Fourth grader's unification song captures hearts

An elementary school student has composed a song with his father that has been receiving much attention from Korean netizens online, due to its innocent take on the division of the Korean Peninsula. The song, "Eight Provinces of Korea”_ written by a fourth grader at Jecheon Elementary School who goes by the initial "J" _ reflects the boy's wish for the divided nation to reunite. The lyrics are straight from his personal journal. "I want to walk hand in hand with my mom and dad and visit Mt. Geumgang," the boy sings. "If the two Koreas unite, our nation will always win everything like figure skater Kim Yu-na. "If only we could ride the train and go straight to Sinuiju in North Korea." The boy’s father, Lee Duk-su, told The Korea Times that his son has always had a keen interest in inter-Korean relations. "One day, he just came home and started writing in his diary how he didn't want to do his homework, and then I saw what he was writing," Lee explained. "The lyrics reflected his interest in current affairs and the importance of our identity, which was what he learned throu

President in crisis

President Park Geun-hye appears beleaguered by what looks to be a power struggle between her trusted confidants and her younger brother Park Ji-man. Judging by the level of acrimony brought into the open following the leak of Cheong Wa Dae’s internal documents, Park runs the risk of sustaining serious damage to her presidency. Only 22 months into the job, it’s conceivable she could now be forced to run out the next three years in office as a lame-duck leader. Whether or not the President can recover will come down to if she can limit the damage this scandal is causing and bounce back strongly. It is pivotal for her to let go of her most trusted inner-circle members at Cheong Wa Dae, as well as, of course, Jeong Yun-hoe. Jeong has been at the center of the “memogate” scandal and the root cause of most of the President’s current woes. The question now is: can she do what is needed and prove she warrants the highest office in the nation? So far, President Park has insisted on sticking to her way of doing things, even under
