No need for Team Korea to fear Mexico

Korea heads into the lion’s den to take on Mexico in Guadalajara late Friday morning Seoul time. Ever since the draw was made for the 2026 World Cup in December, everyone knew that this would be the toughest game. However, it is not as daunting as it could have been, as the Taegeuk Warriors have three points in the bank after a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic last week. With its final game against South Africa to come next week, Korea is in a good position. Had the opener ended in a loss — and that was a possibility before Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeong-gyu scored to negate a Czech lead — then the team would have desperately needed a result against Mexico and been under real pressure. Now, a draw would be fine, and even a defeat, as long as the performance was OK, would not be the end of the world — or the World Cup. A win, however, would be spectacular and a real statement against a Mexican team ranked 13th in the world, eight above Hong Myung-bo’s men. It would help Korea become the first team to secure a place in the Round of 32 in the new expanded format. There’s more. In i

Yoo Byung-soo: the one that got away

By John DuerdenIt is no secret that South Korea has been looking for a goal scorer for years and it is not alone in that. There have been plenty of players to try but none have made the position their own. From time to time, a young player scores a few and the press gets excited. He makes a couple of appearances for the Taeguk Warriors and it doesn’t work. He drops back into the pack and gets more chances. There was Lee Dong-gook in the middle of the last decade who had become the go-to goal getter but a serious injury just before the 2006 World Cup ended that. Park Chu-young started to look good for his country from around 2009 but his move to Arsenal in 2011 and the lack of game time he received was the beginning of the end for him. These days there is Suk Hyun-jun of FC Porto who is showing promise as well as Hwang Eui-jo and Lee Jeong-hyeop. All are competing. But there was once Yoo Byung-soo. Now 28, the striker has just been released by Russian team FC Rostov and could well be heading back to the Land of the Morning Calm.Yet in 2009, he was a young man emerging onto the K-Lea

Top sports tribunal rules Park Tae-hwan eligible for Rio Olympics

Park Tae-hwanThe world's top sports tribunal has ruled that banned South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan is eligible for this year's Summer Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday reached a decision in favor of Park following his appeal against the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) over the latter's ban on the athlete for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games. The ruling gives Park, the 2008 Olympic champion in the 400m free, barely enough time to make the national team. He was left off the preliminary roster announced on May 11, even after meeting Olympic qualifying times in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle at the national team trials in April. The deadline to submit the final roster to FINA, the international swimming governing body, is Friday local time in Lausanne, Switzerland.Park tested positive for testosterone in October 2014, and his 18-month ban, which began retroactively in September 2014, ended in March this year.Last week, a Seoul court also ruled Park eligible to make the national team for Rio, saying the KOC had no grounds to ban him from the Olympics.T

It is one of the five continental associations recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).The headquarters of the OCA have been in Kuwait City since the organization was formed in 1982.
