Seoul woman arrested after 4,654 prank calls to police

Police in southern Seoul have arrested a 43-year-old woman for making thousands of prank calls to emergency call centers, which she apparently made while under the influence of alcohol. The woman surnamed Song made 4,654 prank calls to emergency 112 call centers between January 2010 and July 2014, according to the Dobong Police Station. Once she got an operator on the line, she pulled pranks such as saying she was suicidal or had found a dead body. The woman claimed she was drunk when she made the calls, Yonhap News Agency reported. Prank callers to police stations face fines of up to 100,000 won ($94.80). Penalties for habitual pranksters ­ or those whose calls inflict damage ­ can be stiffer, including jail time.

Rock icon Seo Tae-ji’s one-on-one interview with journalist Sohn Seok-hee on Monday provided a bump in ratings for JTBC’s evening interview segment “News Room.”   The interview garnered a rating of over two percent, higher than last week’s 1.5 percent. The conversation delved into Seo’s musical career rather than his private life. This contrasted with his earlier appearance on KBS talk show “Happy Together,” which disappointed some viewers for failing to touch on substantive subjects.  Sohn may have had this in mind during his own interview, keeping the singer engaged with humor while extracting interesting answers.  After five years of hiatus, Seo recently released his ninth studio album “Quiet Night.”

Company infringed French man's portrait rights

A person’s portrait rights – the right to control the commercial use of his or her own image – doesn’t only pertain to one’s face, but the entire body, a court ruled Sunday. The Seoul Central District Court ordered an online education company to pay a French man one million won ($942) for using a photograph of his body – but not his face – in an advertisement. In 2012, the company downloaded a photo of the man, edited it to replace his head with a different person’s, and then published the advertisement.  The court said that although the man’s face was not shown, his T-shirt, which prominently featured the word “foreigner” in Korean, was enough for people to recognize him.

One in four rape victims in Seoul is a teen

One in four victims of rape in Seoul is a teenager, data showed Monday, suggesting that teens continue to be a significant target of rapists. According to National Police Agency (NPA) statistics, a total of 6,364 teenagers were victims of reported rapes between 2011, accounting for 26 percent of all rapes during the time period. This year alone, teen victims accounted for 23 percent, or 1,044 out of a total 4,446 victims. The percentage has been similar in the last four years, reaching 26 percent in 2011, 30 percent in 2012 and 25 percent in 2013. Out of 31 police stations in Seoul, Gwanak-gu reported the most teen rape cases with 362 cases. It was followed by Gangseo-gu (344 counts) and Gwangjin-gu (333 counts). The statistics were submitted by the NPA to New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) Rep. Jin Sun-mi.
