Chang Eul-byung, a former Sungkyunkwan University president and lawmaker, passed away Sunday from a chronic disease. He was 76.
Born in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, in 1933, he graduated from the school's politics department in 1959 with a doctorate in politics.
He gave lectures at the school about Korean politics and political communications from 1961, but was dismissed in 1980 for leading a movement against the Chun Doo-hwan military junta's martial law.
Chang was reinstated in 1984, and led the university as president for five years from 1991. Afterward, he advanced into the political arena, becoming a lawmaker in 1996. He held positions such as co-head of the Democratic Party and vice head of the National Congress of New Politics.
He received several academic awards for his contribution to political science. The scholar was also the head of the Academy of Korean Studies between 2001 and 2004.
Chang is survived by his wife, son and three daughters. A memorial service is being held at Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul from 9 a.m. Wednesday. He will be buried at a cemetery in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. For more information on the service, call (02) 3410-6909.
