British Embassy hosts charity night

By Alan Green The British Embassy in Seoul will hold its annual BBC Children in Need quiz and raffle on Nov. 4. This year’s event will also have a Halloween theme. It will be held at the embassy’s Broughton’s Bar and the night will feature a family quiz, raffle, auction and lots of fun games for children. BBC Children in Need was launched in the United Kingdom in 1980 and the charity appeal has been held every year since, raising over 500 million pounds. The charity’s vision is that every child has a childhood which is safe, happy and secure and allows them a chance to reach their potential. It gives grants to projects which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged. Over the past three years this night, the British Embassy has raised over 15 million won for children's charities in the United Kingdom and Korea, donating to the Myongdo Services for Children with Disabilities and the SungRoWon Orphanage. The aim of this event is to lift the combined total to over 20 million won. This year, 50 percent of the money raised will go to the Hwasung Center in

Hear Saycet perform in Seoul

By Agnes Yu Described as music that invites you to daydream or is perfect accompaniment on a contemplative walk, Saycet is performing here in Seoul, for one concert only on Friday at Rolling Hall in Hongdae at 8 p.m. and this is made possible through the efforts of Broken Teeth. The atmospheric tunes of Saycet are the creation of Pierre LeFeuvre, a French composer who earned notable acclaim for his first solo album, One Day at Home, in 2006. The first track, Chromatic Bird effectively lures the listener who is easily swept away by each following song. LeFeuvre’s arrangements are characterized by electronic beats and effects, a range of rhythmic sounds and soothing melodies. The music lends hip ambiance to any area, even inside your head. The work of the inspiring French artist is said to be, ``Both fleecy and tense, elusive and introspective, the songs that compose One Day At Home sublimate melancholy and solitude.’’ It is music akin to Tsewer Beta, the Dutch producer and DJ, as well as reminiscent of Danish artist Trentemoller. Working in a year-long collaboration with

UK theater to present Oscar Wilde piece in Seoul

By John Redmond Cut Glass Theatre, a brand new English theater company in Seoul will stage one of Oscar Wilde’s most popular pieces, “The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People,” at Moon Light in Itaewon from Nov. 4 to 13. The newly formed company proudly presents their inaugural production of Wilde's quintessential comedy that is a celebration of Victorian ideals, with great attention paid to the beautiful detail of style, dress, manners, and speech of the period. Oscar Wilde was an Irish writer and poet who became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. The play is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways “The light and tripping text of this comedy of manners moves like music and will leave the audience giddy and gasping for breath
