Will Homeplus liquidation decision be postponed again?

Homeplus has submitted an amended rehabilitation plan just three days before a court deadline, but its failure to secure a crucial 200 billion won ($129 million) capital injection is increasing uncertainty over whether the troubled retailer will face liquidation, industry sources said Wednesday. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court will now assess the feasibility of the revised proposal to determine whether to continue with rescue proceedings or dissolve the company. Although the current deadline expires this Friday, expectations are rising that the court will defer the date once more to review the new submission. The country’s second-largest retail chain, controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners, filed for corporate rehabilitation on March 4 last year after struggling with financial difficulties and facing credit rating downgrades. The original deadline for court approval of its rehabilitation plan was March 4 this year, but the court first extended it to May 4 before granting an additional extension until this Friday. Bankruptcy law dictates that a rehabilitation scheme must receive appr

Hyundai Motor to invest $56 bil. to refine eco-friendly portfolio

Hyundai Motor will make a large-scale investment worth $55.7 billion (77.3 trillion won) to refine its portfolio for eco-friendly vehicles and strengthen its global position as an advanced electrification powertrain maker, the carmaker said Thursday. Under the five-year investment plan which starts in 2026, the carmaker will place its strategic focus on diversifying its green car lineups, so it can achieve annual sales of 5.5 million vehicles by 2030. The strategy was unveiled during its first overseas CEO Investor Day in New York. The carmaker decided to hold this year’s event in the United States, in an apparent display of strong commitment to the market, as the Donald Trump administration is stepping up regulatory pressure on foreign carmakers. Hyundai Motor plans to overcome its recent earnings fall — triggered by a 25 percent tariff from the U.S. — by expanding its eco-friendly powertrains and launching more diverse cars in the global market. In 2027, the carmaker is scheduled to introduce its first extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). EREVs refer to vehicles utilizing hi

Hanwha Aerospace Co. is poised to sign an additional contract with Norway to supply 24 K9 self-propelled howitzers, defense industry sources said Thursday. The Korean defense giant is expected to finalize the agreement soon with the Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency, according to the sources. The K9 has since been adopted by a range of countries, including Turkey, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Egypt, India, Australia and Romania. Last month, Hanwha signed a $250 million deal with Vietnam to deliver 20 K9s, marking the howitzer's first export to Southeast Asia.

Korean retailer Shinsegae Group said Thursday its joint venture with Alibaba International has received regulatory approval to launch next month. The 50:50 joint company was cleared by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) based on self-correction measures related to customer data protection and information management, Shinsegae said in a press release. Will questions on KT payment scam be resolved after arrest of suspects?

The KT payment fraud issue seems far from resolved, even after suspects were arrested due to a series of unauthorized mobile payment fraud cases that targeted the company's users. The telecoms industry is closely watching whether the lingering questions over the unprecedented use of rogue cellular base stations, which alarmed the public, will be answered. According to KT on Thursday, a total of 362 users have been affected, with the accumulated damages totaling 240 million won ($173,000), both figures up from last week’s announcement. “Since blocking suspicious payment attempts on Sept. 5, there were no additional cases reported,” Koo Jae-hyung, head of KT's Network Technology Division, said during a press briefing at its headquarters in Seoul. “As we expanded investigations on all payment attempts before the block, the number of victims increased by 84 from the previous announcement, and the total damages grew by 70 million won to 240 million won.” The company also said the number of KT users whose personal information — including their international mobile subscriber identit

Leading conglomerates roll out massive recruitment drives

Major conglomerates, including Samsung, POSCO, HD Hyundai, SK and Hanwha, are launching a massive recruitment drive, signaling a rare hiring push with plans to bring on tens of thousands of new employees as they pivot to growth sectors and address the stagnating youth employment rate. Samsung has taken a bold step, announcing Thursday that it will hire 60,000 new workers over the next five years, or around 12,000 annually. The tech giant said the new positions will be concentrated in critical sectors such as semiconductors, biotechnology and artificial intelligence (AI), areas that are positioned to be growth engines for the company. It will also expand internship programs that lead to full-time jobs for university students and bolster its long-running training initiatives, such as the Samsung Youth SW (Software) and AI Academy, which has trained more than 8,000 people since 2018 with a job placement rate of about 85 percent. Currently, 19 affiliates — including Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T and Samsung Biologics — are conducting companywide open recruitment for the second half of

Woori Financial Group enhances consumer protection amid regulatory drive

Woori Financial Group has upgraded its consumer protection department under the direct supervision of its chairman, in a move to strengthen financial consumer rights amid intensifying regulatory scrutiny, it said Thursday. The development followed emphasis on consumer protection by the heads of the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), prompted by a slew of personal data theft and mis-selling of products at financial entities. The newly established department will report directly to Chairman Yim Jong-yong, in a clear shift from the previous corporate governance model that had consumer protection oversight under its compliance division. The department will outline and execute group-wide policies, in addition to internal controls oversight. It will also manage and recommend best practices across subsidiaries. Yim presided over a meeting of a consumer protection council joined by chief consumer officers from the group’s 12 affiliates. They will monitor current practices and explore an employee evaluation framework based on consumer issues, in a step t

KEPCO discusses cooperation with US firms amid expansion of global nuclear energy market

The Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) said Thursday it has attended a nuclear energy conference in the United States and explored ways to expand its foothold in the American market through cooperation with local companies. KEPCO took part in the 2025 Nuclear Energy Conference & Expo (NECX) held in Atlanta last week, where it expressed its commitment to entering the U.S. nuclear energy market and discussed potential partnerships with major American firms, such as The Nuclear Company, for opportunities in the power plant business, according to the Korean company. The NECX organizers told KEPCO that it is one of the most trusted partners for the U.S. government in achieving its goal of quadrupling the country's nuclear power capacity to 400 gigawatts by 2050, KEPCO officials said. Following the conference, the Korean company said it held a joint workshop with Westinghouse to exchange their technological expertise and discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation for global nuclear energy projects. Last month, Seoul and Washington agreed to bolster bilateral cooperation in the nuclear energ

US states race to retain Korean investors after immigration raid

A growing number of U.S. state governors have reaffirmed the importance of Korean companies investing in their states. Their moves to court the Korean firms came after a massive immigration raid at HL-GA Battery’s Georgia factory on Sept. 4 and the subsequent weeklong detention of more than 300 Korean workers, which has prompted some firms to reconsider their planned investments in the U.S. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said Tuesday (local time) that the raid highlighted the need for reforms to the U.S. visa system. He made the remarks a day after the state issued a press release noting that Korea was among the top sources of international investment in his state, along with Japan and Canada. "That's not a problem that was just for Hyundai: a lot of companies across the country have dealt with that," Kemp said at the construction site of Rivian's new electric vehicle plant. The Republican governor previously defended Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which raided the construction site for the plant, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution. A day after the raid,
