Will Homeplus liquidation decision be postponed again?

Homeplus has submitted an amended rehabilitation plan just three days before a court deadline, but its failure to secure a crucial 200 billion won ($129 million) capital injection is increasing uncertainty over whether the troubled retailer will face liquidation, industry sources said Wednesday. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court will now assess the feasibility of the revised proposal to determine whether to continue with rescue proceedings or dissolve the company. Although the current deadline expires this Friday, expectations are rising that the court will defer the date once more to review the new submission. The country’s second-largest retail chain, controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners, filed for corporate rehabilitation on March 4 last year after struggling with financial difficulties and facing credit rating downgrades. The original deadline for court approval of its rehabilitation plan was March 4 this year, but the court first extended it to May 4 before granting an additional extension until this Friday. Naver Map launches another BE LOCAL campaign, expands to Busan, Gyeongju

Naver is launching a second round of the BE LOCAL campaign with the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), Wednesday through Dec. 15, to introduce Korea’s popular destinations to foreign visitors. The campaign, which first ran for a month in April, offers foreign tourists real Korean local experiences by suggesting trending restaurants, cafes, shopping areas and cultural spaces on Naver Map. The recommended places include frequently saved spots among the platform’s users in their 20s and 30s, as well as long-established local restaurants. For the second round, the campaign will expand from Seoul to include the southeastern city of Busan and Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, which are expected to welcome more foreign guests to upcoming major international events such as the Busan International Film Festival this month and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in October. Naver and KTO will also scale up the campaign benefits, handing out discount coupons for selected restaurants, cafes and cultural venues, as well as for express bus tickets and car rental services. “Naver Map is a comp

No longer owner, Lotte Group still faces brand risk from Lotte Card hacking

The Lotte Card hacking incident, which may have compromised the personal information of millions of customers, has raised concerns that it could inadvertently damage Lotte Group’s overall brand image, as many consumers still perceive the card issuer as part of the group, industry officials said Wednesday. In reality, Lotte Card’s largest shareholder is private equity firm MBK Partners, and the company has had no management ties with Lotte Group since it was sold in 2019. Nevertheless, the continued use of the Lotte brand name has left Lotte Group bearing the burden of potential reputational damage, they said. Lotte Card reported the hacking incident to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) on Aug. 31. The FSS began an on-site inspection of the case on Sept. 2, which is now in its final stage, with results expected to be released as early as this week. Initially, Lotte Card estimated the scale of the hacking incident at about 1.7 gigabytes of leaked data. However, subsequent on-site inspections suggest the breach was far more extensive. The number of victims, once thought to be limi

Hyundai Motor Group unveils cutting-edge wireless tech for smart factories

Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled its cutting-edge wireless technology used for the carmaker’s smart factory, the company said Wednesday. At Hyundai Motor and Kia's production facilities in Korea and United States, an array of high-tech, wireless-enabled robots — including automated guided vehicles, autonomous mobile robots for logistics and even Boston Dynamics’ hazard-detecting robot dog Spot — play a central role in the manufacturing process. These robots do not follow preset paths; they must respond in real time to rapidly changing environments. To ensure a high level of responsiveness and precision, a robust and stable wireless communication infrastructure is essential. In recognition of the increasing sophistication and scale of robotic operations in their plants, Hyundai Motor and Kia have adopted next-generation wireless technologies to keep pace with evolving production demands. Notably, the companies have developed the world’s first integrated wireless communication terminal capable of simultaneously processing Wi-Fi 6 and private 5G (P-5G) networks. Patents for the tec

The KCCI and the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation (KUSAF) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to support the employment of USFK veterans and promote Korea-U.S. cooperation during a ceremony at the KCCI headquarters in Seoul. Planned investment entity for southeastern region triggers interagency tensions

Despite initiating steps to launch a policy finance institution called "southeast investment corporation" in Busan, the government is facing stalled progress due to clashing institutional interests, industry officials said Wednesday. At a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Oceans and Fisheries Minister Chun Jae-soo told President Lee Jae Myung that consensus had been reached on moving forward with the southeast investment corporation rather than the investment bank Lee had pledged during his campaign. "If we were to establish it as a bank, it would be difficult to secure funding quickly and stably. So we've decided to issue corporate bonds instead to meet the original purpose," Chun said, adding that the bank would be subject to more stringent financial regulations. After being briefed, Lee said, "Let's do that, then." Establishing a new investment bank in Busan was one of Lee's campaign pledges, aimed at reviving industrial competitiveness in South Gyeongsang Province. The proposal comes amid internal resistance and continued debate over relocating the Korea Development Bank (KDB). Busan has long

Korean Air, Boeing forge strategic partnership for predictive MRO operations

Korean Air said Wednesday it has signed a strategic partnership with Boeing to strengthen cooperation in predictive aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) that will help enhance its fleet reliability and operational efficiency. A partnership signing ceremony was held at the MRO Asia-Pacific 2025 Conference in Singapore, marking a new phase in the carrier's efforts to modernize maintenance operations. Korean Air established a dedicated predictive maintenance team in August 2023 and has since deployed an in-house operational solution. The partnership will focus on using fleetwide operational data to forecast component health, helping the airline improve operational readiness, maximize aircraft availability, and reduce maintenance costs and flight disruptions. "Korean Air has made substantial progress in enhancing fleet reliability through our smart MRO strategy, specifically by leveraging predictive maintenance," said Jung Chang-woo, senior vice president and head of maintenance and engineering at Korean Air.
