Injured defender recovering quickly, available in group stage

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — On the heels of their opening victory at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, South Korea received some encouraging news on the injury front Friday. Defender Kim Tae-hyeon, dealing with an ankle injury that some feared could keep him out of the group stage, will be available as early as next Thursday for South Korea's second Group A match against Mexico. Kim picked up the injury during a training session Tuesday at Chivas Verde Valle in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and a national team official told reporters the next day that the left-footed center back may miss the entire group stage -- which ends on June 24 for South Korea. However, Song Jun-seob, the senior team doctor, said Friday that Kim's injury wasn't serious as once feared. "The initial MRI confirmed a ligament tear but the picture wasn't clear enough for us to determine the exact degree," Song said. "We checked his swelling 24 hours later and determined that it was an average sprain. So we told the coaching staff that he should be able to play at the World Cup." S. Korean bobsleigh tandem still wants to improve

The South Korean bobsleigh tandem said Wednesday despite being No. 1 in the world, they still have things to improve upon if they want to win a medal at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. At the 21st Coca-Cola Sports Awards, Won Yun-jong and Seo Young-woo were named MVPs for their superb performance last season when they ended as the world's top-ranked two-man bobsleigh team. But the achievement still didn't satisfy the duo. "We know we are No. 1 in world ranking, but we still need to improve our skills in starting and driving," Won said after the awards ceremony. "If we can improve our shortcomings in the next two years, we will able to stand on the podium at the PyeongChang Games." Pilot Won and brakeman Seo ended the 2015-2016 International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) season with two gold and three silver medals at eight IBSF World Cup races. Though they finished seventh at the world championships, they were still able to end the season as the top-ranked tandem thanks to their second World Cup victory of the season last month in Germany. The two athletes wer

Jeonbuk won 1-0. / YonhapBy John Duerden The opening game of the 2016 K-League season had plenty of good and bad aspects. The Saturday game was a traditional curtain raiser that pits the champion against the FA Cup holder.  Jeonbuk Motors hosted FC Seoul and won 1-0.The on-field action was nothing to write home about, but off the field more than 32,000 fans set a Jeolla club record for a league game at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium. It was just a shame that they did not have anything to get excited about except the second-half winning goal from new signing Kim Shin-wook.FC Seoul had played just twice this season in the Asian Champions League and had scored 10 goals against decent opposition. Brazilian hitman Adriano had scored a magnificent seven of those and his partnership with returning hero Dejan Damjanovic had Seoul fans and Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee worried. They were so worried, in f
