Will Homeplus liquidation decision be postponed again?

Homeplus has submitted an amended rehabilitation plan just three days before a court deadline, but its failure to secure a crucial 200 billion won ($129 million) capital injection is increasing uncertainty over whether the troubled retailer will face liquidation, industry sources said Wednesday. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court will now assess the feasibility of the revised proposal to determine whether to continue with rescue proceedings or dissolve the company. Although the current deadline expires this Friday, expectations are rising that the court will defer the date once more to review the new submission. The country’s second-largest retail chain, controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners, filed for corporate rehabilitation on March 4 last year after struggling with financial difficulties and facing credit rating downgrades. The original deadline for court approval of its rehabilitation plan was March 4 this year, but the court first extended it to May 4 before granting an additional extension until this Friday. BAT Rothmans launches trial campaign for glo Hyper series

BAT Rothmans is expanding consumer access to its glo Hyper heated tobacco devices with a new trial marketing campaign that lowers the entry barrier for first-time buyers. The company said Tuesday the initiative reflects a growing trend in the retail industry to focus on product trials rather than simple price cuts, aiming to boost initial satisfaction, strengthen brand engagement and build long-term loyalty. Under the campaign, first-time purchasers can buy the flagship glo Hyper pro for 29,000 won ($20) online and offline, while the glo Hyper is available for 20,000 won exclusively at offline channels. The company said the pricing strategy combines performance with accessibility, reinforcing the premium positioning of the glo brand. To broaden consumer touchpoints, BAT Rothmans has partnered with major convenience store chains including CU, GS25 and 7-Eleven. Discount coupons, available through the official glo website “discoverglo,” can be redeemed at participating stores for the glo Hyper pro in obsidian black and the glo Hyper in cobalt blue. HD Hyundai foundation supports families of shipyard accident victims

For the first time since its launch in September last year, the HD Hyundai HeeMang Foundation has begun covering living expenses for families of shipyard accident victims. HD Hyundai said Tuesday that nine families of deceased shipyard workers began receiving financial support from the foundation at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries guesthouse in Ulsan. The amount each family received was based on the number of family members. The foundation plans to cover these families' living expenses every month through the end of September next year, conducting annual reviews to determine whether to continue the support. According to HD Hyundai, this is the nation’s first foundation to provide financial support for families of shipyard workers who died on the job. The foundation was established with funds donated by HD Hyundai Chairman Kwon Oh-gap, who contributed his own money to fulfill the company’s responsibility as the world’s leading shipbuilder. The name “HeeMang,” meaning “hope” in Korean, reflects the organization’s mission. “I deeply sympathize with the pain experienced by f

Trump’s APEC attendance boosts competition for shipyard visit

Competition is now in full swing to bring U.S. President Donald Trump to a Korean shipyard during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting slated for Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. With Trump confirming his participation in the international summit, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Hanwha Ocean, as well as the cities housing their shipyards, have ramped up efforts to secure a visit from the U.S. president, who has shown strong interest in revitalizing his country’s shipbuilding industry with Korean investment and technology. HD HHI has already urged diplomatic efforts to bring Trump to its shipyard in Ulsan, a port city bordering Gyeongju. “Our company is located about an hour’s drive from Gyeongju,” Joo Won-ho, head of HD HHI’s Naval & Special Ships Business Unit, said Friday during a meeting of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) with defense industry leaders. “If President Trump and other leaders visit HD HHI and see our vast and diverse infrastructure, they will understand how the Korean shipbuilding

Korea pushes mineral cooperation with Mongolia

Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Monday called for deeper cooperation with Mongolia in the minerals sector during the Mongolia-Korea Critical Minerals & Mining Investment Forum 2025 in Seoul. The forum brought together government officials, business leaders and industry stakeholders from the two countries to discuss bilateral cooperation in critical minerals and promote sustainable investment, aiming to reshape the global supply chain. “Recently, amid global instability in critical mineral supply chains from the U.S.-China strategic rivalry and China’s export controls, as well as major transformations in the energy market, Korea and many other countries are accelerating efforts to strengthen the security of critical minerals,” Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Lee Ho-hyeon, who oversees energy policy, said at the forum. He noted that the two countries share mutually beneficial opportunities as Mongolia holds abundant reserves of minerals such as molybdenum, nickel and tin, while Korea has skilled professionals and advanced technologies in industries such

Calls grow for cybersecurity control tower

Calls are growing for the government to set up a cybersecurity control tower in the wake of a string of major cyberattacks and data breaches that have compromised Korea’s major mobile carriers and financial firms. Critics say the current response system is fragmented across multiple agencies, slowing reactions to cybersecurity incidents. Experts urge the creation of a single coordinating body to strengthen governance. Cyberattacks against Korean companies have surged in recent months. Last week, Lotte Card said the information of 2.97 million customers — one-third of its total base — was compromised by cyber criminals. At the same time, mobile carrier KT is suffering a series of unauthorized mobile payment incidents, while rival SK Telecom suffered a breach affecting 25 million users in April. Financial firms Seoul Guarantee Insurance (SGI) and Welcome Financial Group were also hit by ransomware attacks. According to data from the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), the total number of data breach cases reported by companies from January to August this year stood at 1,501. Th

MBK Partners denies negligence linked to Lotte Card data breach

MBK Partners has denied allegations that it had neglected security investments in relation to a recent data breach at Lotte Card, asserting that it has been increasing its security-related spending steadily. On Monday, the private equity firm said it had injected around 600 billion won ($430 million) over the past six years into information technology (IT) at the card issuer to enhance security. A cyberattack recently hit Lotte Card's server, resulting in the leak of information for about 2.97 million people, or roughly one-third of its members. Questions have been raised over insufficient security investment, with allegations that the company’s data security budget has declined since MBK's acquisition in 2019. In response, MBK emphasized that Lotte Card’s total IT investment amounted to 592.1 billion won from 2020 to 2025, with 65.46 billion won dedicated to security, representing an average of 11 percent of overall IT spending. The firm noted that IT expenditures from 2020 to 2024 equaled about 40 percent of the card issuer’s net income during the period and about 1.5 times the co

Financial groups move to strengthen consumer protection in line with government policy

Financial holding companies are moving quickly to revamp their systems to bolster consumer protections, in line with the Lee Jae Myung administration’s push for a more consumer-centric financial sector, industry officials said Monday. By placing consumer protection at the core of their group strategies, the companies aim to reduce regulatory risks while strengthening trust with authorities, they said. KB Financial Group recently introduced a new consumer protection framework built around three core principles — consumer rights, accountability and trust. The framework combines the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) consumer standards with KB Financial’s customer-focused philosophy and field experience. Under the framework, the group will prioritize consumer protection across the entire lifecycle of financial products and services, from development and planning to sales and aftercare. It also plans to expand access to dedicated services for financially vulnerable customers and reinforce its fraud prevention capabilities by developing an artificial intelligence-powered damage
