Actor Lee Jun-ki in Japanese Spotlight

By Ines Min Contributing Writer Actor-turned-singer Lee Jun-ki is making a return to center stage in Japan with concerts in Kobe and Yokohama on July 18 and 19. The event will commemorate the re-opening of his fan club, Splendor. Lee previously recorded and released music in 2006, but his new single in April was his first time back on the music scene. Another EP is due later this year and the undying love of his fans has thrust him back into the public eye. The 27-year-old gained widespread fame for his role as an androgynous court jester in the film ``The King and the Clown." Although he has appeared in numerous films, TV dramas and commercials since his surge in popularity, Lee's subsequent endeavors failed to garner as much acclaim in Korea as his original role. Lee continues to have large fan bases in other Asian countries, contributing to a wave of cultural exchange called ``hallyu,'' the term used to describe the welcome of Korean pop culture in Japan, China and others countries. He was the representative for last year's Seoul Hallyu Festival. In an inte

Koreans Shine in Magic Olympics

By Ines Min Contributing Writer Magic fever has reached South Korea. Last week, three Koreans were placed among the top six finalists at the World Magic Olympics, hosted by the International Brotherhood of Magicians in Nashville, Tenn. Ryu Hyun-min won an award for his sleight-of-hand abilities in a segment analyzing close-up performances. In his signature trick, Ryu places three single cards on a table, puts them into an empty envelope, then opens it to reveal dozens of cards pouring onto the stage. Most subtleties are lost when translated through a television screen, so a live performance in front of judges requires great precision. Kim Hyeong-jun, a programmer for the International Busan Magic Festival, said that the younger generation of Korean magicians is developing a new, independent technique for sleight-of-hand. In the past three years, three South Koreans have won the award for close-up performances in international competitions. ``It distinguishes them from other magicians in the world," Kim said. Lee Jae-min won the People's Choice award at this year

Referring to his second service, Psy said that he had learned a lot indeed. ``For the past two years, I think I went through a lot as a person. Beauty Queen Becomes Internet Phenomenon

By Ines Min Contributing Writer Kim Joo-ri, crowned Miss Korea 2009 Wednesday, has become the latest Internet phenomenon, garnering the most hits on the search engine Web site Naver and sparking a surge of fan-based communities. Her Web site attracted more than 12,000 new visitors only a day after the pageant ended. Fans are proclaiming Kim, a graduate of the Russian Bolshoi Ballet Academy, to be the perfect, overachieving daughter that all mothers wish they could claim as their own. ``Eom-chin-ttal,'' or ``mother's friend's daughter,'' is a term used to describe a prodigious child who can do no wrong ― a child who is beautiful, intelligent and kind-hearted. It is typical in Korean culture for mothers to boast about the many accomplishments of their children in an attempt to outdo their friends and neighbors. But mothers will come home to scold their own children into motivation by relaying tales of how others are achieving more. The ``eom-chin-ttal'' is the individual who sets the standard for all comparisons ― the best of the best, the one a mother is always com

Cancer-Fighting Housewives Climb Mont Blanc

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Even to young mountaineers, climbing Mont Blanc is more than a simple challenge ― it is high, tough and most of all, cold, and very few people have conquered it. But to 72-year-old Hwang Gook-hee, it was just another mission that she had to accomplish. Hwang and 56 year-old Kim Young-hee, both survivors of cancer, reached the top of the 4,810 meters mountain, Monday (local time). Kim said things were tough, but she feels healthier than ever. ``I think the mountains gave me back the energy and goal to live,'' she said to the local Donga Ilbo newspaper. Mont Blanc was a tough climb. ``I understand that the real fight is within yourself. You have to overcome all the problems and inner conflicts. I thought I was a great person but the mountain proved how humble a woman I am,'' Hwang said. The two housewives' lives came to a critical point when Hwang was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 53, and Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer at 47, which was later followed by a relapse. They had surgery, but refused to have all the chemotherapy
