Lee Oi-soo Chosen as Most Popular Novelist

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Lee Oi-soo is Korea's favorite novelist, according to Gallup Korea. A survey to celebrate the research firm's 35th anniversary saw 13.5 percent choose the 62-year-old Lee as their favorite, the company said Tuesday. A total of 1,704 people, older than 13, participated in the survey. Gallup Korea reported that Lee, who was named the fifth favorite in 2004, topped the list thanks to his best selling novels and essays, not to mention his effort to try to communicate with the younger generation via television and the Internet. The second favorite was the late Park Kyung-ni, who wrote the famous ``Land'' (Toji), followed by Gong Ji-young, the writer who became popular with works such as ``My Sweet Home,'' and recently ``Dogani.'' Yi Mun-yeol, who made No. 1 in 2004, finished in fourth place with 3.3. percent, while Hwang Suk-young followed with 2.3 percent. ``There were surprisingly a lot of people who didn't have an answer when asked who their favorite novelist was. Only four out of 10 were able to answer their favorite, just like

Choshinsung Makes Debut in Japan

By Ines Min Contributing Writer The boy band Choshinsung will debut their new, image-revolutionary single in Japan, with fellow South Korean groups TVXQ, SS501 and Big Bang this September. The band announced the plan during their last concert at music venue Shibuya O-East in Tokyo, at the end of a three-city tour in Japan. They revealed their decision to return to Japan after playing their older hits to cheering fans. The band's new Japanese debut was facilitated through Big Bang, who has previously released records in the country through Universal Music. The song, ``Superstar-Reborn,'' is a re-make of an older single. Group leader Yun Hak-eun said, ``until now, all of our songs have had a bright, light-hearted image,'' referring to the band's older love ballads. ``Please forget what we were like before now,'' he added. ``Wait to see a whole new Choshinsung.'' The band's name means ``supernova'' in Korean and the group rose to popularity in 2007. They distinguish themselves from other boy bands by donning only formal attire. Their past hits include ``Romance'

Wonkwang University to Open Smile Clinic

By Ines Min Contributing Writer Wonkwang University will open up a Smile Clinic in August. The facility will develop a program that will help find the best-fitting smile for individuals, said Dong Jin-keun, a professor in the dentistry school of the southwestern Iksan-based university. ``In ancient times, a good smile gave off an image of self-confidence and made others feel comfortable, securing a high social status for the family,'' Dong said. ``It is an expression of a person's confidence and consideration, so don't use it sparingly,'' the professor said. Practicing smiling can lead to visible improvements, with as little as three minutes in front of a mirror every morning being effective. Practicing both small and big smiles are recommended, Dong said. ``Smile for the camera,'' has a whole new meaning, thanks to a recent study the International Journal of Prosthodontics published in June. The study compares the structural differences of Caucasian and Korean smiles and was co-authored by Dong, and S.F. Rosenstiel, a professor from Ohio State University. The

Cyber University Prof. Named NHRC Chairman

By Na Jeong-ju, Park Si-soo Staff Reporters Hyun Byung-chul, president of Hanyang Cyber University, has been named the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), sources at Cheong Wa Dae and the NHRC confirmed Thursday. The government said Hyun was the right man to make South Korea better at protecting human rights, but human right activists were skeptical, citing a lack of knowledge and experience. The appointment came nearly a week after former Chairman Ahn Kyong-hwan resigned four months before the end of his term in protest of the Lee Myung-bak administration's downsizing of the organization. ``Hyun has shown great performances in managing organizations fairly and stably,'' a presidential spokesman said. ``We believe he will largely contribute to stabilizing operations by resolving conflicting issues in a peaceful fashion.'' The 65-year-old chairman is said to be politically neutral with no strong political ties to President Lee. He is reportedly a close aide to Kim Chong-yang, president of Hanyang University.
