Will Homeplus liquidation decision be postponed again?

Homeplus has submitted an amended rehabilitation plan just three days before a court deadline, but its failure to secure a crucial 200 billion won ($129 million) capital injection is increasing uncertainty over whether the troubled retailer will face liquidation, industry sources said Wednesday. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court will now assess the feasibility of the revised proposal to determine whether to continue with rescue proceedings or dissolve the company. Although the current deadline expires this Friday, expectations are rising that the court will defer the date once more to review the new submission. The country’s second-largest retail chain, controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners, filed for corporate rehabilitation on March 4 last year after struggling with financial difficulties and facing credit rating downgrades. The original deadline for court approval of its rehabilitation plan was March 4 this year, but the court first extended it to May 4 before granting an additional extension until this Friday. Bankruptcy law dictates that a rehabilitation scheme must receive appr

"We sincerely apologize for the concern caused to our customers and relevant institutions," Lotte Card CEO Cho Jwa-jin said during a press conference Thursday. Electronics giants scramble to cut costs through job cuts

Korean electronics giants LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are scrambling to cut costs by launching programs aimed at downsizing their workforce, as their home appliance businesses are forecast to post disappointing numbers in the near future. According to industry officials on Thursday, LG Electronics will launch a voluntary redundancy program across all its business divisions, including Home Appliance Solution, Media Entertainment Solution, Vehicle Solution and Eco Solution. The program will target employees aged 50 and older or those with underperforming records. In return, the company will offer them standard severance pay and a package including up to three years of salary and two years of tuition support for their children. LG Electronics first implemented the policy last month in its Media Entertainment Solution division, which is in charge of its TV business, as the unit was the only one to post an operating loss in the second quarter, totaling 191.7 billion won ($138.5 million). It is the first time since 2023 that LG Electronics has offered a voluntary retirement program

Shopping sector scrambles to welcome Chinese shoppers following visa-free policy

Korea’s shopping sector is preparing to welcome Chinese tourists as the government’s visa-free policy for Chinese nationals goes into effect on Sept. 29, raising anticipation for a stronger influx of visitors to Seoul. Businesses are introducing new payment methods and product lineups to better cater to Chinese tourists. The companies, understanding that the domestic market alone is not enough to sustain their businesses, are betting big on the foreigners who have long been major customers here. Under the visa policy, Chinese nationals in tour groups of three or more people can visit Korea without a visa and stay up to 15 days. The policy is set to be in place until June 30 next year. With China’s National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival falling within the statutory holiday period of Oct. 1 to 8, the policy is expected to widely open the doors for Chinese visitors to the Korean market. One of the most popular shopping sectors for international travelers is duty free stores. Four major Korean firms in the sector, three of which saw operating deficits in the second quarter, are desperat

Interview Rio Tinto chairman stresses strategic flexibility for Korea to navigate geopolitical tension

Amid the upheaval in the global economy, Korea faces an evolving set of challenges from shifting economic orders, disruptive artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and intensifying geopolitical competition. In the middle of this rough sailing, Dominic Barton, the Canadian chairman of leading multinational mining company Rio Tinto, shared his insights on how Korea can navigate these headwinds and embrace opportunities for sustainable growth, emphasizing its unique position at the crossroads of geopolitical and technological disruption. Barton, a Ugandan-born business executive who previously served as McKinsey & Company’s global managing partner and Canada’s ambassador to China, defined the current era as being marked by heightened geopolitical risk, with the global economic center of gravity having moved decisively towards Asia over the past decades. “We're in a very different place now where there's more geopolitical tension, but there's also a rise in a nationalistic industrial policy because of populism … So that's a shift companies have to adjust to,” he said during an in

KHNP president offers to resign amid controversy over settlement deal with Westinghouse

Whang Joo-ho, president of the state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), has offered to step down, industry sources said Wednesday, amid controversy over KHNP's dispute settlement deal with U.S. energy firm Westinghouse signed earlier this year. Whang's resignation offer comes as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is investigating whether the deal between the KHNP and Westinghouse was signed under due procedure amid criticism the Korean company may have entered into an unfair agreement with the U.S. firm. Last month, media reports suggested the KHNP has been prohibited from bidding for new nuclear power plant projects in North America and the European Union, excluding the Czech Republic, under the Westinghouse deal. The 50-year deal is also said to include provisions requiring the KHNP to sign a goods and services purchase contract worth about $650 million with Westinghouse per export of a single nuclear reactor, and to pay $175 million per reactor in technology licensing fees. The KHNP and Westinghouse signed the settlement in January this year after the latter accused t
