N. Korea launches odd new tourism website

/ Yonhap North Korea launched a new webpage titled “DPRK Today” on Monday, introducing various tourist attractions in the nation and the activities of its leader Kim Jong-un.But the site already has many observers scratching their heads because it includes photos altered with odd computer graphics such as fluorescent sunflowers.Pictures of Kim's giant construction projects such as the Munsu Water Park are adorned with added rays of light to highlight its "magnificence.”Yonhap News Agency reported that the purpose of the site is to "attract foreign tourists," despite the fact that its launch comes amid the North's state ban on foreign tourists over Ebola fears.The website is available only in the Korean language. As of Thursday it was accessible from the South Korean servers, whereas other North Korean sites are typically blocked by authorities.

IU honors Shin Hae-chul at music awards

/ Korea Times fileSinger IU commemorated late rocker Shin Hae-chul, who died in late October, by singing one of his best-known songs “Fly, Chick!” at the  2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards at the Asia World-Expo Arena in Hong Kong on Wednesday. “This year, I had one special memory that I will never be able to forget,” said IU, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, explained that she has “embraced the fond memories” of the singer by revisiting his records.  “I’ll let you listen to a song from my memory that will last forever,” she said before singing Shin’s tune.   Released in 1994 by the band N.EX.T, for which Shin was lead singer, Fly, Chick! is a song about a child whose pet chick dies. It is said to showcase Shin’s emotion and pathos.  Shin fell into a coma days after undergoing surgery for intestinal adhesions, and died on Oct. 27.

Actress Kang So-ra / Courtesy of TwitterThe Korean actress who gained fame through her lead role in the popular series "Misaeng” wore a dress at an awards ceremony that made her name the most searched keyword on Naver on Thursday.Kang So-ra, 24, wore an off-the-shoulder lace dress with long sleeves at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong on Wednesday, showing off not just her slim figure but also that a low-priced dress can have class.Netizens found Kang's dress on the website of H&M, a specialty retailer of private label apparel (SPA), known for trendy collections sold at affordable prices.Her $30 dress received much attention online after Kang spoke in four languages when announcing the winner of the best male and female artist awards.Various news outlets, including the Chosun Ilbo said Kang had “turned a low-priced dress into a luxury item" and praised the actress for her frugal decision.

Singer Joanne dies after car crash

Korean singer Joanne Lee has died at after a car accident that occurred in Los Angeles last month, Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday. The 26-year-old artist was reported to have been in a coma after the car crashed on November 26. The news was confirmed by a close member of the family. After fighting for her life for almost a week, the singer died on Tuesday. Details of the accident were not immediately available. Legally named Lee Yeon-ji, Joanne was once known as “The second BoA,” in reference to recording artist BoA. Lee had attempted to get back in the K-pop game through audition program “Super Star K4” two years ago. Lee Seung-hyun, Joanne's brother and an actor based in China, took to his Weibo account in memory of his sister. "It was an amazing time being your brother for 26 years, thank you," he wrote Wednesday. "I love you, always." Joanne's debut album "First Love" was released in 2001. The title track as well as the songs "A Sunny Day" and "Innocent" became hits.

Driver crashes car, scuffles with police after fight with boyfriend

/ Courtesy of YouTubeAn upset woman ignored a police order to stop her car, then crashed it, and then scuffled with police after refusing to get out.The incident happened in front of the Anglican Church of Korea in Jeong-dong, central Seoul at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.The woman, 32, refused to open the door of her white Volkswagen Beetle. She then drove off at high speed, but crashed after travelling only 100 meters. Police then broke a window to gain access.But the woman still refused to get out, although she eventually did so.A Huffington Post Korea reporter filmed  the incident. Reports said the woman had fought with her boyfriend shortly before the incident.Seoul Namdaemun Police sent the woman home after she explained she was extremely upset.A police official was quoted as saying the woman would be charged with obstructing justice.
