No need for Team Korea to fear Mexico

Korea heads into the lion’s den to take on Mexico in Guadalajara late Friday morning Seoul time. Ever since the draw was made for the 2026 World Cup in December, everyone knew that this would be the toughest game. However, it is not as daunting as it could have been, as the Taegeuk Warriors have three points in the bank after a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic last week. With its final game against South Africa to come next week, Korea is in a good position. Had the opener ended in a loss — and that was a possibility before Hwang In-beom and Oh Hyeong-gyu scored to negate a Czech lead — then the team would have desperately needed a result against Mexico and been under real pressure. Now, a draw would be fine, and even a defeat, as long as the performance was OK, would not be the end of the world — or the World Cup. A win, however, would be spectacular and a real statement against a Mexican team ranked 13th in the world, eight above Hong Myung-bo’s men. It would help Korea become the first team to secure a place in the Round of 32 in the new expanded format. There’s more. In i

Kang Jung-ho of the Pittsburgh Pirates doubled for the second straight start while under a sexual assault investigation.Kang went 1-for-4 against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Thursday (local time). He started in the cleanup spot and played third for the second straight game after a news report on Tuesday claimed he was being investigated over a sexual assault allegation in Chicago. The South Korean is batting .255 for the season. He hasn't homered since June 24 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a stretch of 10 games. It's the longest such drought in 2016 for Kang, who made his season debut in May after recovering from leg injuries sustained last September. In the same game, the Cardinals' South Korean relief pitcher, Oh Seung-hwan, pitched a perfect ninth inning to preserve a 5-1 victory for St. Louis. The former closer in South Korea and Japan, with 355 saves in 11 seasons in Asia, has received the majority of ninth inning duties since All-Star Trevor Rosenthal was removed from the role late last month. Sports tribunal to rule on Park Tae-hwan's fate Friday

The world's top sports tribunal will rule on the fate of the banned South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan on Friday, a day later than expected, the athlete's representatives said. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), based in Lausanne, Switzerland, has emailed Park's international lawyer that its ruling will be made sometime Friday local time, according to the representatives. No specific reasons were known for the delay.Park, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the 400m freestyle, has filed an appeal at the CAS over a Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) ban for this year's Rio de Janeiro Summer Games.A KOC rule bars athletes from competing for the country for three years after the end of a doping suspension. And Park, whose 18-month international doping ban ended in March this year, was kept off the provisional national team roster on May 11.According to Park's camp, the CAS opened hearing on the case at 7 p.m. Thursday in South Korean time, and the swimmer's reps had expected a decision by late Thursday night. The CAS, when announcing Park's appeal on June 29, said Park had requested "an

Football star Lionel Messi gets jail for tax fraud

/Courtesy of TwitterBy Lee Han-sooWorld-famous footballer Lionel Messi was sentenced to 21 months’ jail Wednesday on tax fraud charges.Messi and his father, Jorge Messi, were convicted of defrauding the Spanish tax office of $4.5 million by evading tax on money earned from selling Messi’s image rights from 2007 to 2009. The father received the same sentence. The Argentine player was charged with concealing the earnings through tax havens in Belize and Uruguay. Both men denied the charges."I was playing football, I knew nothing," Messi said on June 2. "I only worried about playing football."But Messi and his father are unlikely to serve their prison sentences because Spanish law dictates that prison terms of less than two years can be served as probation. In August 2013, Messi was found guilty of three counts of tax fraud. The family made a voluntary $5.5 million “corrective payment” -- equivalent to the alleged unpaid tax and interest. The latest sentence can be appealed at the Spanish High Court.

'Kang Jung-ho should keep playing until charged'

/Courtesy of TwitterBy Lee Han-sooSouth Korean Major League Baseball player Kang Jung-ho, who is being investigated over an alleged sexual assault in Chicago, should be able to “keep playing until charged,” an editor of U.S. newspaper the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said in an opinion piece.“As long as he hasn’t been charged with a crime, he shouldn’t be suspended,” Paul Zeise said. “There is a huge difference between being investigated for a crime and being charged with a crime. If, after a thorough investigation, it is determined that there is enough evidence to charge Kang with a crime, then, and only then, the game changes.”Kang’s position as an infielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates has been unaffected by the investigation the Chicago Tribune revealed on Wednesday. Kang, 29, made a base hit on Wednesday and was included in the starting roster on Thursday.A spokesman for the Pittsburgh Pirates said the club takes the case “extremely seriously,” adding that the matter is “exclusively before the Commissioner's Office

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

Remain calm when your hands disappearIt's a frustration every golfer feels: Why does your game come and go on a seemingly random basis? One cause is the failure of your brain to track your hands after they leave your field of vision. While you may not be consciously aware of it, your brain can easily keep track of your hands when they're in front of you at address and follow them using your peripheral vision during the takeaway. But as your hands approach the 9 o'clock position (the ball is at 6 o'clock), they exit your visual field, forcing your brain to rely solely on its network of feel sensors scattered throughout your body.Keeping track of your hands is important because they are the only contact you have with the club, and since they are the "feel center" of your swing, they function as the main means of tracking the clubhead. Basically, your hands ARE the clubhead.Think of it this way: You start at address with your two most effective tracking systems on full go (visual and feel), and at 9 o'clock, you've cut your tracking information by half as your hands leave your field

Hitting solid shots improves ball-striking ability

By Kim Jeong-kyooTo improve your ball-striking ability, you need to learn to hit your ball solidly. Also, you need to speed up your club through your ball. Striving to increase your club head speed to the full, however, can rob you of your chance of making solid shots. To hit your ball consistently well, focus on your body movements so you can swing your club properly. Several keys here will help you hit your ball far and accurately. 1. Use your whole body To hit your ball far, you need to let your whole body move freely. Limiting your body motion, you cannot make your club head travel fastest through your ball.To prove this, throw a ball using only your hands and arms, keeping your hips and shoulders still. Then, throw the ball again, using your entire body. You will throw the ball longer when you use your shoulders and hips. The same applies to your golf swing. To speed up your club to the full through your shot, you need to use your entire body. Using your whole body, you will swing your club on plane and on the correct path. 2. Shift your weight first before you be
