Will Homeplus liquidation decision be postponed again?

Homeplus has submitted an amended rehabilitation plan just three days before a court deadline, but its failure to secure a crucial 200 billion won ($129 million) capital injection is increasing uncertainty over whether the troubled retailer will face liquidation, industry sources said Wednesday. The Seoul Bankruptcy Court will now assess the feasibility of the revised proposal to determine whether to continue with rescue proceedings or dissolve the company. Although the current deadline expires this Friday, expectations are rising that the court will defer the date once more to review the new submission. The country’s second-largest retail chain, controlled by private equity firm MBK Partners, filed for corporate rehabilitation on March 4 last year after struggling with financial difficulties and facing credit rating downgrades. The original deadline for court approval of its rehabilitation plan was March 4 this year, but the court first extended it to May 4 before granting an additional extension until this Friday. Hanmi Pharmaceutical gets attention with world’s 1st 'muscle-building' obesity drug

Hanmi Pharmaceutical is drawing market attention after reporting it has identified the scientific mechanism behind what it describes as “the world’s first muscle-building” obesity treatment. Korean drugmaker said Tuesday it has announced the nonclinical research results of three novel obesity drug candidates during European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting 2025 held from Sept. 15 to 19 in Austria. Highlighting the announcement was the study result of HM17321, which Hanmi described as the world’s first-in-class obesity drug that enables “increasing muscle mass while selectively reducing fat at the same time.” During the announcement, Hanmi presented research data suggesting that HM17321 induces muscle growth by activating the mechanistic target of the rapamycin pathway and promoting metabolic adaptation to be dependent on glycolysis. The research team also found that it helps activate an immune cell in muscle called a regulatory T cell, triggering satellite cells to create new muscle. The company also said that it conducted long-term administration t

Celltrion acquires Eli Lilly bio plant in New Jersey

Celltrion said Tuesday it has signed a deal to acquire Eli Lilly’s biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Branchburg, New Jersey, in a preemptive move to shield itself from proposed U.S. pharma tariffs. In a regulatory filing, the biotech firm said its U.S. unit, Celltrion USA, has acquired the full stake of ImClone Systems, an Eli Lilly subsidiary running the plant, for $330 million. Celltrion Chairman Seo Jung-jin said during an online press conference that the company will invest a total of 1.4 trillion won ($1 billion) to run and acquire the plant and expand its facilities in the near future. The up-front amount is 700 billion won, including the acquisition price and early operation costs, with the remaining 700 billion won to be used for expansion. “As the Donald Trump administration demands tariffs for global Big Pharma, I thought ‘Made in USA’ could be the answer,” Seo said. “Since the acquisition covers the costly purification lines and the transfer of technical staff, the company was able to save a significant amount of expenses.” The acquisition came just months

Industry ministry discusses response to possible expansion of US tariffs on steel, aluminum derivatives with companies

The industry ministry said Tuesday it held a meeting with private companies to discuss Korea's response to a potential expansion of U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum derivatives, as well as auto parts. The U.S. Commerce Department is currently accepting inclusion requests from American companies to include steel and aluminum derivatives in the 50 percent tariff scheme on such products, with the process set to close next week. The move follows President Donald Trump's administration's imposition of 50 percent duties on 407 additional steel and aluminum derivative products in August. To proactively respond to such measures, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy met with trade agencies and companies in the sectors to assess the potential impact of Washington's move and discuss support measures for Korean industries, according to ministry officials. In the meeting, the ministry pledged to help Korean companies submit written opinions opposing the expansion of U.S. tariffs to the Trump administration and provide consultations on exports of the affected products. Starting in October, the

Competition heats up to lead AI farming machine industry

Daedong, TYM and LS Mtron have each strengthened partnerships with other organizations to develop farming machines powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and take the lead in the future agricultural market. With Korea’s rural population aging, the country’s top three agricultural equipment manufacturers are ramping up efforts to attract older farmers and help them address labor shortages with smart technology. Earlier this month, two Daedong Group affiliates — Daedong Robotics and Daedong AI Lab — formed a consortium with domestic AI and robotics companies to foster growth in the AI-powered farming and field robot sector. This initiative aligns with Daedong’s push to develop robots that recognize human voices and offer autonomous driving features. The farming machine maker plans to use the consortium to upgrade core AI technologies such as robot arms and hands for agriculture. Daedong also expects the partnership to address issues facing rural communities, including an aging population, labor shortages and climate change. “The consortium marks a turning point for the domesti
