, 11 points adrift of rivals Galatasaray. “We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho,” read a club statement. “We thank him for his efforts for our team and wish him success in his future career.” The news comes a day after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who replaced Mourinho as United manager in 2018, was sacked by Fener’s Super Lig rivals Besiktas. Mourinho joined Fenerbahce less than six months after being dismissed by Italian club Roma, having also previously managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. His tenure was punctuated by controversy. Galatasaray said they would “initiate criminal proceedings” against Mourinho after accusing him of making “racist statements” following a goa

Injured midfielder Hwang In-beom removed from nat'l team roster ahead of friendlies in US

Feyenoord midfielder Hwang In-beom will not be available to play for Korea in two upcoming friendly matches in the United States due to a calf injury. The Korea Football Association said Friday that Seo Min-woo of Gangwon FC has been called up as his replacement. Hwang suffered a calf muscle injury while playing for his Dutch club on Aug. 17 and was substituted at halftime. His absence is seen as a significant setback for coach Hong Myung-bo as Hwang has been a key figure in the midfield. Seo, 27, returns to the national team after making his senior international debut at the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Football Championship in July. He first appeared as a substitute against China and later started matches against Hong Kong and Japan. In the United States, Seo will vie for a starting role, alongside midfielders Park Yong-woo, Paik Seung-ho, Park Jin-seop, Kim Jin-gyu, and Jens Castrop. The national team will depart from Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, on Monday to face the U.S. on Sept. 7 and Mexico on Sept. 10.

Alcaraz exorcises second-round demons, Djokovic recovers from slow start at US Open

Carlos Alcaraz demolished Mattia Bellucci to banish memories of last year's shock early exit, while Novak Djokovic shook off a sluggish start to reach the third round on Wednesday and stay on course for a potential semifinal showdown with the Spaniard. Alcaraz lost to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round last year and while he made no mistake this time around he admitted that the stunning straight-sets defeat by the Dutchman had left a mark. "If I'm honest, I thought about last year when I stepped on the court," the 2022 champion said. "Some bad thoughts. I was nervous about it, like thinking, okay, I don't want to do the same thing as I did last year, losing in the second round." Despite the nerves Alcaraz unleashed 32 winners and won 86% of his first serve points in a clinical 96-minute, 6-1 6-0 6-3 demolition job that sets up a third-round match with another Italian, Luciano Darderi. Djokovic's path proved a bit bumpier, the 24-time major winner dropping the opening set before finding his rhythm to beat American qualifier Zachary Svajda 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3 6-1. The Serbian's 14 unfor

Teenagers shining for Liverpool and Arsenal ahead of meeting of Premier League title rivals

A 15-year-old still on summer vacation from school won a penalty for Arsenal on his Premier League debut. A 16-year-old scored a last-gasp winner for Liverpool in his first match in the top division. Kids are being given a chance by England's top teams at the start of this season — and they are making the most of the opportunity. Now Max Dowman and Rio Ngumoha might be going head-to-head in the biggest match so far in the Premier League. The highlight of the third round of games this weekend sees Arsenal travel to Liverpool on Sunday for a meeting between two teams who are on a maximum six points and are likely to be battling for the title. What also links the two powerhouse teams is their trust in young talent. At 15 years and 235 days, Dowman became the second-youngest player to feature in the Premier League when he entered as a substitute for Arsenal in a 5-0 win over Leeds on Saturday. He showed excellent technical skills and dribbling ability, earning a late penalty that was converted for the final goal. Four days before his 17th birthday, Ngumoha made his senior Liverpool debut whe
