Singer and Actors To Receive Army Chief of Staff Award

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Singers Psy, Sung Si-kyung, Kang Ta and actor Yang Dong-kun will receive the Army Chief of Staff Award for their dedication during military service, according to the Republic of Korea Army Tuesday. Psy, 31, and Sung, 30, were recognized for their participation in various military events, including music performances and also for lifting fellow soldiers' spirits. Kang Ta, Yang, Hong Dong-myung and Lee Hyun-gyun were given the honors for appearing in the military musical ``MINE'' and promoting the army. The Army added that specific details such as the date and location have not been confirmed. The award is especially meaningful for Psy, a popular rap singer, who returned to the military after serving two years from 2003 to 2005. The singer had been accused of neglecting his duties, and was called up for the military again last year. He will be discharged on Saturday. Former Sungkyunkwan University President Dies

By Kim Rahn Staff Reporter Chang Eul-byung, a former Sungkyunkwan University president and lawmaker, passed away Sunday from a chronic disease. He was 76. Born in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, in 1933, he graduated from the school's politics department in 1959 with a doctorate in politics. He gave lectures at the school about Korean politics and political communications from 1961, but was dismissed in 1980 for leading a movement against the Chun Doo-hwan military junta's martial law. Chang was reinstated in 1984, and led the university as president for five years from 1991. Afterward, he advanced into the political arena, becoming a lawmaker in 1996. He held positions such as co-head of the Democratic Party and vice head of the National Congress of New Politics. He received several academic awards for his contribution to political science. The scholar was also the head of the Academy of Korean Studies between 2001 and 2004. Chang is survived by his wife, son and three daughters. Actor Yoo to Receive Seoul Womens Prize

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Actor Yoo Ji-tae, 34, will receive the Seoul Women's Prize along with five others today at City Hall, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government Sunday. The grand prize will be given to Song Yong-sun, 88, the director of the Korea Women's Association, for her dedication in bringing women to actively participate in social issues and fighting for women's rights over the last 40 years. Yoo, who is the first male winner, will receive the honor for participating as a member of the ``100 Supporters,'' a support group that helps women suffering from domestic violence. ``I realized that emotional pain could be much greater and more serious than physical pain. The fact that violence can be transmitted from generation to generation breaks my heart,'' he said about his support of the group. Park, Min Win Membership of Spanish Royal Academy

By Park Si-soo Staff Reporter The Royal Spanish Academy awarded a lifelong membership to Park Chul, president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), and professor Min Yong-tae of Korea University in recognition of their contribution to the development of the Spanish language in South Korea, HUFS said Thursday. Their appointment was unanimously endorsed during a general meeting of the academy last week, the school said. Park, 60, served as an executive of the International Cervantes Association in 2004 and hosted its annual meeting in Seoul. Professor Min, 66, known as an expert in Spanish literature, has published six collections of poems in Spanish.

IMO Recognizes Korean Captains as Brave Seamen

By Kim Rahn Staff Reporter The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has acknowledged two Korean captains for acts of bravery at sea. It selected captain Cha Sanggeun of STX ACE 7 and captain Kim Shin-ho of KMTC Port Kelang as two of 17 recipients of the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea at the 102nd Council in London, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Thursday. The award is given to those performing exceptionally brave acts and displaying outstanding courage at the risk of losing their own life in attempting to save lives at sea or prevent damage to the marine environment.

Yoon Chairs Rotary Int’l Seoul Division

The inauguration ceremony took place at Grand Hyatt Seoul with 700 guests attending, including Lee Dong-kun, ex-chairman of Rotary International. A graduate of Seoul National University, Yoon worked as the top executive of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and vice chairman of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. Currently, he is chairman of Jinsung T.E.C., a heavy equipment producer. Rotary International is a nonprofit, voluntary organization that has 1.2 million members worldwide. Late Film Director Yu to Get National Order of Culture Merit

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Master director Yu Hyeon-mok passed away Sunday due to a combination of cerebral infarction and diabetes during treatment at Dongguk University Hospital in Ilsan, Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. He was 84. The veteran filmmaker is to posthumously receive the Geum-Gwan Order of Culture Merit, the highest honor bestowed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, it was announced Monday. Born in Sariwon, Bongsan-gun, Hwanghae Island (now part of North Korea) in 1925, Yu attended Whimoon High School and studied Korean literature at Dongguk University. He debuted in 1956 with ``The Crossroads'' and rose to prominence as one of South Korea's key neo-realist auteurs of the post-war period, alongside Shin Sang-ok (1926-2006), Kim Ki-young (1919-1998) and Kim Soo-young (1929-). Actor Kim Dies in Motorcycle Accident

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Actor Kim Tae-ho died in a motorcycle accident Thursday morning. He was 30. The former model was driving toward Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, when he crashed into a truck that was parked near the road. ``We were heading to Chuncheon to have lunch after leaving Seoul and stopping by the Soyang Dam,'' his fellow motorcycle club members told the police. According to police, Kim's driving license was revoked due to penalty points until Aug. 1. Kim, who started out as a model and moved on to become an actor, appeared in the movie ``Sex is Zero 2'' and dramas ``You Are Not Alone'' (2004, SBS) and ``Blue Fish'' (2007, SBS). Pioneer Opera Singer Oh Dies at 84

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter South Korea's pioneer opera singer, Oh Hyun-myung, passed away Wednesday evening due to chronic disease. He was 84. Oh is recognized for partaking in the development of the local arts scene and education while serving as assistant principal at Seoul Arts High School and dean of the College of Music at Hanyang University. Born in Manchuria, China on Oct. 10, 1924, Oh graduated from Seoul National University in 1948. The same year, he starred in the country's first Western opera production ``La Traviata.'' He has appeared in 60 operas and directed more than 50 works. He also headed the National Opera of Korea from 1964 to 1982. Oh was particularly noted for his love of ``gagok'' or local folk songs. Dubbed ``gagok ambassador,'' he featured gagok-only programs in his post-1960s recitals. Korean Becomes Oceanography Group Vice Chairperson

By Kim Rahn Staff Reporter A Korean researcher has become the vice chairperson of a U.N. oceanography affiliate. Byun Sang-kyung, researcher at the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI), was one of five vice chairpersons elected to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) at the 25th assembly session held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris Tuesday. Byun, 59, will hold the post for two years. Korea has been an executive council member since 1993. ``We expect the election will help the country gain international support in marine diplomacy in issues such as the naming of the East Sea and territorial dispute over Dokdo. It will also help Yeosu Expo 2012 attract more attention,'' an official at the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said.
